Enhanced photocatalytic performance by regulating the Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+)ratio in cerium dioxide

Cerium dioxide(CeO_(2))photocatalysts are used in treating environmental pollution and addressing the energy crisis due to their excellent oxygen storage capacities and abundant oxygen vacancies.In this paper,CeO_(2)precursors were synthesized with different water-alcohol ratios via a solvothermal method,and CeO_(2)photocatalysts with different Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+)ratios were obtained by changing the precursor calcination atmospheres(air,Ar)as well as the calcination time.The effects of CeO_(2)with different Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+)ratios in photocatalytic degradations of methylene blue under visible light were investigated.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the surfaces of the samples calcined under Ar had higher Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+)ratios and oxygen vacancy concentrations,which reduced the band gaps of the catalysts and improved their utilization of visible light.In addition,the many Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+)redox centers and oxygen vacancies on the sample surfaces improved the separation and transfer efficiencies of the photogenerated carriers.The sample C2-Ar calcined under Ar showed a high adsorption capacity and excellent photocatalytic activity by removing 96%of the methylene blue within 120 min,which was more than twice the degradation rate of the sample(C2-air)prepared via calcination under air.Trapping experiments showed that photogenerated holes played a key role in the photocatalytic process.In addition,a synergistic photocatalytic mechanism for the Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+)redox centers and oxygen vacancies was elucidated in detail,and the sensitization of cerium dioxide by dyes aided the degradation of methylene blue.

By anchoring Tb^(3+)ions on its free carboxyl groups of the nanocaged NiMOF,a dual-emission self-calibrating sensor of Tb^(3+)@NiMOF was fabricated through coordination post-synthetic modification(PSM)strategy.With Tb^(3+)ions as the secondary fluorescent signal and sensing active sites,Tb^(3+)@NiMOF presents great potentials in visually and efficiently monitoring EPI in serum,with high sensitivity and selectivity,fast response,excellent recyclable,and the low detection limit(LOD,3.06 ng/mL).Furthermore,a tandem combinational logic gate based intelligent detection system was constructed to improve the practicability and convenience of epinephrine(EPI)detection in serum by comparing the light emitted colour with the series standard colour cards preset in the smartphone.This work provides a promising approach of developing metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)based self-calibrating sensors for intelligent detection of bioactive molecules.

To the Editor:In 1996,Parodi et al^([1])introduced the technique of fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair(f-EVAR)for treatment of pararenal abdominal aortic aneurysms.They use physician modified stent grafts(PMSGs)for fenestration,which allows for stent grafts to gain sufficient proximal sealing zones and maintain the blood perfusion of visceral arteries.^([2])Stent grafts used in the f-EVAR technique developed from PMSGs to Company Modified Devices(CMDs)and off-the-shelf devices.^([3])To improve the precision of PMSGs and shorten the time of stent graft modification,various techniques that assist in the process of fenestration have been researched and developed,including 3-dimensional(3D)printing technique,the Mixed Reality(MR)technique,and the 3D parametric surface planar topological guide plate.This article describes the current status and future development of these techniques.

Improved Heuristic Job Scheduling Method to Enhance Throughput for Big Data Analytics

Data-parallel computing platforms,such as Hadoop and Spark,are deployed in computing clusters for big data analytics.There is a general tendency that multiple users share the same computing cluster.The schedule of multiple jobs becomes a serious challenge.Over a long period in the past,the Shortest-Job-First(SJF)method has been considered as the optimal solution to minimize the average job completion time.However,the SJF method leads to a low system throughput in the case where a small number of short jobs consume a large amount of resources.This factor prolongs the average job completion time.We propose an improved heuristic job scheduling method,called the Densest-Job-Set-First(DJSF)method.The DJSF method schedules jobs by maximizing the number of completed jobs per unit time,aiming to decrease the average Job Completion Time(JCT)and improve the system throughput.We perform extensive simulations based on Google cluster data.Compared with the SJF method,the DJSF method decreases the average JCT by 23.19% and enhances the system throughput by 42.19%.Compared with Tetris,the job packing method improves the job completion efficiency by 55.4%,so that the computing platforms complete more jobs in a short time span.

Diamond,with ultrahigh hardness,high wear resistance,high thermal conductivity,and so forth,has attracted worldwide attention.However,researchers found emergent reactions at the interfaces between diamond and ferrous materials,which significantly affects the performance of diamond-based devices.Herein,combing experiments and theoretical calculations,taking diamond–iron(Fe)interface as a prototype,the counter-diffusion mechanism of Fe/carbon atoms has been established.Surprisingly,it is identified that Fe and diamond first form a coherent interface,and then Fe atoms diffuse into diamond and prefer the carbon vacancies sites.Meanwhile,the relaxed carbon atoms diffuse into the Fe lattice,forming Fe_(3)C.Moreover,graphite is observed at the Fe_(3)C surface when Fe_(3)C is over-saturated by carbon atoms.The present findings are expected to offer new insights into the atomic mechanism for diamondferrous material's interfacial reactions,benefiting diamond-based device applications.

