Assessing the Oxidative Stability of Commercial Chia Oil

The fatty acid composition as well as the antioxidant composition and content of two commercially available chia oils of different origins were studied. The purpose of this work was the study of the oxidative stability from different methods and the antioxidant content of the chia oils compared with other commercial oils. The oxidative stability of the oils was determined based on the oxidative stability index test （OSI test） conducted at 110 ~C and isothermal as well as non-isothermal differential scanning calorimeter （non-isothermal DSC） for the chia oil and the linseed oil. The OSI induction time of chia oil was compared with that of commercially available linseed, canola, sunflower and high-oleic sunflower oils, chia oil being the least stable oil among those studied. The inherent stability value and oxidazibility for linseed oil was lower than the chia oil A may be ascribed to a lower linolenic acid content of the former. The induction time （It） quotient at 110 ~C calculated for chia oil A and linseed oil were similar, suggesting a high degree of consistency between the results obtained by the two methods. The activation energy and specific reaction rate constant of chia and linseed oils were compared based on the results of isothermal and non-isothermal DSC. An apparent inconsistency in the experimental data results from the temperature-dependence of the activation energy of each fatty acid which can explain because the methods conditions were different.

Composition and Thermal Behavior of Oils from Native Seeds and Fruits of Argentina and Uruguay

The purpose of this work was to study the thermal characterization of oils extracted from native seeds and fruits of the Argentina, Uruguayan region. This is important because it＇s necessary to find new applications for food industry. Uruguayan wild cardoon seed, Argentinian wild papaya seeds, Argentinian avocado pulp, Argentinian cherimoya seeds, Argentinian grapeseeds and four commercial brands of chia oils were studied. The thermal behaviors of the oils were analyzed on a differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）, TA Instrument, Q20 model equipped with an intercooler. These oils＇ thermal profiles presented differences, which are related to the compositions of fatty acids and triacylglycerols. The thermogram for the chia oil, with a high content of linolenic acid, presented a very important peak at about -40 ℃; whereas, the papaya oil with an oleic acid content of 74%, showed a peak at about -3 ℃. When comparing the thermal behaviors of these oils to commercial brand oils, it was found that the chia oil is similar to the flaxseed oil, the papaya similar to the olive oil and the avocado similar to the rice bran oil. The avocado oil, in particular, presents high solid content at cold store or winter temperatures, which would make its use in those conditions difficult （for example, a cosmetic cream or gourmet oil）. In conclusion, the thermal behavior of one oil sample as determined by DSC provides valuable information with regards to the possible use of new oils of American origin as replacement of usual commercial others.

Differential expression and function of the endogenous lactate receptor, GPR81, in ERα-positive/HER2-positive epithelial vs. post-EMT triple-negative mesenchymal breast cancer cells

Aim:Lactate can signal through the endogenous lactate receptor,GPR81,which is expressed in some *** metabolism is altered by the metastasis-promoting process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT).This study examined the expression and function of GPR81 in breast cancer samples,and in receptor-positive epithelial ***-negative post-EMT mesenchymal breast cancer ***:GPR81 mRNA expression was examined by breast cancer microarray,and by a Kaplan-Meier survival *** 3-dimensional culture conditions,GPR81 mRNA expression in epithelial and mesenchymal breast cancer cell lines was measured by ***81 siRNA was used to assess the role of GPR81,alone or in conjunction with tamoxifen,in the regulation of MCT1 and MCT4 lactate transporters,intracellular lactate,and cell proliferation and ***:GPR81 mRNA levels were elevated in receptor-positive breast cancer,relative to non-tumor and triple-negative samples,and correlated with increased ***81 expression was elevated in the two epithelial breast cancer cell lines *** corresponding post-EMT mesenchymal cell ***81 knock-down in epithelial MCF7 cells caused:1,selectively lower mRNA and protein expression of the MCT1 transporter,but not MCT2 or MCT4 ;transporters;2,lower levels of intracellular lactate;and 3,decreased proliferation and survival in lactate only-containing ***81 siRNA plus tamoxifen displayed additive suppressive effects on MCT1 expression and cell ***:GPR81 promotes the ability of epithelial breast cancer cells to import lactate for energy *** such,GPR81 represents a potential target for treatment of hormone-positive breast cancer cells,and may be prognostic for higher grade breast cancer.

Helicobacter pylori in human health and disease:Mechanisms for local gastric and systemic effects

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is present in roughly 50% of the human population worldwide and infection levels reach over 70% in developing countries. The infection has classically been associated with different gastro-intestinal diseases, but also with extra gastric diseases. Despite such associations, the bacterium frequently persists in the human host without inducing disease, and it has been suggested that H. pylori may also play a beneficial role in health. To understand how H. pylori can produce such diverse effects in the human host, several studies have focused on understanding the local and systemic effects triggered by this bacterium. One of the main mechanisms by which H. pylori is thought to damage the host is by inducing local and systemic inflammation. However, more recently, studies are beginning to focus on the effects of H. pylori and its metabolism on the gastric and intestinal microbiome. The objective of this review is to discuss how H. pylori has co-evolved with humans, how H. pylori presence is associated with positive and negative effects in human health and how inflammation and/or changes in the microbiome are associated with the observed outcomes.

