Seasonal tropical cyclone(TC)forecasting has evolved substantially since its commencement in the early ***,present operational seasonal TC forecasting services still do not meet the requirements of society and stakeholders:current operational products are mainly basin-scale information,while more detailed sub-basin scale information such as potential risks of TC landfall is anticipated for decision *** fill this gap and make the TC science and services move forward,this paper reviews recent research and development in seasonal tropical cyclone(TC)*** particular,this paper features new research topics on seasonal TC predictability in neutral conditions of El Ni˜no–Southern Oscillation(ENSO),emerging forecasting techniques of seasonal TC activity including Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence,and multi-annual TC *** also review the skill of forecast systems at predicting landfalling statistics for certain regions of the North Atlantic,Western North Pacific and South Indian oceans and discuss the gap that remains between current products and potential user's *** knowledge and advanced forecasting techniques are expected to further enhance the capability of seasonal TC forecasting and lead to more actionable and fit-for-purpose products.

本文试图总结美国文化人类学的当代理论和方法论。这里所讨论的这些美国人类学的当代观念是基于它们的历史脉络、继承、重现、转变和对立。从20世纪60年代起,在诸如主观性、权力和民族志表述等问题上,人类学理论和方法论发生了许多非常显著的转变和分歧。这种状况起因于人类文化学研究的文学化途径,这种途径是经由格尔茨(Geertz)以及其他学术运动,如英国的文化研究(Cultural Studies),特别是福柯(Foucault)的后现代主义而发展起来的。由此,人类学由来已久的喧嚣的科学和人文之间的对峙已经演绎出独立的认识论阵营,在某些情况下导致了一些大学中人类学系的分离。同时,这种分裂也激发或伴随着一种对当代全球化形势下文化人类学研究对象的定位的承认,比如本土性(indigenous)、下层(subalterns)研究,确认了这些研究对象在研究项目中具有合法的权利和合作的声音。这种转向使人们愈加关注应用人类学,同时也伴随着许多新的问题,例如"本土知识"的观念。另一个分裂是一些特定的专门研究领域的学科建制,如医学人类学、生态人类学和教育人类学等,而这些领域的每一个又都存在着其内部分歧和区别。这些正在发生的变化引起了对于博厄斯学派所传承下来的诸如文化、文化相对主义等观念的效用和学术规范的质疑。过去的30年是一个骚动激荡、分崩离析的时期,人类学研究在这个时期卷入了全球资本主义的新的文化逻辑的转换之中。

Clostridium difficile is a Gram positive rod-shaped bacterium that produces two major toxins, A and B. The detection of the organism and its toxins has been widely carried out using specialized Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kits;however these generally have been unsuccessful in identifying all Clostridium difficile positive samples. In this study, fifteen clinically symptomatic patients from three of the five major regional hospitals in Trinidad were investigated for Clostridium difficile infections. Stool samples were assessed by ELISA and cultured isolates were characterized using agar dilution antibiotic sensitivity assays, conventional Polymerase Chain reaction (PCr), DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of toxin A and B genes. All 15 patient stool samples and isolates were positive for toxigenic Clostridium difficile via ELISA and PCr respectively. All isolates were positive for the housekeeping tpi and Toxin B genes by PCr but only three of these were positive for the Toxin A gene. The Toxin B gene sequences showed 100% similarity levels among isolates while the Toxin A gene sequences showed 99% similarity among isolates. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the strains isolated in Trinidad most likely belonged to the same strain/group. Agar dilution sensitivity tests showed highest susceptibility to Pipercillin/Tazobactam and Meropenem (87%) and the highest resistance was seen with Cefotaxime in 93%. These results indicate that similar virulent strains of C. difficile are present in the Trinidad population and that pathogenic strains are more likely to be susceptible to Pipercillin/Tazobactam and Meropenem.

A Transient but Protracted Geomagnetic Anomaly in the Sudbury Basin Following Two Near-Contiguous Intense Geomagnetic Storms

During the maintained quiescence between solar cycle 23 and 24, two unusually intense (K-indices = 7) global geomagnetic disturbances separated by 6 days occurred. They were followed by a protracted increase of between 150 and 200 nT in the vertical component of our local magnetic field (Sudbury, Ontario). The duration of the variation anomaly was unusually long, about 3 weeks, before returning to baseline following a one week period of below average intensity characterized by approximately 50 min periodicities. We suggest this anomaly supports previous research that specific temporal patterns of increased global geomagnetic activity when matched with local impedance/reluctance of ore bodies created the condition for remarkable transient changes in the surface static intensity of magnetic fields.

This paper utilizes the virtual water concept to evaluate water usage of agricultural production in West Texas. This work evaluates the measure of virtual water, as it relates to informing water policy in a semi-arid, agriculture-intensive region, which relies upon a minimally renewable groundwater resource. The results suggest that production in the region reflects a collective effort to capture the highest value from the water resource, consistent with the virtual water philosophy, even in the absence of specific water policy toward that goal. Additionally, this work takes advantage of high resolution data to reinforce the need to calibrate virtual water calculations to account for regional differences.
