In recent years,the contamination of water by arsenic reached alarming levels in many countries of the world,attracting the interest of many researchers engaged in testing methodologies able to remove this harmful *** important aspect that must be taken into consideration is the possibility to find arsenic in different chemical forms which could require different approaches for its *** this aim,a speciation analysis appears to be crucial for better understanding the behavior of arsenic species in aqueous solutions,especially in presence of compounds with marked chelating *** can be identified as good sequestering agents and,at this purpose,this manuscript intends to investigate the interaction of As(Ⅲ)with three phosphonic acids derived from nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA)by replacements of one(N-(Phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid,NTAP),two(N,N-Bis-(phosphonomethyl)glycine,NTA2P)and three(Nitrilotri(methylphosphonic acid),NTA3P)carboxylic groups with the same number of phosphonate *** in-depth potentiometric and calorimetric investigation allowed to determine speciation models featured by simple ML,MLH i and ML(OH)species.A complete thermodynamic characterization of the systems is reported together with the definition of coordination mode by mass spectrometry *** the light of the speciation models,the possibility of using these ligands in arsenic removal techniques was assessed by determining the pL 0.5(the concentration of ligand able to remove the 50%of metal ion present in trace).All ligands show a good sequestering ability,in particular under the conditions of fresh water,following the trend NTA3P>NTA2P>NTAP.

Flow-induced vegetation uprooting in a meandering bend:Experimental investigation

Vegetation uprooting is a complex process which depends on many interrelated factors. In this paper,attention is focused on the flow-induced uprooting in river bends, where the flow characteristics vary as effected by the channel's curvature and its continuous changing in the downstream direction. Results are presented by an experimental work done in a high-amplitude meandering flume with mature herbaceous vegetation on the bed. In the first part of the paper, the variation along the bend of the geometrical(length, thickness, and radical architecture) and the mechanical(resistance force) characteristics of the roots are analyzed. In the second part of the paper, the transition from the condition of vegetation distributed on the bed to the condition of vegetation uprooted by the flow is experimentally *** results show that the flow-induced uprooting varies along the bend depending on the roots' geometrical and mechanical characteristics which are, in turn, influenced by the variation of the water surface elevation along the bend itself. It has been found that lower values of the resistance force occur at the apex section where the roots are characterized by higher values of length and lower values of thickness and have radical apparatuses characterized by limited encumbrance, a high number of roots,and low bushyness. The flow-induced uprooting especially develops close to the outer bank along the channel reach between the bend entrance and the apex section, where the root resistance force and the water surface slope tend to decrease in value.

Celiac disease(CeD)is a multifactorial autoimmune disorder spread *** exposure to gluten,a protein found in cereals like wheat,barley and rye,is the main environmental factor involved in its *** if the genetic predisposition represented by HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 haplotypes is widely recognised as mandatory for CeD development,it is not enough to explain the total predisposition for the ***,the onset of CeD comprehend a wide spectrum of symptoms,that often leads to a delay in CeD *** overcome this deficiency and help detecting people with increased risk for CeD,also clarifying CeD traits linked to disease familiarity,different studies have tried to make light on other predisposing *** were in many cases genetic variants shared with other autoimmune *** inherited traits can be regulated by epigenetic modifications,also induced by environmental factors,the most recent studies focused on the potential involvement of epigenetics in *** factors can in fact modulate gene expression with many mechanisms,generating more or less stable changes in gene expression without affecting the DNA *** we analyze the different epigenetic modifications in CeD,in particular DNA methylation,histone modifications,non-coding RNAs and RNA *** attention is dedicated to the additional predispositions to CeD,the involvement of epigenetics in developing CeD complications,the pathogenic pathways modulated by epigenetic factors such as microRNAs and the potential use of epigenetic profiling as biomarker to discriminate different classes of patients.