Mapping soil organic matter in cultivated land based on multi-year composite images on monthly time scales

Rapid and accurate acquisition of soil organic matter(SOM)information in cultivated land is important for sustainable agricultural development and carbon balance management.This study proposed a novel approach to predict SOM with high accuracy using multiyear synthetic remote sensing variables on a monthly scale.We obtained 12 monthly synthetic Sentinel-2 images covering the study area from 2016 to 2021 through the Google Earth Engine(GEE)platform,and reflectance bands and vegetation indices were extracted from these composite images.Then the random forest(RF),support vector machine(SVM)and gradient boosting regression tree(GBRT)models were tested to investigate the difference in SOM prediction accuracy under different combinations of monthly synthetic variables.Results showed that firstly,all monthly synthetic spectral bands of Sentinel-2 showed a significant correlation with SOM(P<0.05)for the months of January,March,April,October,and November.Secondly,in terms of single-monthly composite variables,the prediction accuracy was relatively poor,with the highest R^(2)value of 0.36 being observed in January.When monthly synthetic environmental variables were grouped in accordance with the four quarters of the year,the first quarter and the fourth quarter showed good performance,and any combination of three quarters was similar in estimation accuracy.The overall best performance was observed when all monthly synthetic variables were incorporated into the models.Thirdly,among the three models compared,the RF model was consistently more accurate than the SVM and GBRT models,achieving an R^(2)value of 0.56.Except for band 12 in December,the importance of the remaining bands did not exhibit significant differences.This research offers a new attempt to map SOM with high accuracy and fine spatial resolution based on monthly synthetic Sentinel-2 images.

Incorporation of source contributions to improve the accuracy of soil heavy metal mapping using small sample sizes at a county scale

Estimating heavy metal(HM) distribution with high precision is the key to effectively preventing Chinese medicinal plants from being polluted by the native soil. A total of 44 surface soil samples were gathered to detect the concentrations of eight HMs(As, Hg, Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, and Cd) in the herb growing area of Luanping County, northeastern Hebei Province, China. An absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression(APCS-MLR) model was used to quantify pollution source contributions to soil HMs. Furthermore, the source contribution rates and environmental data of each sampling point were simultaneously incorporated into a stepwise linear regression model to identify the crucial indicators for predicting soil HM spatial distributions. Results showed that 88% of Cu, 72% of Cr, and 72% of Ni came from natural sources;50% of Zn, 49% of Pb, and 59% of Cd were mainly caused by agricultural activities;and 44% of As and 56% of Hg originated from industrial activities. When three-type(natural, agricultural, and industrial) source contribution rates and environmental data were simultaneously incorporated into the stepwise linear regression model, the fitting accuracy was significantly improved and the model could explain 31%–86% of the total variance in soil HM concentrations. This study introduced three-type source contributions of each sampling point based on APCS-MLR analysis as new covariates to improve soil HM estimation precision, thus providing a new approach for predicting the spatial distribution of HMs using small sample sizes at the county scale.

Review on residual stress and its effects on manufacturing of aluminium alloy structural panels with typical multi-processes

In the aerospace industry,integrated aluminium alloy plates and stiffened panels with high accuracy and performance attract significant interest.To manufacture these panels as integrity with high accuracy,multiple processes need to be utilised,such as machining,welding and forming.During the whole manufacturing chain,residual stresses can be generated and redistributed in the components among different processes.The residual stress would significantly affect the shapes and properties of the final products.Currently,these great effects are not well considered in the design and manufacturing processes.This paper aims to draw a general understanding of the residual stress generated in the pre-manufacturing processes and its effects on subsequent manufacturing processes.The mechanisms and distributions of residual stresses generated in typical premanufacturing processes of structural panels,including machining,welding and additive manufacturing(AM),are firstly summarised.The detailed effects of generated residual stresses on distortion and application properties in subsequent manufacturing processes are then concluded.In addition,current methods developed for the investigation of residual stress effect in multi-processes manufacturing are critically reviewed,including experimental,analytical,finite element(FE)and machine learning methods.Furthermore,the future development trend of methods for residual stress consideration and control in the design of manufacturing processes is summarised,providing comprehensive guidance to achieve the high accurate manufacturing of aluminium alloy structural components.

Rhizosphere microbes influence wogonoside accumulation in perennial Scutellaria baicalensis

Dried roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi are an acclaimed traditional Chinese medicine,and wogonoside content is a key indicator used to evaluate S.baicalensis quality.Rather than rising linearly with cultivation years,S.baicalensis quality initially increases and then declines.However,little is known regarding the dynamic variations in S.baicalensis rhizosphere microorganisms under long-term cultivation and underlying mechanisms of their effects on wogonoside formation and accumulation.The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of soil nutrients and rhizosphere microbes on S.baicalensis quality across different cultivation years(1-4 years).The wogonoside content(25.14 mg g^(-1))was highest in the biennial S.baicalensis and then decreased following long-term cultivation.Most soil nutrients(available nitrogen,available phosphorus,available iron,available manganese,and available zinc)were reduced significantly as cultivation years increased.Time also affected rhizosphere bacterial community structure significantly,driving it toward deterministic process(i.e.,β-nearest taxon indexlity under long-term cultivation from the perspective of soil nutrients and microorganisms,which may theoretically support the future artificial cultivation and management of Chinese medicinal plants.

Multi-modal knowledge graph inference via media convergence and logic rule

Media convergence works by processing information from different modalities and applying them to different domains.It is difficult for the conventional knowledge graph to utilise multi-media features because the introduction of a large amount of information from other modalities reduces the effectiveness of representation learning and makes knowledge graph inference less effective.To address the issue,an inference method based on Media Convergence and Rule-guided Joint Inference model(MCRJI)has been pro-posed.The authors not only converge multi-media features of entities but also introduce logic rules to improve the accuracy and interpretability of link prediction.First,a multi-headed self-attention approach is used to obtain the attention of different media features of entities during semantic synthesis.Second,logic rules of different lengths are mined from knowledge graph to learn new entity representations.Finally,knowledge graph inference is performed based on representing entities that converge multi-media features.Numerous experimental results show that MCRJI outperforms other advanced baselines in using multi-media features and knowledge graph inference,demonstrating that MCRJI provides an excellent approach for knowledge graph inference with converged multi-media features.
