Strong contact coupling of neuronal growth cones with height-controlled vertical silicon nanocolumns

In this study, we report that height-controlled vertically etched silicon nano- column arrays （vSNAs） induce strong growth cone-to-substrate coupling and accelerate in vitro neurite development while preserving the essential features of initial neurite formation. Large-scale preparation of vSNAs with flat head morphology enabled the generation of well-controlled topographical stimulation without cellular impalement. A systematic analysis on topography- induced variations on cellular morphology and cytoskeletal dynamics was conducted. In addition, neurite development on the grid-patterned vSNAs exhibited preferential adhesion to the nanostructured region and outgrowth directionality. The arrangement of cytoskeletal proteins and the expression of a focal adhesion complex indicated that a strong coupling existed between the underlying nanocolumns and growth cones. Furthermore, the height-controlled nanocolumn substrates differentially modulated neurite polarization and elongation. Our findings provide an important insight into neuron-nanotopography interactions and their role in cell adhesion and neurite development.

Bioprinted Vascularized Mature Adipose Tissue with Collagen Microfibers for Soft Tissue Regeneration

The development of soft tissue regeneration has recently gained importance due to safety concerns about artificial breast implants.Current autologous fat graft implantations can result in up to 90%of volume loss in long-term outcomes due to their limited revascularization.Adipose tissue has a highly vascularized structure which enables its proper homeostasis as well as its endocrine function.Mature adipocytes surrounded by a dense vascular network are the specific features required for efficient regeneration of the adipose tissue to perform host anastomosis after its implantation.Recently,bioprinting has been introduced as a promising solution to recreate in vitro this architecture in large-scale tissues.However,the in vitro induction of both the angiogenesis and adipogenesis differentiations from stem cells yields limited maturation states for these two pathways.To overcome these issues,we report a novel method for obtaining a fully vascularized adipose tissue reconstruction using supporting bath bioprinting.For the first time,directly isolated mature adipocytes encapsulated in a bioink containing physiological collagen microfibers(CMF)were bioprinted in a gellan gum supporting bath.These multilayered bioprinted tissues retained high viability even after 7 days of culture.Moreover,the functionality was also confirmed by the maintenance of fatty acid uptake from mature adipocytes.Therefore,this method of constructing fully functional adipose tissue regeneration holds promise for future clinical applications.

Insights into the changes in the surface properties of goethite with Ni in the lattice in the presence of salicylhydroxamic acid:Experimental and density functional theory studies

Comparative experiments and theoretical analysis of the surface chemistry changes of goethite(GT)and goethite containing Ni(GTN)in the lattice in the presence of salicylhydroxamic acid(SA)were performed.It was revealed that in the presence of 100 g·t^(-1)of SA,the flotation recovery of GTN and GT increased with increasing pH,achieving a maximum recovery of 98.9%for both minerals at p H 8.3 and decreasing beyond that pH,with GTN having a slightly higher recovery than GT,except at pH 8.3.This was further confirmed by the higher complexation energies of GTN···SA(-883.87 kJ·mol^(-1))compared with GT···SA(-604.23 kJ·mol^(-1))resulting from covalent,closed-shell,and conventional hydrogen bonding.The higher adsorption of SA onto GTN relative to GT was due to the formation of aπ-hole in GTN,thereby promoting a higher interaction of the collector with the mineral.Thus,the presence of Ni in the GT lattice improves and decreases the adsorption and desorption of SA onto and from the mineral,respectively,compared with those onto and from GT.

MicroR-9c-5p and novel-mir50 co-target Akt to regulate Lasioderma serricorne reproduction

