Obesity is a major health problem across the world, but there are few ways to effectively treat or manage it in the long term. Researchers are searching for more convenient, cost-effective and noninvasive therapies for overweight and obese people. Recent studies have illustrated that the microbiome of the body＇s different organs can be used as a vehicle for in-situ gene therapy. We suggest that the recombinant form of ＂Pichia pastoris＂ yeast expressing the hybrid protein of ＂irisin-furin-transferrin＂ under the control of the enolase 1 promoter is a new nutraceutical strategy to absorb fewer calories from intestinal nutrients, and induce a higher metabolic rate to expend more calories, similar to that from engaging in physical activity. By comparison, this method can be a long-term, noninvasive treatment and can be used for obese patients who have movement limitations.

A new colorimetric sensor based-azo dye for Cu^2+ detection was synthesized and characterized by FTIR and NMR spectroscopies. The results showed that the azo dye had a high selective and sensitive recognition toward Cu^2+. The solution containing the sensor changed color from pink to pale yellow with a hypsochromic shift in the presence of Cu^2+. The sensor selectivity and sensitivity toward Cu^2+ ions were investigated by colorimetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. For practical applications, a cellulosic textile test strip for high-selectivity detection of Cu^2+ ions in aqueous solution was developed using the synthesized azo dye as chromogenic chemosensor molecule, while using a solid cellulose textile as a substrate. As a result, a spectacular color change of the test strip was observed do pending on the amount of copper ions in contact with the strip, which allows an estimation of Cu^2+ concentration by naked eye.

The goal of this study is to enhance the efficiency of bacterial extracellular electron transfer (EET) in shewanella oneidensis MR-1 by enhancing adhesion to the electrode surface. Our results clearly show a major difference in attachment and behavior of s. oneidensis MR-1 for Ca2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Mg2+ compared to the control. The final microbial coverage, as measured by confocal microscopy and cathodic peak charge in cyclic voltammetry (Qpc), increases with increasing metal ion concentrations. We found the cells attached to the electrode increased more with the addition of metal ion concentrations in the following order of metals: Ca2+ > Pb2+ > Cd2+ > Mg2+ compared to the control. The effect of metal ions on metabolism of the bacteria was tested by the riboflavin production and glucose consumption. Metabolic activity mirrored the same order of the activity as the electrochemical results.

Dyslipidemia is a disorder where abnormally lipid concentrations circulate in the bloodstream. The disorder is common in type 2 diabetics (T2D) and is linked with T2D comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular disease. Dyslipidemia in T2D is typically characterized by elevated plasma triglyceride and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. There is a significant gap in the literature regarding dyslipidemia in rural parts of Africa, where lipid profiles may not be captured through routine surveillance. This study aimed to characterize the prevalence and demo-graphic profile of dyslipidemia in T2D in the rural community of Ganadougou, Mali. We performed a cross-sectional study of 104 subjects with T2D in Ganadougou between November 2021 and March 2022. Demographic and lipid profiles were collected through cross-sectional surveys and serological analyses. The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia in T2D patients was 87.5% (91/104), which did not differ by sex (P = .368). High low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was the most common lipid abnormality (78.9%, [82/104]). Dyslipidemia was associated with age and hypertension status (P = .013 and.036, respectively). High total and high LDL-C parameters were significantly associated with hypertension (P = .029 and .006, respectively). In low-resource settings such as rural Mali, there is a critical need to improve infrastructure for routine dyslipidemia screening to guide its prevention and intervention approaches. The high rates of dyslipidemia observed in Gandadougou, consistent with concomitant increases in cardiovascular diseases in Africa suggest that lipid profile assessments should be incorporated into routine medical care for T2D patients in African rural settings.

Objective: Comparison between semi-ablative and non-ablative radiofrequency for collagen stimulation. Method: Three volunteers with scheduled surgical procedures of abdominoplasty were selected. After the evaluation, the abdominal area was divided into three quadrants, with the right region receiving monopolar non-ablative radiofrequency (RF) application. In contrast, the left region received fractionated radiofrequency (FRF) application, using three different needle sizes (0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 mm), and the intermediate area was kept as a control. After 24 hours, surgery was performed, and the skin flaps were collected for histological and immunohistochemical analyses. Results: An increase in total collagen and type I collagen was observed in the treated groups. There was also an increase in the expression of COX-2, CD68 positive cells (macrophages), and lymphocyte markers (CD3, CD20, and NK-CD57). Furthermore, it was seen that only the use of 3.0-mm needles kept the channels open in the superficial tissue after 24 hours. There were no significant differences between the modalities. Conclusion: Non-ablative and sub-ablative radiofrequency have positive and effective results for flaccidity, demonstrating the success in collagen production. Furthermore, this study is the first to present channel opening and permanence time, which are important to optimize the action of drug delivery.

Objective: To report on a patient with Mü llerian agenesis (MA) and inguinal ovaries and to reviewthe pertinent literature. Design: Case report and literature review. setting: Clinical. Patient(s): A 12- year-old girl. Intervention(s): Magnetic resonance imaging, review of prior ovarian biopsies, karyotyping. Main Outcome Measure(s): Accuracy of diagnosis and preservation of ovarian function. Result(s): A 12- year-old girl with MA and bilateral inguinal ovaries is reported. An exhaustive review of the English literature on this rare association revealed only seven other well-documented such cases. Management of this condition involves reduction of the ovaries into the pelvis. Conclusion(s): The association of MA and bilateral inguinal ovaries is rare and possibly underreported. Ideal management consists of surgical reduction of the gonads into the pelvic cavity as soon as they are discovered, to decrease the risk of ovarian torsion and loss of ovarian function.

Objective: To describe a parasitic infection that probably affected the implantation of good-quality embryos in an in vitro fertilization(IVF) cycle. Design: Case report. setting: Tertiary care center in a university hospital. Patient(s): A 36-year-old Caucasian female with primary unexplained infertility. The patient underwent two cycles of IVF with good-quality embryos transferred; however, no pregnancy ensued despite adequate luteal support. Intervention(s): In vitro fertilization cycles, CBC, blood smear, evaluation for eosinophilia including serological evaluation for parasitic infections. Main Outcome Measure(s): Pregnancy. Result(s): Following treatment for filariasis, a repeat IVF cycle using the same stimulation protocol yielded a full-term pregnancy. Conclusion(s): This case is of particular importance because, to our knowledge, it is the first to describe a parasitic infection that probably affected the implantation of good-quality embryos in IVF cycles.
