To the Editor： Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in Intensive Care Units. It is known as the syndrome of organ dysfunction caused by infection. Immune response has a critical role in sepsis. High concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha （TNF-α） and interleukin （IL）-6 have been suggested to be harmful and one of the major causes of organ injury.[1] Immune paralysis in sepsis causes a secondary infection.

Certain insect species have been observed to exploit the resonance mechanism of their wings.In order to achieve resonance and optimize aerodynamic performance,the conventional approach is to set the flapping frequency of flexible wings based on the Traditional Structural Modal(TSM)analysis.However,there exists controversy among researchers regarding the relationship between frequency and aerodynamic performance.Recognizing that the structural response of wings can be influenced by the surrounding air vibrations,an analysis known as Acoustic Structure Interaction Modal(ASIM)is introduced to calculate the resonant frequency.In this study,Fluid Structure Interaction(FSI)simulations are employed to investigate the aerodynamic performance of flapping wings at modal frequencies derived from both TSM and ASIM analyses.The performance is evaluated for various mass ratios and frequency ratios,and the findings indicate that the deformation and changes in vortex structure exhibit similarities at mass ratios that yield the highest aerodynamic performance.Notably,the flapping frequency associated with the maximum time-averaged vertical force coefficient at each mass ratio closely aligns with the ASIM frequency,as does the frequency corresponding to maximum efficiency.Thus,the ASIM analysis can provide an effective means for predicting the optimal flapping frequency for flexible wings.Furthermore,it enables the prediction that flexible wings with varying mass ratios will exhibit similar deformation and vortex structure changes.This paper offers a fresh perspective on the ongoing debate concerning the resonance mechanism of Flexible Flapping Wings(FFWs)and proposes an effective methodology for predicting their aerodynamic performance.

Jasmonic acid(JA)is a key regulator of plant defense responses.Although the transcription factor MYC2,the master regulator of the JA signaling pathway,orchestrates a hierarchical transcriptional cascade that regulates the JA responses,only a few transcriptional regulators involved in this cascade have been described.Here,we identified the basic helix-loop-helix(bHLH)transcription factor gene in tomato(Solanum lycopersicum),METHYL JASMONATE(MeJA)-INDUCED GENE(SlJIG),the expression of which was strongly induced by MeJA treatment.Genetic and molecular biology experiments revealed that SlJIG is a direct target of MYC2.SlJIG knockout plants generated by gene editing had lower terpene contents than the wild type from the lower expression of TERPENE SYNTHASE(TPS)genes,rendering them more appealing to cotton bollworm(Helicoverpa armigera).Moreover,SlJIG knockouts exhibited weaker JA-mediated induction of TPSs,suggesting that SlJIG may participate in JA-induced terpene biosynthesis.Knocking out SlJIG also resulted in attenuated expression of JA-responsive defense genes,which may contribute to the observed lower resistance to cotton bollworm and to the fungus Botrytis cinerea.We conclude that SlJIG is a direct target of MYC2,forms a MYC2-SlJIG module,and functions in terpene biosynthesis and resistance against cotton bollworm and B.cinerea.

The morphology,size,quantity,and composition of complex oxide+carbonitride in H13 steel held at 1250℃for 5,10,and 15 h were determined.The results show that the ratio and number of complex carbonitrides with cores in H13 steel are gradually increased when holding at 1250℃compared with those in the original H13 steel,and the core size increases.There are one or more oxide cores in(Ti_(x),V_(1-x))(Cy,N_(1-y)),including xCaO·zAl_(2)O_(3),xCaO·yMgO·zAl_(2)O_(3),and CaO after holding at 1250℃,in addition to MgO·Al_(2)O_(3)and Al_(2)O_(3)in the original steel.The equilibrium temperature for(Ti_(x),V_(1-x))(Cy,N_(1-y))precipitation at the solidification front and decomposition in the solid state was theoretically analyzed,which was affected by the x value and the product of Ti and N contents in H13 steel.Meanwhile,the composition of(Ti_(x),V_(1-x))(Cy,N_(1-y))is influenced by the oxide cores.It is convinced that(Ti_(x),V_(1-x))(Cy,N_(1-y))with oxide cores has a higher stability,especially for oxides with a high Al_(2)O_(3)content.Heat treatment at high temperature facilitates a more reasonable analysis of oxide+carbonitride,and the generation mechanism of oxide+carbonitride was discussed.