Weight changes and patterns of weight measurements in hospitalized burn patients:a contemporary analysis

Background:Severe burn is associated with significant changes in body weight due to resuscitation volumes, fluid shifts, a hypermetabolic state, prolonged bed rest, and caloric intake. Our goal was to quantify and describe trends in weight change in patients with burns of all severities under modern treatment conditions and to identify the time points at which these changes occur. Methods: An institutional review board-approved chart review was conducted of acute burn patients treated at an American Burn Association-verified regional burn center from February 2016 to November 2016. Patients were then divided into three groups based on percent of total burn surface area (%TBSA) burn:1–19%, 20–39%, and≥40%. Weight was expressed as percent change of weight from baseline. Regression analysis was conducted on percent weight changes for each TBSA group. Results:We identified 197 burn patients with a length of stay (LOS) of≥7 days. Of the study cohort, 149 had TBSA burn of 1–19%, 27 had TBSA burn of 20–39%, and 21 had TBSA burn of≥40%. All groups had a majority of White male, non-Hispanic patients with mean ages between 40 and 42 years. Burn patients with>20%TBSA burn had a median increase in weight above baseline of approximately 5 to 8%likely due to resuscitation fluids within the first week of hospitalization. Weight loss below baseline often did not exceed 10% and was more pronounced as LOS increased, mostly in patients with >20% TBSA burn. Whereas patients with 1–19% TBSA burn on average returned to baseline weight at last measurement, patients with 20–39% TBSA and ≥40%TBSA burn continued a decline in weight at 4 weeks (r2=0.57 and 0.55, respectively) on the same trajectory. Conclusions:Burn patients with>20%TBSA burn had an increase in weight above baseline of up to 8%, likely due to resuscitation fluids within the first week of hospitalization. Weight loss below baseline often did not exceed 10%and was more pronounced as LOS increased, mostly in patients with>20%TBS

Universalities of earthquake-network characteristics

The scale-free and small-world properties are studied in detail for the complex earthquake networks constructed from the seismic data sets taken from California (USA), Japan, Iran and Chile. It is found that, in all these geographical regions, both the exponent / of the power-law connectivity distribution and the clustering coefficient C take the universal invariant values /≈1 and C≈0.85, respectively, as the cell size, which is the scale of coarse graining needed for construction of network, becomes larger than a certain value. A possible physical interpretation is given to the emergence of such remarkable invariance.

Loss of follow-up or reinfections hinder the expectations of hepatitis C eradicationdespite the existence of highly effective treatments. Moreover, the elimination ofthe infection does not imply the reversion of those chronic alterations derivedfrom the previous infection by hepatitis C virus (HCV). This review analyzes therisk factors associated with loss to follow-up in diagnosis or treatment, and thepossibility of reinfection. Likewise, it assesses the residual alterations induced bychronic HCV infection considering the liver alterations (inflammation, fibrosis,risk of decompensation, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver transplantation) and, onthe other hand, the comorbidities and extrahepatic manifestations (cryoglobulinemia,non-Hodgkin lymphoma, peripheral insulin resistance, and lipid, boneand cognitive alterations). Peculiarities present in subjects coinfected with humanimmunodeficiency virus are analyzed in each section.

墨西哥和中国都是制造业发达的发展中国家,同时也是世界上环境污染严重的国家。为了解决环境污染问题,中国和墨西哥都要求相关企业对生产过程和产品进行绿色创新,但是企业普遍担心这是否会为他们带来财务和环境绩效。本文旨在研究绿色创新活动对制造业企业绩效的影响。本文通过分析企业的绿色过程创新以及绿色产品创新来测量企业的绿色创新,企业绩效则使用财务绩效和环境绩效两个变量来评估。本研究的调查问卷发给了中国和墨西哥的企业,以此研究绿色创新和企业绩效之间的关系。利用相关分析和回归分析方法分别对中国和墨西哥的调查数据进行处理分析。结果显示,中国和墨西哥的绿色创新都对制造业企业的环境绩效和财务绩效都有正向影响。进一步,在墨西哥,绿色过程创新对制造业企业绩效的影响更显著,而在中国,绿色产品创新对制造业企业绩效的影响则更显著。最后,对两个国家的不同结果进行了对比分析,发现每个国家注重不同的因素,分别促成了绿色产品创新或绿色过程创新的成功。本研究在管理方面的意义是,绿色创新对制造业企业绩效的影响取决于企业所在国家的不同。来自某些国家的企业更加注重产品创新,而来自其他一些国家的企业更加注重过程创新,正如本文所研究的中国和墨西哥。因此,制造业企业为了实现企业绩效,在管理上应当同时关注绿色过程和绿色产品创新。
