Effects of Salacia lehmbachii ethanol root bark extract on estrous cycle and sex hormones of female albino rats

objective:To evaluate the effect of Salacia lehmbachii (S. lehmbachii) ethanol root bark extract on estrous cycle and sex hormones in female rats. Methods: Forty-eight virgin rats with regular 4-day cycle were grouped into four and each group was further subdivided into 'a' and 'b' (n=6). Each group was orally treated for 28 days with 2 mL of distilled water (control), ethanol root bark extract ofS. lehmbachii in doses of 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg/body weight (groups 2, 3, 4, respectively). Estrous cycle was determined daily using the vaginal smear method. Rats in'a' subgroups were weighed and sacrificed on the 29th day, and blood was collected for serum generation which was used for hormonal assay and sex organs were removed and weighed. Rats in 'b' subgroups were discontinued from treatment for 2 weeks and the parameters above were ***:The mean length of estrous cycle and duration of diestrous of treated rats were prolonged dose dependently compared to control. The increase was significant (Pother estrous phases were shortened in the same pattern. Relative weights of sex organs were reduced significantly (Pose. Sex hormones levels were significantly (Pompared to control. The above changes reverted towards the control values two weeks post ***: Ethanol root bark extract ofS. lehmbachii (high doses) has antifertility effect in female rats as it prolongs the estrous and diestrous cycle, and reduces serum sex hormones levels. The observed alterations were reversible.

Cyclooxygenase-2 plays a central role in the genesis of pancreatitis and associated lung injury

BACKGRoUND: The exact mechanism by which cyclooxy- genase-2 (CoX-2) promotes inflammation in pancreatitis in obscure. This study was undertaken to investigate the role of CoX-2 inhibition in an animal model of pancreati- tis , a disease process characterized by a systemic inflamma- tory response and ensuing neutrophil-mediated lung injury. METHoDS: Pancreatitis was induced in 24 Sprague-Daw- ley rats by intraperitoneal injection of 20% L-arginine (500 mg/100 g body weight). The animals were randomized into 3 groups (8 rats in each group); controls and rats with pancreatitis intravenously resuscitated with either normal saline (0.9% NaCl 3 ml/kg) at 24 and 48 hours or CoX-2 inhibitor (parecoxib 1 mg/kg). Pancreatic and lung inju- ries were assessed histologically. Lung injury was assessed utilizing wet;dry ratio and myeloperoxidase activity to in- dicate pulmonary neutrophil infiltration. A Western blot was used to determine CoX-2 protein expression in pancrea- tic tissue. RESULTS: The animals treated with CoX-2 inhibitors dis- played significantly less pancreatic and lung injuries than their normal saline counterparts. Histological pancreatic and lung injury scores were significantly reduced (P oX-2 treated group. Lung wet: dry ratios were sig- nificantly improved and pulmonary neutrophil infiltration was attenuated in the CoX-2 group (Pot analysis confirmed attenuated CoX-2 protein expression. CoNCLUSIoN: This study shows, for the first time in a rat model, that adjuvant CoX-2 inhibition significandy attenu- ates the severity of both pancreatitis and its associated sys- temic inflammatory response and end-organ injury.

Secondary Plant Metabolites of Natural Product origin—<i>Strongylodon macrobotrys</i>as Pitting Corrosion Inhibitors of Steel around Heavy Salt Deposits in Gabu, Nigeria

Investigation into the Inhibition of pitting corrosion in mild steel around heavy salt deposits by some selected secondary plant metabolites—alkaloid extract (AESML), saponin extract (SESML and flavonoid extract (FESML) of natural product origin—Strongylodon macrobotrys was successfully completed with the aid of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, gravimetric and gasometric experimentation. The research proved that the selected secondary plant metabolites were excellent inhibitors of mild steel in the salt water environment as inhibition efficiency was recorded at 99.2%, 92.6% and 84.7% for AESML, SESML and FESML. The inhibitors showed higher inhibition at lower temperature due to frequent scale redeposition from agitation in temperature rise and loss in collision of the molecules. The potentiodynamic polarization result confirmed the reduction in the loss of electrons at the anode by the inhibitors that would have trigger oxidation reaction that causes the anode to corrode. Charge transfer resistance reflected the maximum inhibition efficiency obtained for mild steel at maximum concentration and the decrease in double layer capacitance is due to the decrease of the area where electrolyte is present due to the formation of inhibitor film. Thermodynamic investigation shows that the inhibitor has the potential of increasing the energy of the intermediate, reducing both the number of collisions, and number of particles that have enough energy to react and also number of corrosion reaction particles with the correct orientation. The adsorption isotherm consideration shows physical adsorption mechanism with binding constant increasing with increasing temperature.

The development of high-performance and low-cost oxygen reduction and evolution catalysts that can be easily integrated into existing devices is crucial for the wide deployment of energy storage systems that utilize o2-H2o chemistries, such as regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we report an NHB-activated N-doped hierarchical carbon （NHC） catalyst synthesized via a scalable route, and demonstrate its device integration. The NHC catalyst exhibited good performance for both the oxygen reduction reaction （oRR） and the oxygen evolution reaction （oER）, as demonstrated by means of electrochemical studies and evaluation when integrated into the oxygen electrode of a regenerative fuel cell. The activities observed for both the oRR and the oER were comparable to those achieved by state-of-the-art Pt and Ir catalysts in alkaline environments. We have further identified the critical role of carbon defects as active sites for electrochemical activity through density functional theory calculations and high-resolution TEM visualization. This work highlights the potential of NHC to replace commercial precious metals in regenerative fuel cells and possibly metal-air batteries for cost-effective storage of intermittent renewable energy.
