Gualou Guizhi decoction promotes neurological functional recovery and neurogenesis following focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion

Recovery following stroke involves neurogenesis and axonal remodeling within the ischemic brain. Gualou Guizhi decoction （GLGZD） is a Chinese traditional medicine used for the treatment of post-stroke limb spasm. GLGZD has been reported to have neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemic injury. However, the effects of GLGZD on neurogenesis and axonal remodeling following cerebral ischemia remain unknown. In this study, a rat model of focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion. Neurologi- cal function was assessed immediately after reperfusion using Longa＇s 5-point scoring system. The rats were randomly divided into vehicle and GLGZD groups. Rats in the sham group were given sham operation. The rats in the GLGZD group were intragastrically administered GLGZD, once daily, for 14 consecutive days. The rats in the vehicle and sham groups were intragastrically administered distilled water. Modified neurological severity score test, balance beam test and foot fault test were used to assess motor functional changes. Nissl staining was performed to evaluate histopathological changes in the brain. Immunofluorescence staining was used to examine cell proliferation using the marker 5-bromo-2＇-deoxyuridine （BrdU） as well as expression of the neural precursor marker doublecortin （DCX）, the astrocyte marker glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） and the axon regeneration marker growth associated protein-43 （GAP-43）. GLGZD substan- tially mitigated pathological injury, increased the number of BrdU, DCX and GFAP-immunoreactive cells in the subventricular zone of the ischemic hemisphere, increased GAP-43 expression in the cortical peri-infarct region, and improved motor function. These findings suggest that GLGZD promotes neurological functional recovery by increasing cell proliferation, enhancing axonal regeneration, and in- creasing the numbers of neuronal precursors and astrocytes in the peri-infarct area.

Robust Face Recognition via Low-rank Sparse Representation-based Classification

Face recognition has attracted great interest due to its importance in many real-world applications. In this paper,we present a novel low-rank sparse representation-based classification(LRSRC) method for robust face recognition. Given a set of test samples, LRSRC seeks the lowest-rank and sparsest representation matrix over all training samples. Since low-rank model can reveal the subspace structures of data while sparsity helps to recognize the data class, the obtained test sample representations are both representative and discriminative. Using the representation vector of a test sample, LRSRC classifies the test sample into the class which generates minimal reconstruction error. Experimental results on several face image databases show the effectiveness and robustness of LRSRC in face image recognition.

Background Pediatric liver transplantation is an important modality for treating biliary *** overall survival(OS)rate of pediatric liver transplantation has significantly improved compared with that of 20 years ago,but it is still *** anesthesia strategy of maintaining low central venous pressure(CVP)has shown a positive effect on prognosis in adult liver ***,this relationship remains unclear in pediatric liver ***,this study was conducted to review the data of pediatric living-donor liver transplantation to analyze the associations of different CVP levels with the prognosis of *** This was a retrospective study and the patients were divided into two groups according to CVP levels after abdominal closure:low CVP(LCVP)(≤10 cmH2O,n=470)and high CVP(HCVP)(>10 cmH2O,n=242).The primary outcome measured in the study was the overall survival *** secondary outcomes included the duration of mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit(ICU),length of stay in the ICU,and postoperative stay in the *** demographic and perioperative data were collected and compared between the two ***-Meier curves were constructed to determine the associations of different CVP levels with the survival *** In the study,712 patients,including 470 in the LCVP group and 242 in the HCVP group,were *** propensity score matching,212 pairs remained in the *** LCVP group showed a higher overall survival rate than the HCVP group in the Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate Cox regression analyses(P=0.018),and the HCVP group had a hazard ratio of 2.445(95%confidence interval,1.163–5.140).Conclusion This study confirmed that a low-CVP level at the end of surgery is associated with improved overall survival and a shorter length of hospital stay.

Adaptive Control of a Flexible Manipulator With Unknown Hysteresis and Intermittent Actuator Faults

In this study, we consider a single-link flexible manipulator in the presence of an unknown Bouc-Wen type of hysteresis and intermittent actuator faults. First, an inverse hysteresis dynamics model is introduced, and then the control input is divided into an expected input and an error compensator. Second,a novel adaptive neural network-based control scheme is proposed to cancel the unknown input hysteresis. Subsequently,by modifying the adaptive laws and local control laws, a fault-tolerant control strategy is applied to address uncertain intermittent actuator faults in a flexible manipulator system. Through the direct Lyapunov theory, the proposed scheme allows the state errors to asymptotically converge to a specified interval. Finally,the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through numerical simulations and experiments.