High fecundity is a common characteristic of insect pests which increases the difficulty of population control.Serine/threonine kinase Akt is an indispensable component of the insulin signaling pathway.Silencing of LsAkt severely hinders reproduction in Lasioderma serricorne,a stored product insect pest.However,the post-transcriptional pathway of LsAkt in L.serricorne remains unknown.This study identified 2 binding sites of miR-9c-5p and novel-mir50 in the coding sequences of LsAkt.The expression profiles of 2 microRNAs(miRNAs)and LsAkt displayed an opposite pattern during the adult stages.Luciferase reporter assay showed that novel-mir50 and miR-9c-5p could downregulate the expression of LsAkt.Overexpression of miR-9c-5p and novel-mir50 by injection of mimics inhibited the expression of LsAkt and reduced oviposition,decreased egg hatchability,and blocked ovarian development.It also decreased the expression of genes involved in ovarian development(LsVg and LsVgR)and the nutritional signaling pathway(LsTOR,LsS6K,and Ls4EBP),and reduced the phosphorylation of Akt.Conversely,injection of miR-9c-5p and novel-mir50 inhibitors induced the expressions of LsAkt,LsVg,LsVgR,LsTOR,LsS6K,and Ls4EBP,enhanced Akt phosphorylation level,and accelerated ovarian development.Injection of bovine insulin downregulated the expression of miR-9c-5p and novel-mir50 and upregulated the LsAkt expression.It also rescued the reproductive development defects associated with miR-9c-5p/novel-mir50 overexpression,forming a positive regulatory loop of insulin signaling.These results indicate that miR-9c-5p/novel-mir50 regulates the female reproduction of L.serricorne by targeting Akt in response to insulin signaling.The data also demonstrate the effects of the insulin/miRNA/Akt regulatory axis in insect reproduction.

A Hybrid Level Set Optimization Design Method of Functionally Graded Cellular Structures Considering Connectivity

With the continuous advancement in topology optimization and additive manufacturing(AM)technology,the capability to fabricate functionally graded materials and intricate cellular structures with spatially varying microstructures has grown significantly.However,a critical challenge is encountered in the design of these structures–the absence of robust interface connections between adjacent microstructures,potentially resulting in diminished efficiency or macroscopic failure.A Hybrid Level Set Method(HLSM)is proposed,specifically designed to enhance connectivity among non-uniform microstructures,contributing to the design of functionally graded cellular structures.The HLSM introduces a pioneering algorithm for effectively blending heterogeneous microstructure interfaces.Initially,an interpolation algorithm is presented to construct transition microstructures seamlessly connected on both sides.Subsequently,the algorithm enables the morphing of non-uniform unit cells to seamlessly adapt to interconnected adjacent microstructures.The method,seamlessly integrated into a multi-scale topology optimization framework using the level set method,exhibits its efficacy through numerical examples,showcasing its prowess in optimizing 2D and 3D functionally graded materials(FGM)and multi-scale topology optimization.In essence,the pressing issue of interface connections in complex structure design is not only addressed but also a robust methodology is introduced,substantiated by numerical evidence,advancing optimization capabilities in the realm of functionally graded materials and cellular structures.

Experimental Study on the Effect of Increased Downstroke Duration for an FWAV with Morphing-coupled Wing Flapping Configuration

This paper is based on a previously developed bio-inspired Flapping Wing Aerial Vehicle(FWAV),RoboFalcon,which can fly with a morphing-coupled flapping pattern.In this paper,a simple flapping stroke control system based on Hall effect sensors is designed and applied,which is capable of assigning different up-and down-stroke speeds for the RoboFalcon platform to achieve an adjustable downstroke ratio.The aerodynamic and power characteristics of the morphing-coupled flapping pattern and the conventional flapping pattern with varying downstroke ratios are measured through a wind tunnel experiment,and the corresponding aerodynamic models are developed and analyzed by the nonlinear least squares method.The relatively low power consumption of the slow-downstroke mode of this vehicle is verified through outdoor flight tests.The results of wind tunnel experiments and flight tests indicate that increased downstroke duration can improve aerodynamic and power performance for the RoboFalcon platform.

Design strategies for rechargeable aqueous metal-ion batteries

Rechargeable aqueous metal-ion batteries(AMBs)have attracted extensive scientific and commercial interest due to their potential for cost-effective,highly safe,and scalable stationary energy storage.However,their limited output voltage,inadequate energy density,and poor reversibility of ambiguous electrode reactions in aqueous electrolytes strongly limit their practical viability.This review aims to elucidate the challenges of existing AMBs from the material design to whole device applications.We summarize the emerging electrochemistry,fundamental properties,and key issues in interfacial behaviors of various classes of prevailing AMBs,including aqueous alkali metal-ion batteries and multivalent-ion batteries,and present an appraisal of recent advances for addressing the performance deficiency.Specifically,the progress of zinc-ion batteries is highlighted to provide a ubiquitous guideline for their commercialization in the grid-scale energy storage.Finally,we figure out the dominating general challenges for achieving high-performance AMBs,laying out a perspective for future breakthroughs.

