The vanadium redox flow battery(VRFB)has been receiving great attention in recent years as one of the most viable energy storage technologies for large-scale ***,higher concentrations of vanadium species are required in the H_(2)O-H_(2)SO_(4) electrolyte in order to improve the VRFB energy *** might lead to unwanted precipitation of vanadium compounds,whose nature has not been accurately characterized *** this purpose,this study reports the preparation ofⅤ^((Ⅱ)),ⅤV^((Ⅲ)),Ⅴ^((Ⅳ))andⅤ^((Ⅴ))supersaturated solutions in a 5 M H_(2)SO_(4)-H_(2)O electrolyte by an electrolytic method,from the only vanadium sulfate compound commercially available(VOSO_(4)).The precipitates obtained by ageing of the stirred solutions are representative of the solids that may form in a VRFB operated with such supersaturated *** solid phases are identified using thermogravimetric analysis,X-ray diffraction and *** report that dissolvedⅤ^((Ⅱ)),Ⅴ^((Ⅲ))andⅤ^((Ⅳ))species precipitate as crystals of VSO_(4),V_(2)(SO_(4))3 and VOSO_(4) hydrates and not in their anhydrous form;conversely V^((Ⅴ))precipitates as an amorphous V_(2) O_(5) oxide partially *** measured hydration degrees(respectively 1.5,9,3 and 0.26 mol of H_(2)O per mol of compound)might significantly affect the overall engineering of VRFB operating with high vanadium concentrations.

The New Caledonia Ophiolite(Peridotite Nappe), represents about one third of the island’s surface(i.e. 5 500 km2). The ophiolite is composed of harzburgites, dunites, lherzolites, minor mafic-ultramafic cumulates, and various dykes and sills. The mantle section underwent a polyphase evolution, which involved prominent depletion and re-fertilization. The oldest events are probably recorded by abyssal-type lherzolites of the northern massifs, which bear traces of moderate partial melting. Plagioclase lherzolites were formed by shallow entrapment of highly depleted MORB melt in residual spinel lherzolites. Nd isotope compositions are consistent with derivation from an asthenospheric mantle source that experienced a recent MORB-producing depletion. This evolution was most likely accomplished during the late Cretaceous breakup of the eastern Australian margin. The harzburgite-dunite association, which forms the bulk of Peridotite Nappe was probably formed through a multistage magma-producing process. Harzburgites composition may have be obtained by a first phase of ~15% dry fractional melting, followed by 15%–18% hydrous melting in a supra-subduction zone setting. Variable εNd negatively correlate with 87Sr/86Sr, while Pb isotopes cover a wide range, trending from depleted mantle towards enriched, sediment-like, compositions. Such signatures likely reflect the evolution of a highly depleted forearc mantle wedge variably modified by different fluid and melt inputs during Eocene subduction. The harzburgite-dunite set is overlain by a dunite transition zone ~300 m thick, in turn discontinuously covered by cumulate lenses consisting of layered pyroxenites, dunites, and wherlites at the base and gabbronorites/websterites on top. The mafic cumulates crystallized from primitive, ultra-depleted melts in the nascent lower fore-arc crust. In particular, FME enrichments and Nd-Pb isotopes support an origin from a refractory mantle source modified by slab fluids for the gabbronorite

Background: The assessment of iron status using a single biomarker of iron metabolism is not enough sensitive and specific to reliably diagnose iron deficiency associated with multiple comorbidities. The objective of this study was to describe the iron status of people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa using a multi-criteria approach based on the determination of blood ferritin, sTfR, CRP and the calculation of sTfR-F index. Methods: This study was conducted using a retrospective panel of 933 sera/plasmas. We determined serum ferritin concentration, serum sTfR concentration, and C-reactive protein (CRP) by immunoturbidimetry for each subject. The sTfR-F index was determined by calculating the sTfR/log ferritin ratio. The statistical test used was Chi2. Results: Regardless of the inflammatory syndrome, we determined 3.80%, 30.29%, and 42.70% iron deficiency based on the separate interpretation of ferritin concentration, sTfR, and sTfR-F calculation, respectively. We used those biomarkers in addition to CRP in an algorithm for the diagnosis of iron deficiency. Subjects without inflammatory syndrome, had iron deficiency of 2.89% (n = 26). Taking into account the presence of an inflammatory syndrome, the frequency obtained was n = 88 (9.78%). Overall, iron deficiency was diagnosed in 114 (12.67%) patients when we used the diagnostic algorithm. Conclusion: The use of diagnostic algorithms combining several biomarkers of iron metabolism and taking into account the presence or absence of an inflammatory syndrome is a good approach to detect a large number of iron deficiencies in a population. Therefore, an assessment of the effectiveness of different diagnostic algorithms is necessary.

