Formation mechanisms of sub-micron pharmaceutical composite particles derived from far-and near-field Raman microscopy

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS) and confocal Raman microscopy are applied to investigate the structure and the molecular arrangement of sub-micron furosemide and polyvinylpyrrolidone(furosemide/PVP) particles produced by spray flash evaporation(SFE). Morphology, size and crystallinity of furosemide/PVP particles are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction(XRPD). Far-field Raman spectra and confocal far-field Raman maps of furosemide/PVP particles are interpreted based on the far-field Raman spectra of pure furosemide and PVP *** far-field Raman microscopy shows that furosemide/PVP particles feature an intermixture of furosemide and PVP molecules at the sub-micron scale. SERS and surface-enhanced confocal Raman microscopy(SECo RM) are performed on furosemide, PVP and furosemide/PVP composite particles sputtered with silver(40 nm). SERS and SECo RM maps reveal that furosemide/PVP particle surfaces mainly consist of PVP molecules. The combination of surface and bulk sensitive analyses reveal that furosemide/PVP sub-micron particles are formed by the agglomeration of primary furosemide nanocrystals embedded in a thin PVP matrix. interestingly, both far-field Raman microscopy and SECo RM provide molecular information on a statistically-relevant amount of sub-micron particles in a single microscopic map;this combination is thus an effective and time-saving tool for investigating organic sub-micron composites.

Does Particulate Organic Matter Fraction Meet the Criteria for a Model Soil Organic Matter Pool?

There is a well-recognized need for improved fractionation methods to partition soil organic matter into functional pools. Physical separation based on particle size is widely used, yielding particulate organic matter(POM, i.e., free or "uncomplexed" organic matter> 50 μm) as the most labile fraction. To evaluate whether POM meets criteria for an ideal model pool, we examined whether it is:1) unique, i.e., found only in the > 50 μm fraction and 2) homogeneous, rather than a composite of different subfractions. Following ultrasonic dispersion, sand(> 50 μm) along with coarse(20–50 μm) and fine(5–20 μm) silt fractions were isolated from a silt loam soil under long-term pasture at Lincoln, New Zealand. The sand and silt fractions contained 20% and 21% of total soil C, *** adopted a sequential density separation procedure using sodium polytungstate with density increasing step-wise from 1.7 to 2.4 g cm^(-3) to recover organic matter(light fractions) from the sand and silt fractions. Almost all(ca. 90%) the organic matter in the sand fraction and a large proportion(ca. 60%–70%) in the silt fractions was recovered by sequential density separation. The results suggested that POM is a composite of organo-mineral complexes with varying proportions of organic and mineral materials. Part of the organic matter associated with the silt fractions shared features in common with POM. in a laboratory bio-assay, biodegradability of POM varied depending on land use(pasture > arable cropping). We concluded that POM is neither homogeneous nor unique.

Modeling of a SiGeSn quantum well laser

We present comprehensive modeling of a Si GeSn multi-quantum well laser that has been previously experimentally shown to feature an order of magnitude reduction in the optical pump threshold compared to bulk *** combine experimental material data obtained over the last few years with k·p theory to adapt transport,optical gain,and optical loss models to this material system (drift-diffusion,thermionic emission,gain calculations,free carrier absorption,and intervalence band absorption). Good consistency is obtained with experimental data,and the main mechanisms limiting the laser performance are discussed. in particular,modeling results indicate a low non-radiative lifetime,in the 100 ps range for the investigated material stack,and lower than expectedΓ-L energy separation and/or carrier confinement to play a dominant role in the device properties. Moreover,they further indicate that this laser emits in transverse magnetic polarization at higher temperatures due to lower intervalence band absorption losses. To the best of our knowledge,this is the first comprehensive modeling of experimentally realized Si GeSn lasers,taking the wealth of experimental material data accumulated over the past years into account. The methods described in this paper pave the way to predictive modeling of new (Si)GeSn laser device concepts.

Microstructure Variation and Hardness Diminution During Low Cycle Fatigue of 55NiCrMoV7 Steel

The influence of temperature and hardness level on the cyclic behavior of 55NiCrMoV7 steel, and the mierostrueture variation and hardness diminution during low cycle fatigue behavior were investigated. By means of SEM and XRD, the modality of carbides and the full width half-maximum （FWHM） of martensite （211） [M（211）] of Xray diffraction spectrum in fatigue specimen were studied. The results showed that the cyclic stress response behav ior generally showed an initial exponential softening for the first few cycles, followed by a gradual softening without cyclic softening saturation. The fatigue behavior of the steel is closely related to the hardness level. The hardness diminution and the variation of half-width M（211） are remarkably influenced by the interaction between the cyclic plastic deformation and the thermal loading when the fatigue temperature exceeds the tempering temperature of the steel.

