Acoustic emissions (AEs) from xylem cavitation events are characteristic of transpiration processes. Though a body of work exists describing AEs and limited stem hydraulic conductivity under water stress, there is limited information about the effects of AEs on stomatal aperture and limitation on carbon assimilation. The objective of this work was to relate AEs to drought stress in cotton. cotton was grown in mini-lysimeters in the greenhouse and instrumented with a portable photosynthesis system and ultrasonic transducers connected to a digital signal-processing unit. Whole plant transpiration, leaf level gas exchange and ultrasonic AEs were measured. Xylem cavitation events temporally associated with the onset of drought stress. The results are consistent with stomatal closure in response to reduced hydraulic conductance from xylem cavitation events. clear direct empirical evidence of a reduction in carbon assimilation associated with xylem cavitation resulting from water stress is presented.

An experiment was designed to test whether ambient levels of UV-B radiation affect stomatal development, decrease stomatal density, and lead to increased water-use efficiency (WUE). Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] isolines with different stomatal distribution and flavonol expression patterns were field grown under shelters that either transmitted or blocked solar UV-B. All isolines exposed to solar UV-B accumulated higher concentrations of UV-screening phenolic pigments but other responses were isoline dependent. Solar UV-B decreased stomatal density and conductance in isolines expressing a unique branched kaempferol triglycoside. Decreased stomatal density was associated with increased season-long WUE and decreased internal cO2 concentration of leaf (estimated by δ13c discrimination). We concluded that photomorphogenic responses to UV-B affected stomatal density and WUE in field grown soybean;but that the magnitude and direction of these response were associated with isogenic pleiotropic differences in stomatal distribution and pigment expression. UV-B radiation had no effect on biomass accumulation or yield in a cultivar expressing only trace levels of kaempferol suggesting that flavonol expression is not prerequisite to UV-B tolerance.

AIM: To compare quality of life (QoL) outcomes in chinese patients after curative laparoscopic vs open surgery for rectal cancer. METHODS: Eligible chinese patients with rectal cancer undergoing curative laparoscopic or open sphincterpreserving resection between July 2006 and July 2008 were enrolled in this prospective study. The QoL outcomes were assessed longitudinally using the validated chinese versions of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of cancer QLQ-c30 and QLQcR38 questionnaires before surgery and at 4, 8, and 12 mo after surgery. The QoL scores at the different time points were compared between the laparoscopic and open groups. A higher score on a functional scale indicated better functioning, whereas a higher score on a symptom scale indicated a higher degree of ***: Seventy-four patients (49 laparoscopic and 25 open) were enrolled. The two groups of patients were comparable in terms of sociodemographic data, types of surgery, tumor staging, and baseline mean QoL scores. There was no significant decrease from baseline in global QoL for the laparoscopic group at different time points, whereas the global QoL was worse compared to baseline beginning at 4 mo but returned to baseline by 12 mo for the open group (P = 0.019, Friedman test). compared to the open group, the laparoscopic group had significantly better physical (89.9±1.4 vs 79.2±3.7, P = 0.016), role (85.0±3.4 vs 63.3±6.9, P = 0.005), and cognitive (73.5±3.4 vs 50.7±6.2, P = 0.002) functioning at 8 mo, fewer micturition problems at 4-8 mo (4 mo: 32.3±4.7 vs 54.7±7.1, P = 0.011; 8 mo: 22.8±4.0 vs 40.7±6.9, P = 0.020), and fewer male sexual problems from 8 mo onward (20.0±8.5 vs 76.7±14.5, P = 0.013). At 12 mo after surgery, no significant differences were observed in any functional or symptom scale between the two groups, with the exception of male sexual problems, which remained worse in the open group (29.2±11.3 vs 80.0±9.7, P = 0.026). cONcLUSION: Laparoscopic sphin

Objective: This case exemplifies the understanding of the physiological changes associate with 1) Left Ventricular Assist Devices, 2) monitoring challenges associated with Left Ventricular Assist Devices and 3) the usefulness of peripheral nerve blocks in this subset of patients. case report: A 73-year-old man was scheduled for left wrist arthroscopy and debridement to treat a very painful septic joint. He had undergone Heartmate II Left Ventricular Assist Device implantation uneventfully for Destination Therapy 4 months prior. The patient required maintenance of therapeutic anticoagulation. We elected for an ultrasound-guided axillary block, which limits the risks of vascular injury in presence of high INR. The axillary nerve block enabled us to overcome potential anesthetic problems in a patient with a continuous flow LVAD. conclusion: The physiologic principles of Left Ventricular Assist Device function should be understood before the initiation of anesthesia. Regional Anesthesiologists can offer a very significant contribution to the safe care of patients with heart failure requiring a continuous flow Left Ventricular Assist Device.