The role of lipid metabolism in osteoporosis:Clinical implication and cellular mechanism

In recent years,researchers have become focused on the relationship between lipids and bone metabolism balance.Moreover,many diseases related to lipid metabolism dis-orders,such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,atherosclerosis,obesity,and menopause,are associated with osteoporotic phenotypes.It has been clinically observed in humans that these lipid metabolism disorders promote changes in osteoporosis-related indicators bone mineral density and bone mass.Furthermore,similar osteoporotic phenotype changes were observed in high-fat and high-cholesterol-induced animal models.Abnormal lipid metabolism(such as increased oxidized lipids and elevated plasma cholesterol)affects bone microenvironment ho-meostasis via cross-organ communication,promoting differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to adipocytes,and inhibiting commitment towards osteoblasts.Moreover,disturbances in lipid metabolism affect the bone metabolism balance by promoting the secretion of cyto-kines such as receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand by osteoblasts and stimulating the differentiation of osteoclasts.Conclusively,this review addresses the possible link be-tween lipid metabolism disorders and osteoporosis and elucidates the potential modulatory mechanisms and signaling pathways by which lipid metabolism affects bone metabolism bal-ance.We also summarize the possible approaches and prospects of intervening lipid meta-bolismforosteoporosistreatment.

Aging Mechanism and Life Estimation of Photovoltaic Inverter DC-link Capacitors in Alternating Humid and Thermal Environment

DC-link capacitors play a vital role in managing ripple voltage and current in converters and various devices.This study focuses on exploring the aging characteristics of DC-link capacitors in alternating humid and thermal environments aligned with the operational conditions in photovoltaic and wind power applications.Adhering to relevant power equipment standards,we designed a 24-h alternating humid and thermal aging environment tailored to the requirements of DC-link capacitors.An aging test platform is established,and 20 widely used metallized polypropylene film capacitors are selected for evaluation.Parameters such as the capacitance,equivalent series resistance(ESR),and phase angle are assessed during aging,as well as the onset time and extent of aging at various intervals.This study focuses on the aging mechanisms,analyzing electrode corrosion,the self-healing process,and dielectric aging.Fitting the aging characteristics enabled us to calculate the lifespan of the capacitor and predict it under different degrees of capacitance decay.The results show that under alternating humid and thermal conditions,capacitance attenuation and ESR increase exhibit exponential nonlinearity,influenced by factors such as the oxidation and self-healing of capacitive metal electrodes,dielectric main-chain fracture,and crystal transformation.This study underscores the pivotal role of encapsulation in determining the aging decay time.

Molecular recognition of cyclophanes in water

Molecular recognition in water,the biological solvent,always receives significant research focus in supramolecular chemistry.The mechanisms of molecular recognition in water is key to comprehending biological processes at the molecular level.Over the past five decades,supramolecular chemists have developed a vast array of synthetic receptors with highly diverse structures and recognition properties.Among them,cyclophanes represent an important family of macrocyclic receptors that have been extensively explored.The aromatic moieties in cyclophanes not only facilitate chemical modifications to impart water solubility but also enable forming hydrophobic cavities for guest inclusion in aqueous environments.Pioneered by Koga et al.,who reported the first inclusion complex of cyclophanes in water and solid state,numerous water-soluble cyclophanes,including derivatives of blue box,calixarenes,resorcinarenes,pillararenes,octopusarenes,biphenarenes,coronarenes,and naphthotubes,etc.,have been synthesized and subjected to investigation of the recognition capabilities in aqueous solutions.This review provides an overview of cyclophane receptors designed to bind organic guests in water.We categorize them into two classes based on the modifications made to their hydrophobic cavities:those with“exo-functionalized hydrophobic cavities”and those with“endo-functionalized hydrophobic cavities”.We introduce their distinctive features and discuss strategies to enhance recognition affinity and selectivity.This review aims to inspire the development of novel synthetic receptors with intriguing properties and foster practical applications of cyclophanes.