Viral encephalitis continues to be a significant public health concern.In our previous study,we discovered a lower expression of antiviral factors,such as IFN-β,STING and IFI16,in the brain tissues of patients with Rasmussen's encephalitis(RE),a rare chronic neurological disorder often occurred in children,characterized by unihemispheric brain atrophy.Furthermore,a higher cumulative viral score of human herpes viruses(HHVs)was also found to have a significant positive correlation with the unihemispheric atrophy in RE.Type I IFNs(IFN-I)signaling is essential for innate anti-infection response by binding to IFN-α/βreceptor(IFNAR).In this study,we infected WT mice and IFNAR-deficient A6 mice with herpes simplex virus 1(HSV-1)via periocular injection to investigate the relationship between IFN-I signaling and HHVs-induced brain lesions.While all mice exhibited typical viral encephalitis lesions in their brains,HSV-induced epilepsy was only observed in A6 mice.The gene expression matrix,functional enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction network revealed four gene models that were positively related with HSV-induced epilepsy.Additionally,ten key genes with the highest scores were identified.Taken together,these findings indicate that intact IFN-I signaling can effectively limit HHVs induced neural symptoms and brain lesions,thereby confirming the positive correlation between IFN-I signaling repression and brain atrophy in RE and other HHVs encephalitis.

Polysaccharides from Chinese herbal medicine:a review on the hepatoprotective and molecular mechanism

Polysaccharides,predominantly extracted from traditional Chinese medicinal herbs such as Lycium barbarum,Angelica sinensis,Astragalus membranaceus,Dendrobium officinale,Ganoderma lucidum,and Poria cocos,represent principal bioactive constituents extensively utilized in Chinese medicine.These compounds have demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory capabilities,especially anti-liver injury activities,while exhibiting minimal adverse effects.This review summarized recent studies to elucidate the hepatoprotective efficacy and underlying molecular mechanisms of these herbal polysaccharides.It underscored the role of these polysaccharides in regulating hepatic function,enhancing immunological responses,and improving antioxidant capacities,thus contributing to the attenuation of hepatocyte apoptosis and liver protection.Analyses of molecular pathways in these studies revealed the intricate and indispensable functions of traditional Chinese herbal polysaccharides in liver injury management.Therefore,this review provides a thorough examination of the hepatoprotective attributes and molecular mechanisms of these medicinal polysaccharides,thereby offering valuable insights for the advancement of polysaccharide-based therapeutic research and their potential clinical applications in liver disease treatment.

Oil pollution is a serious environmental and natural resource problem.Traditional adsorption materials for oil–water separation have limitations in terms of their preparation cost,reusability,and mechanical properties.Among the conventional adsorption materials,super-hydrophobic/super-lipophilic materials are easily contaminated by oil.In this study,polypropylene(PP)is used as a foam substrate to prepare an open-cell PP foam via hot pressing,supercritical CO_(2) foaming,and electron beam(EB)irradiation.The impact of EB irradiation dose on the open-cell content of PP foam can lead to cell wall rupture,resulting in an open-cell structure that enhances oil-water separation performance.At an absorbed radiation dose of 200 kGy,the PP foams exhibit optimal oil–water separation performance,cyclic compression stability,heat insulation,and preparation cost.The open-cell content of PP foam is increased to 86.5%,the adsorption capacity for diesel oil is 42.8 g/g,and the adsorption efficiency remains at 99.6%after 100 cycles of oil desorption in a complex pH environment.Meanwhile,cracks and nano-voids simultaneously promote the capillary action of oil,and the oil transport rate is 0.0713 g/(g·s).This study provides a new concept for the preparation of open-cell polymer foams that can meet the demand for high oil-absorption capacity under complex acid-base pH conditions.