AIMTo assess KRAS G12D mutation detection by droplet digital PcR (ddPcR) in stool-derived DNA from colorectal cancer (cRc) *** this study, tumor tissue and stool samples were collected from 70 patients with stage I-IV cRc diagnosed by preoperative biopsy. KRAS mutational status was determined by pyrosequencing analysis of DNA obtained from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor tissues. The KRAS G12D mutation was then analyzed by ddPcR in FFPE tumors and stool-derived DNA from patients with this point mutation. Wild-type (WT) tumors, as determined by pyrosequencing, were included as controls; analysis of FFPE tissue and stool-derived DNA by ddPcR was performed for these patients as *** the total 70 patients included, KRAS mutations were detected by pyrosequencing in 32 (45.71%), whereas 38 (54.29%) had WT tumors. The frequency of KRAS mutations was higher in left-sided tumors (11 located in the right colon, 15 in the left, and 6 in the rectum). The predominant point mutation was KRAS G12D (14.29%, n = 10), which was more frequent in early-stage tumors (I-IIA, n = 7). In agreement with pyrosequencing results, the KRAS G12D mutation was detected by ddPcR in FFPE tumor-derived DNA, and only a residual number of mutated copies was found in WT controls. The KRAS G12D mutation was also detected in stool-derived DNA in 80% of all fecal samples from cRc patients with this point *** is a reliable and sensitive method to analyze KRAS G12D mutation in stool-derived DNA from cRc patients, especially at early stages. This non-invasive approach is potentially applicable to other relevant biomarkers for cRc management.

为了评估健康犬饲喂富含二十二碳六烯酸(DHA)鱼油对其成长的认知、记忆、心理活动、免疫学、视网膜功能,和其他监测值的影响。选择48只比格幼犬,幼犬在断奶后分成3组(样本数n=16/每组),并接受3种饲料(低DHA含量、中DHA含量、高DHA含量)中的一种作为它们的唯一营养,到1岁龄试验结束。在各个时间点对视觉线索辨别学习、记忆任务、心理活动表现任务、心理学进行测试(包括血液和血清生化分析、视网膜电图、双能X线吸收测量)。16周龄注射疫苗后,在1、2、4、8周对其抗狂犬病病毒的抗体滴度进行评价。结果显示,除鱼油的DHA含量浓度有不同外,食物有类似的组分分析结果;高DHA含量食物比其他食物也含有更高的VE、牛磺酸、胆碱、左旋肉碱浓度。高DHA含量的样本组比中和低DHA含量的样本组,其幼犬在反转学习任务、视觉系统对比辨别、障碍迷宫侧侧运动的早期心理活动能力方面有明显增高效果。高DHA含量的食物样本组比其他两个组在疫苗注射后1和2周内,分别有明显较高的抗狂犬病病毒的抗体滴度。在评估的所有时间点上,视网膜电图(ERG)暗视b-波的振幅峰值与血清DHA浓度呈显著正相关性。说明在幼犬断奶后,在日粮中添加富含DHA成分的强化鱼油或其他搭配的营养成分与幼犬神经认知发育有关,能改善生长期的认知、记忆、心理活动、免疫学、视网膜等功能。

人与宇宙始终为相即相融的关系,在诠释的活动中,主体客体始终无从分离,儒家经典的汉学解释和宋学解释,均不例外。通过分析《易经》"身体→语言→义理"思想架构,发现,其中《易》卦与人的身体对应,并反映客观的外在世界之规律。卦爻辞以身体源出天地阴阳之规律,视语言为发自身体而建构一切政治伦理价值,以字、词为核心,在卦爻辞中作种种的延伸衍释,等于运用语言来作为身体之内在价值与外在世界相遇的媒介。以此一宇宙观为基础,可了解到宋儒对于先秦经典中生命与宇宙一体的奥义,实有瑰丽而深邃的阐扬,但却忽略了语言的重要性;清儒注意到经典语言作为身体及义理实践的桥梁,也了解"语言多义性"的奥义,将宋明儒诠经忽略语言的偏失扭转过来。汉宋典范对儒典的解释,长短互见。儒家经典传统是跨越千百年时代交替的有机生命体,随着不断继起的新诠释,而持续发生转变与发展。