Machine learning inspired workflow to revise field development plan under uncertainty

We present an efficient and risk-informed closed-loop field development (CLFD) workflow for recurrently revising the field development plan (FDP) using the accrued information. To make the process practical, we integrated multiple concepts of machine learning, an intelligent selection process to discard the worst FDP options and a growing set of representative reservoir models. These concepts were combined and used with a cluster-based learning and evolution optimizer to efficiently explore the search space of decision variables. Unlike previous studies, we also added the execution time of the CLFD workflow and worked with more realistic timelines to confirm the utility of a CLFD workflow. To appreciate the importance of data assimilation and new well-logs in a CLFD workflow, we carried out researches at rigorous conditions without a reduction in uncertainty attributes. The proposed CLFD workflow was implemented on a benchmark analogous to a giant field with extensively time-consuming simulation models. The results underscore that an ensemble with as few as 100 scenarios was sufficient to gauge the geological uncertainty, despite working with a giant field with highly heterogeneous characteristics. it is demonstrated that the CLFD workflow can improve the efficiency by over 85% compared to the previously validated workflow. Finally, we present some acute insights and problems related to data assimilation for the practical application of a CLFD workflow.

Effects of External Stresses on the Carbide Precipitation in Bainite Transformation

TEM observation of carbide precipitates in bainite has been carried out for steel 40CMD8. Specimens transformed at 350 ℃ and 450 ℃ without external stress contain respectively the lower and the upper bainite. No fundamental change in carbide precipitation is observed in specimen transformed at 350 ℃ under stress of 128 MPa. The very fine cementite is found precipitated within the upper bainite plates in specimen transformed at 450 ℃ under stress of 144 MPa, which can be explained as the result of the difficulty of carbon diffusing out of the massive ferrite plate within a much shortened transformation time due to the external stress. For all the specimens examined, Bagaryatskii orientation relationship is found existing between the carbides and ferrite matrix.

Behavioral syndrome in a native and an invasive hymenoptera species

Recent studies have focused on the role of behavior in biological invasions. individuals may differ consistently in time for several behavioral traits （personality） which covary （behavioral syndrome） resulting in different behavioral types, some of them favoring invasion. Social hymenopterans have a strong potential to be invaders and their success depends primarily on the foundresses＇ ability to found viable colonies. They are expected to be active, explorative and bold for optimally establishing their nest. in Europe, 2 homet species coexist： the native Vespa crabro and the invasive Vespa velutina. These 2 species may compete for nesting sites and we suggest that the initial success of V. velutina has been favored by its behavior in outperforming V. crabro for the traits involved in nest initiation. Here, we （i） defined the personality of V. crabro and V：. velutina, （ii） tested for the existence of behavioral syndrome in these species, and （iii） compared their performances using an open-field test. Our results show that V. crabro foundresses behave consistently but not V. velutina; this lack of consistency being mainly due to reduced variance among individuals. This result questions the possibility of detecting consistent behavioral differences in species having recently undergone a strong bottleneck. Both species exhibit the same correlations between activity, boldness and exploration and V. velutina clearly outperforms 14. crabro for all traits. Our results suggest that activity, boldness, and exploration are implicated in both hornet nest initiation and invasion process which contributed to explain why social hymenopterans are so successful at colonization.

Source and possible tectonic driver for Jurassic-Cretaceous gold deposits in the West Qinling Orogen, China

The West Qinling Orogen(WQO) in Central China Orogenic Belt contains numerous metasedimentary rock-hosted gold deposits(>2000 t Au), which mainly formed during two pulses: one previously recognized in the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic(T3 - J1) and one only recently identified in the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous(J3 - K1). Few studies have focused on the origin and geotectonic setting of the J3 - K1 gold *** relationships, LA-iCP-MS trace element and sulfur isotope compositions of pyrites in hydrothermally altered T3 dykes within the J3 - K1 Daqiao deposit were used to constrain relative timing relationships between mineralization and pyrite growth in the dykes, and to characterize the source of ore fluid. These results are integrated with an overview of the regional geodynamic setting, to advance understanding of the tectonic driver for J3 - K1 hydrothermal gold systems. Pyrite in breccia-and dykehosted gold ores at Daqiao have similar chemical and isotopic compositions and are considered to be representative of J3 - K1 gold deposits in WQO. Co/Ni and sulfur isotope ratios suggest that ore fluids were derived from underlying Paleozoic Ni-and Se-rich carbonaceous sedimentary rocks. The geochemical data do not support the involvement of magmatic fluids. However, in the EQO(East Qinling Orogen), J3 - K1 deposits are genetically related to magmatism. Gold mineralization in WQO is contemporaneous with magmatic deposits in the EQO and both are mainly controlled by NE-and EWtrending structures produced by changes in plate motion of the Paleo-Pacific plate as it was subducted beneath the Eurasian continent. We therefore infer that the J3 - K1 structural regime facilitated the ascent of magma in the EQO and metamorphic fluids in the WQO with consequent differences in the character of contemporaneous ore deposits. if this is correct, then the far-field effects of subduction along the eastern margin of NE Asia extended 1000's of km into the continental inte