Genetic dissection and validation of a major QTL for grain weight on chromosome 3B in bread wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)

Grain weight is one of the key components of wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)*** manipulation of grain weight is an efficient approach for improving yield potential in breeding programs.A recombinant inbred line(RIL)population derived from a cross between W7268 and Chuanyu 12(CY12)was employed to detect quantitative trait loci(QTLs)for thousand-grain weight(TGW),grain length(GL),grain width(GW),and the ratio of grain length to width(GLW)in six *** major QTLs,***-2D,***-2D,***-3B,***-4B.1,***-2D.1,***-2D.1 and ***-3B.1,were consistently identified in at least four environments and the best linear unbiased estimation(BLUE)datasets,and they explained 2.61 to 34.85%of the phenotypic *** interactions were detected between the two major TGW QTLs and three major GW *** addition,***-3B.1 and ***-3B were co-located,and the improved TGW at this locus was contributed by *** other loci,***-3B.1/***-3B had no effect on grain number per spike(GNS).They were further validated in advanced lines using Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR(KASP)markers,and a comparison analysis indicated that ***-3B.1/***-3B is likely a novel *** haplotypes were identified in the region of this QTL and their distribution frequencies varied between the landraces and *** to gene annotation,spatial expression patterns,ortholog analysis and sequence variation,the candidate gene of ***-3B.1/***-3B was ***,the major QTLs and KASP markers reported here provide valuable information for elucidating the genetic architecture of grain weight and for molecular marker-assisted breeding in grain yield improvement.

Radiative decays of charmed mesons in a modified relativistic quark model

In this study, we perform systematic estimations of the radiative decays of the charmed mesons in a modified relativistic quark model. Our estimations indicate that the branching ratios of the processes of D^(0)_(2)(1^(3)P_(2)) →D^(0)(1^(3)S_(1)) γ , D_3^0(1D_3) o D^(0)_(2)(1^(3)P_(2)) γ , D^(0)_(2)(2D_2^) o D_1^(0)(2P_1) γ , D_3^0(2^3D_3) o D^(0)_(2)(2^3P_(2)) γ , and D^(\ast 0)(1^(3)S_(1)) o D^0(1^1S_0) γ are of the order of 10^(-2) , which are sizable to be detected experimentally. Moreover, the branching ratios of some channels, for example, D_1^0(1P_1) o D(1^1S_0)^0 γ , D^0(3^1S_0) o D_1^( 0)(2P^_(1)) γ , and D^0(3^3S_(1)) o D^(0)_(2)(2^3P_(2)) γ , are estimated to be of the order of 10^(-3) , which may be accessible with the accumulation of data in future experiments.

Prediction of giant and ideal Rashba-type splitting in ordered alloy monolayers grown on a polar surface

A large and ideal Rashba-type spin-orbit splitting is desired for the applications of materials in spintronic devices and the detection of Majorana fermions in solids. Here, we propose an approach to achieve giant and ideal spin-orbit splittings through a combination of ordered surface alloying and interface engineering,that is, growing alloy monolayers on an insulating polar surface. We illustrate this unique strategy by means of first-principle calculations of buckled hexagonal monolayers of Sb Bi and Pb Bi supported on Al2O3(0001). Both systems display ideal Rashba-type states with giant spin-orbit splittings, characterized with energy offsets over 600 meV and momentum offsets over 0.3 ?-1, respectively. Our study thus points to an effective way of tuning spin-orbit splitting in low-dimensional materials to draw immediate experimental interest.

Learning multi-tasks with inconsistent labels by using auxiliary big task

Multi-task learning is to improve the performance of the model by transferring and exploiting common knowledge among *** MTL works mainly focus on the scenario where label sets among multiple tasks(MTs)are usually the same,thus they can be utilized for learning across the ***,the real world has more general scenarios in which each task has only a small number of training samples and their label sets are just partially overlapped or even *** such MTs is more challenging because of less correlation information available among these *** this,we propose a framework to learn these tasks by jointly leveraging both abundant information from a learnt auxiliary big task with sufficiently many classes to cover those of all these tasks and the information shared among those partiallyoverlapped *** our implementation of using the same neural network architecture of the learnt auxiliary task to learn individual tasks,the key idea is to utilize available label information to adaptively prune the hidden layer neurons of the auxiliary network to construct corresponding network for each task,while accompanying a joint learning across individual *** experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method is significantly competitive compared to state-of-the-art methods.