Celiac disease(CeD) is an autoimmune disorder, mainly affecting the small intestine, triggered by the ingestion of gluten with the diet in subjects with a specific genetic status. The passage of gluten peptides through the intestinal barrier, the uptake by antigen presenting cells and their presentation to T cells represent essential steps in the pathogenesis of the disease. CeD prevalence varies in different populations, but a tendency to increase has been observed in various studies in recent years. A higher amount of gluten in modern grains could explain this increased frequency, but also food processing could play a role in this phenomenon. In particular, the common use of preservatives such as nanoparticles could intervene in the pathogenesis of CeD, due to their possible effect on the integrity of the intestinal barrier, immune response or microbiota. In fact, these alterations have been reported after exposure to metal nanoparticles,which are commonly used as preservatives or to improve food texture,consistency and color. This review will focus on the interactions between several food additives and the intestine, taking into account data obtained in vitro and in vivo, and analyzing their effect in respect to the development of CeD in genetically predisposed individuals.

Enhancement of wettability in AZ91/B_(4)C system by a mechanical purification of liquid alloy

Mg-based alloys are potential candidate materials for a fabrication of lightweight boron carbide based composites through a reactive melt infiltration approach. In this paper, the effect of a mechanical purification of molten AZ91 alloy’s surface on its wettability with polycrystalline B_(4)C is experimentally evaluated for the first time. For this purpose, sessile drop experiments were performed under the same operating conditions(700℃/5 min;Ar atmosphere), by using both the classical contact heating(CH) and the improved capillary purification(CP) procedure. It was found that the evolution of contact angle values was strongly influenced by the applied procedure. In particular, by using the classical CH procedure, the presence of a native oxide layer on the metal surface hinders the observations of melting process, resulting in a misleading conclusion that the system is non-wettable. Contrarily, during the wetting test performed by applying the CP procedure, the surface oxide layer was mechanically removed by squeezing the molten AZ91 alloy through a capillary. Accordingly, the oxide-free AZ91 drop with a regular and spherical shape was successfully obtained and dispensed on the B_(4)C substrate. A reliable contact angle value of θ =83° was measured at the AZ91/B_(4)C triple line at 700 ℃, which in turn proves that B_(4)C is wetted by the liquid AZ91 alloy. In contradiction to the literature, these good wetting conditions were assisted by a non-reactive wetting mechanism occurring at the AZ91/B_(4)C interface. To succeed in the fabrication of AZ91/B_(4)C composites by liquid metal infiltration, such experimental observations make it reasonable to expect a spontaneous infiltration process exclusively driven by capillarity, which in turn increases the efficiency of the process by the absence of reaction products that could be a potentially detrimental factor.

In this paper,new improvements of methodological concepts upon examining wettability of high vapor pressure liquid metal systems(***-based alloys)in contact with refractory materials,are presented and *** this regard,high-temperature experiments on molten magnesium(Mg)in contact with graphite as a refractory substrate,were performed by utilizing a newly developed testing device and by applying a suitable experimental *** wetting experiments were carried out by the sessile drop method and under identical testing conditions(700℃/10 min under a protective gas atmosphere).Two different procedures were applied:the classical contact heating(CH)or a newly introduced capillary purification(CP)*** contact angle behaviors observed under the same conditions were strongly influenced by the applied ***,in the case of using the CH procedure,a presence of native surface oxide layer on the metal surface hinders the observations of melting process,making not possible to experimentally determine the wetting kinetics curveθ=f(t).Contrarily,during the wetting test performed on the Mg/graphite couple by applying the CP procedure,the native surface oxide layer was mechanically removed during the squeezing of the molten Mg through the hole of a ***,an oxide-free squeezed Mg-drop with regular and spherical shape was successfully obtained and dispensed on the graphite ***,the reliable contact angle value aroundθ=150°for the Mg/graphite system,was measured within the wetting test.

Thermo-active diaphragm walls have proved their effectiveness in the thermal conditioning of buildings and infrastructures. However, some aspects still need to be investigated in order to tailor methods and tools for an accurate prediction of their energy and structural performance. In this perspective, some issues are addressed that concern the definition of models for the numerical analysis, in particular issues about the modelling of geometry and thermal boundary conditions. Taking advantage of a monitoring programme on a real full-scale structure, this research focuses on the assessment of heat transfer process and thermal response of diaphragm wall and soil mass on the basis of field data. Understanding of the heat transfer process contributes to the definition of the time-dependent thermal boundary conditions at the excavation side. From the analysis of thermal gradients in the wall, the condition at the excavation side is recognised as a major factor that influences the heat transfer process, governing the direction of the heat flux in different seasons of operation of the geothermal system.
