Changes in Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics in a Native C4 Plant-Dominated Tidal Marsh Following Spartina alterniflora Invasion

Invasion of an exotic C_4 plant Spartina alterniflora has been shown to increase soil organic carbon(SOC) concentrations in native C_3 plant-dominated coastal wetlands of China. However, little is known about the effects of S. alterniflora invasion on SOC concentrations and fractions in tidal marshes dominated by native C_4 plants. In this study, a field experiment was conducted in a tidal marsh dominated by the native C_4 plant Cyperus malaccensis in the Minjiang River estuary, China. Concentrations of SOC and liable SOC fractions, dissolved organic carbon(DOC), microbial biomass carbon(MBC), and easily oxidizable carbon(EOC),were measured in the top 50-cm soils of the C. malaccensis community, as well as those of three S. alterniflora communities with an invasion duration of 0–4 years(SA-4), 4–8 years(SA-8), and 8–12 years(SA-12), respectively. Results showed that both SOC stocks in the 50-cm soils and mean SOC concentrations in the surface soils(0–10 cm) of the C. malaccensis community increased with the duration of S. alterniflora invasion, whereas SOC concentrations in the 10–50-cm soils decreased slightly during the initial period of S. alterniflora invasion, before increasing again. The pattern of changes in labile SOC fractions(DOC, MBC, and EOC) with invasion duration was generally similar to that of SOC, while the ratios of labile SOC fractions to total SOC(DOC:SOC, MBC:SOC, and EOC:SOC) decreased significantly with the duration of S. alterniflora invasion. The findings of this study suggest that invasion of the exotic C_4 plant S. alterniflora into a marsh dominated by the native C_4 plant C. malaccensis would enhance SOC sequestration owing to the greater amount of biomass and lower proportion of labile SOC fractions present in the S. alterniflora communities.

Syndromic and sporadic inflammatory/hyperplastic small-bowel polyps:a comparative study

Background:Inflammatory/hyperplastic small-bowel polyps(SBPs)occur either sporadically or in patients with a polyposis syndrome;however,comparison between these two settings of the histological features of SBPs has not been reported and the etiology of sporadic inflammatory/hyperplastic SBPs remains ***:Twenty-eight cases of sporadic inflammatory/hyperplastic SBPs and nine cases of syndromic SBPs were retrieved from the Department of Anatomic Pathology at the Cleveland ***-demographics and histological features were compared between the two ***:Patients with syndromic inflammatory/hyperplastic SBPs were younger(48 vs.63 years;P=0.007)and had higher rates of hemorrhagic telangiectasia(55.6%vs.0%;P=0.000),gastric polyps(87.5%vs.21.4%;P=0.001),and family history of colon cancer(62.5%vs.11.1%;P=0.014).Sporadic cases were more frequently associated with gastro-esophageal reflux(35.7%vs.0%;P=0.079)and anti-reflux medication use(55.6%vs.11.1%;P=0.026).Histologically,the syndromic SBPs were more often of pure intestinal type(45.4%vs.3.8%;P=0.005)and had prominent vessels(81.8%vs.42.3%;P=0.036).Conclusions:Patients with syndromic SBPs are younger and have higher rates of hemorrhagic telangiectasia,gastric polyps,and family history of colon ***,syndromic inflammatory/hyperplastic SBPs are more likely to be of pure intestinal type and to have prominent vessels.

We report the generation of high energy 2μm picosecond pulses from a thulium-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier *** all-fiber configuration was realized by a flexible large-mode area photonic crystal fiber(LMA-PCF).The amplifier output is a linearly-polarized 1.5 ns,100 kHz pulse train with a pulse energy of up to 250μ*** compression was achieved with(2+2)-pass chirped volume Bragg grating(CVBG)to obtain a 2.8 ps pulse width with a total pulse energy of 46μ*** overall system compactness was enabled by the all-fiber amplifier design and the multi-pass CVBG-based *** laser output was then used to demonstrate high-speed direct-writing capability on a temperature-sensitive biomaterial to change its topography(*** microchannels,foams and pores).The topographical modifications of biomaterials are known to influence cell behavior and fate which is potentially useful in many cell and tissue engineering applications.

My conversations with other English teachers generally turn to assessment once they find out that I have worked as a test developer. At that point, they immediately bemoan the overwhelming presence of tests in their own lives and their studentslives, and they sigh in resignation at having to teach test preparation classes for high -stakes standardized assessments of academic English such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). They feel these classes do not truly improve their studentsability to communicate in English, yet both students and teachers accept that spending time learning strategies or“tricks”that will lead to higher scores is a necessary evil in an environment that relies so heavily on testing.

Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions from aquatic ecosystems are important components of the global carbon cycle,yet the CO_(2)emissions from coastal reservoirs,especially in developing countries where urbanization and rapid land use change occur,are still poorly *** this study,the spatiotemporal variations in CO_(2)concentrations and fluxes were investigated in Wenwusha Reservoir located in the southeast coast of ***,the mean CO_(2)concentration and flux across the whole reservoir were 41.85±2.03μmol/L and 2.87±0.29 mmol/m2/h,respectively,and the reservoir was a consistent net CO_(2)source over the entire *** land use types and urbanization levels in the reservoir catchment significantly affected the input of exogenous carbon *** mean CO_(2)fluxwasmuch higher from waters adjacent to the urban land(5.05±0.87 mmol/m2/hr)than other land use *** with larger input of exogenous substance via sewage discharge and upstream runoff were often the hotspots of CO_(2)emission in the *** results suggested that urbanization process,agricultural activities,and large input of exogenous carbon could result in large spatial heterogeneity of CO_(2)emissions and alter the CO_(2)biogeochemical cycling in coastal *** studies should characterize the diurnal variations,microbial mechanisms,and impact of meteorological conditions on reservoir CO_(2)emissions to expand our understanding of the carbon cycle in aquatic ecosystems.

Joint Contact Forces with Changes in Running Stride Length and Midsole Stiffness

The purpose of this study was to determine if lower extremity joint loading was influenced by stride length or shoe midsole *** subjects completed 10 trials of overground running at an average speed of 4.43 m/s in each of three condi-tions:normal running,running with a stride length(SL)reduced by 10%of normal,and running with a cushioned midsole stiffness(i.e.,mechanical impact reduction of 13.7-10.9 g).Reaction forces calculated from inverse dynamics were summed with muscle forces estimated from a musculoskeletal model using static optimization to obtain joint contact forces at the hip,knee and ankle *** components of the contact forces[axial,anterior-posterior,and medial-lateral(ML)]were examined using parametric statistics(α=0.05).Reducing stride length resulted in significant decreases in absolute peak ankle contact forces in the axial direction(normal:-14.5±1.5 BW;reduced SL:-14.0±1.6 BW)and the ML direction(normal:0.67±0.23 BW;reduced SL:0.61±0.21 BW).Reducing stride length also reduced the peak absolute axial forces at the knee(normal:-10.6±1.3 BW;reduced SL:-9.8±1.2 BW)and the hip(normal:-7.26±2.24 BW;reduced SL:-6.75±2.10 BW).The cushioned shoe did not statistically reduce the peak absolute contact forces from the normal stride condition at any of the *** hoc stress analysis suggested that the observed changes in anterior hip force would increase stress more than any of the other statistically significant *** in stride length appear to decrease some joint contact variables but cushioning in the heel region of the shoe does not.
