Concentrated suspensions of Brownian hard-spheres in water are an epitome for understanding the glassy dynamics of both soft materials and supercooled molecular liquids. From an experimental point of view, such systems are especially suited to perform particle tracking easily, and, therefore, are a benchmark for novel optical techniques, applicable when primary particles cannot be resolved. Differential variance analysis（DVA） is one such novel technique that simplifies significantly the characterization of structural relaxation processes of soft glassy materials, since it is directly applicable to digital image sequences of the sample. DVA succeeds in monitoring not only the average dynamics, but also its spatio-temporal fluctuations, known as dynamic heterogeneities. In this work, we study the dynamics of dense suspensions of Brownian beads in water, imaged through digital video-microscopy, by using both DVA and single-particle tracking. We focus on two commonly used signatures of dynamic heterogeneities: the dynamic susceptibility, χ4, and the non-Gaussian parameter, α2. By direct comparison of these two quantities,we are able to highlight similarities and differences. We do confirm that χ4 and α2 provide qualitatively similar information, but we find quantitative discrepancies in the scalings of characteristic time and length scale on approaching the glass transition.

Specific contribution of mannose-binding lectin murine isoforms to brain ischemia/reperfusion injury

Selection criteria in resectable pancreatic cancer: A biological and morphological approach

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDA) remains one of the most aggressive tumors with a low rate of survival. Surgery is the only curative treatment for PDA, although only 20% of patients are resectable at diagnosis. During the last decade there was an improvement in survival in patients affected by PDA, possibly explained by the advances in cancer therapy and by improve patient selection by pancreatic surgeons. It is necessary to select patients not only on the basis of surgical resectability, but also on the basis of the biological nature of the tumor. Specific preoperative criteria can be identified in order to select patients who will benefit from surgical resection. Duration of symptoms and level of carbohydrate antigen 19.9 in resectable disease should be considered to avoid R1 resection and early relapse. Radiological assessment can help surgeons to distinguish resectable disease from borderline resectable disease and locally advanced pancreatic cancer. Better patient selection can increase survival rate and neoadjuvant treatment can help surgeons select patients who will benefit from surgery.

Molecular survey of tick-borne pathogens in Ixodid ticks collected from hunted wild animals in Tuscany, Italy

Objective: To determine the prevalence of zoonotic tick-borne bacteria in feeding ticks removed from hunted wild animals. Methods: PCR was executed on DNA extracted from 77 tick pools to detect Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella spp., Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsia spp. Results: A total of 432 ticks were collected: 30(6.94%) Haemaphysalis punctata, 72(16.7%) Dermacentor marginatus and 330(76.38%) Ixodes ricinus. For each animal one or two pools of 3 ticks of the same species was constituted. Seventy-seven tick pools were examined by PCR: 58(75.32%) resulted infected and among them 14(18.18%) showed co-infections. In particular, 29(37.66%) pools were positive for Bartonella spp., 23(29.87%) for Anaplasma phagocytophilum, 16(20.78%) for Rickettsia spp., and 5(6.49%) for Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. All samples were negative for Coxiella burnetii. Conclusions: The results demonstrate the presence of several zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in the studied area, and underline the risk of exposure to infections for hunters not only during the outdoor activity, but also when they manipulate hunted animals infested by infected ticks.

Adjusting ca19-9 values to predict malignancy in obstructive jaundice:Influence of bilirubin and C-reactive protein

AIM:To find a possible relationship between inflammation and ca19-9 tumor marker by analyzing data from patients with benign jaundice(BJ) and malignant jaundice(MJ).METHODS:All patients admitted for obstructive jaundice,in the period 2005-2009,were prospectively enrolled in the study,obtaining a total of 102 *** admission,all patients underwent complete standard blood test examinations including C-reactive protein(CRP),bilirubin,*** were considered eligible for the study when they presented obstructive jaundice confirmed by instrumental examinations and increased serum bilirubin levels(total bilirubin > 2.0 mg/dL).The standard cut-off level for ca19-9 was 32 U/mL,whereas for CRP this was 1.5 mg/*** ca19-9 level was adjusted by dividing it by the value of serum bilirubin or by the CRP *** patients were divided into 2 groups,MJ and BJ,and after the adjustment a comparison between the 2 groups of patients was ***,specificity and positive predictive values were calculated before and after the ***:Of the 102 patients,51 were affected by BJ and 51 by *** ca19-9 levels were found in 71.7% of the *** the group of 51 BJ patients there were 29(56.9%) males and 22(43.1%) females with a median age of 66 years(range 24-96 years),whereas in the MJ group there were 24(47%) males and 27(53%) females,with a mean age of 70 years(range 30-92 years).Pathologic ca19-9 serum level was found in 82.3% of *** levels were pathologic in 66.6% of the patients with BJ and in 49% with *** and ca19-9 average levels were significantly higher in MJ compared with BJ(P = 0.000 and P = 0.02),while the CRP level was significantly higher in BJ(P = 0.000).Considering a ca19-9 cut-off level of 32 U/mL,82.3% in the MJ group and 54.9% in the BJ group were positive for ca19-9(P = 0.002).A ca19-9 cut-off of 100 U/mL increases the difference between the two groups:35.3% in BJ and 68.6% in MJ(P = 0.0007).Adjusting the ca1

Localization of Seed Oil Body Proteins in Tobacco Protoplasts Reveals Specific Mechanisms of Protein Targeting to Leaf Lipid Droplets

Oleosin, caleosin and steroleosin are normally expressed in developing seed cells and are targeted to oil bodies. In the present work, the cDNA of each gene tagged with fluorescent proteins was transiently expressed into tobacco protoplasts and the fluorescent patterns observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Our results indicated clear differences in the endocellular localization of the three proteins. Oleosin and caleosin both share a common structure consisting of a central hydrophobic domain flanked by two hydrophilic domains and were correctly targeted to lipid droplets （LD）, whereas steroleosin, characterized by an N-terminal oil body anchoring domain, was mainly retained in the endoplasmic reticulum （ER）. Protoplast fractionation on sucrose gradients indicated that both oleosin and caleosin- green fluorescent protein （GFP） peaked at different fractions than where steroleosin-GFP or the ER marker binding immunoglobulin protein （BiP）, were recovered. Chemical analysis confirmed the presence of triacylglycerols in one of the fractions where oleosin-GFP was recovered. Finally, only oleosin- and caleosin-GFP were able to reconstitute artificial oil bodies in the presence of triacylglycerols and phospholipids. Taken together, our results pointed out for the first time that leaf LDs can be separated by the ER and both oleosin or caleosin are selectively targeted due to the existence of selective mechanisms controlling protein association with these organelles.

Postural instability after lumbar spinal surgery:are there any predictive factors? A case control study