Waste Cashew Apple (Anacardium occidentale) as Feedstock for Simultaneous Production of Two Main Ecofriendly Fuels

The present work investigated an effective low-cost production of bioethanol by the use of rejected cashew apples (CAs) in Ivorian plantations. Fresh CAs were cut into 8-10 mm slices and submitted to a drying cycle of two periods (for the sake of easing their rehydration) in an oven with forced air convection. Temperature was first set at 30˚C for 3 hours, and then raised at 50˚C until constant weight. Drying brought about 82% weight loss, and the dried slices were rehydrated in a ratio of 1:4 (w/v) in warm distilled water to reconstitute a 10 Brix degree (˚B) juice with 1.042 g/cm3 density. The sugar content of the juice was increased to 20˚B (syrup) by thermal evaporation. The process was optimized using a response surface methodology (RSM) by applying a central composite plan in order to minimize heat-sensitive compound degradation. The optimal operating conditions for temperature and time of heating were precisely 68,239˚C and 83,314 min, respectively. The commercial baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to seed the 20˚B cashew apple syrup following a batch fermentation at 30˚C. The total alcohol content recorded after 24 hours was 8.24% ± 0.11% made up of almost 97% of ethanol and isobutanol (a higher alcohol). Analysis of alcoholic profiles by flam ionization detector-gas chromatography (GC-FID) showed an ethanol content of 3.92% and an almost similar but higher quantity of isobutanol (4.05%) with the latter being a by-product. As bio-based isobutanol attracts more and more attention due to its wide application and excellent fuel performance as compared to ethanol, it emerged from this study that neglected cashew apples can be successfully employed as valuable raw material for the simultaneous production of both biofuels currently used as sustainable sources of renewable energy.

Does Haptoglobin Phenotype Impact Infection Mortality?

Introduction: The physiological status of a subject and the pathophysiology in some diseases might be under the influence of haptoglobin phenotype. The objective of this work was to determine the relationship between mortality from HIV/AIDS infection and haptoglobin phenotype in a black population in Côte d’Ivoire. Methods: The study was conducted from a retrospective panel of 933 sera/plasma from the previous workup of the ANRS 12136 TEMPRANO trial at month 0 of patients in deferred-ART arms. For each subject, we determined the serum haptoglobin concentration, haptoglobin phenotype, and other variables from patient files from the TEMPRANO trial database. Statistical tests used were Chi-2, Fischer, and Kruskal-Wallis tests for non-gaussian distribution. We used the Kaplan-Meier method for survival analysis. Results: The distributions of the haptoglobin phenotypes were 32.3% for Hp 1-1, 39.5% for Hp 2-1 and 27.2% for Hp 2-2. The blood haptoglobin concentration seemed to be associated with haptoglobin phenotypes (p-value > 5%). The survival rate at M30 and for an extended follow-up up to 6 years was independent of haptoglobin phenotype (p-value > 5%). Besides, the haptoglobin phenotypes do not appear to be associated with CD4+ T-cell count and with hemoglobin concentration. Conclusion: Haptoglobin phenotype seems to not impact the mortality of HIV/AIDS infection. However, given the antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties of some haptoglobin phenotypes, it would be relevant to seek out possible confounding factors indirectly associated with haptoglobin phenotypes and clinical or biological infection variables.

Calcium acts as a second messenger for signaling to a variety of stimuli including MAMPs （Microbe-Associated Molecular Patterns）, such as fig22 and elf18 that are derived from bacterial flagellin and elongation factor Tu, respectively. Here, Arabidopsis thaliana mutants with changed calcium elevation （cce） in response to fig22 treatment were isolated and characterized. Besides novel mutant alleles of the fig22 receptor, FLS2 （Flagellin-Sensitive 2）, and the receptor-associated kinase, BAK1 （Brassinosteroid receptor 1-Associated Kinase 1）, the new cce mutants can be categorized into two main groups--those with a reduced or an enhanced calcium elevation. Moreover, cce mutants from both groups show differ- ential phenotypes to different sets of MAMPs. Thus, these mutants will facilitate the discovery of novel components in early MAMP signaling and bridge the gaps in current knowledge of calcium signaling during plant-microbe interactions. Last but not least, the screening method is optimized for speed （covering 384 plants in 3 or 10 h） and can be adapted to genetically dissect any other stimuli that induce a change in calcium levels.

We introduce a family of slot photonic crystal waveguides(SPh CWs) for the hybrid integration of low-index active materials in silicon photonics with energy-confinement factors of ~30% in low-index regions. The proposed approach, which is based on a periodic indentation of the etched slot in the middle of the SPh CW, makes it possible to reconcile a simultaneously narrow and wide slot for exploiting the two modes of even symmetry of a SPh CW. The resulting mode-selection mechanism allows a flexible choice of the modes to be used. Furthermore,the proposed structure offers tremendous flexibility for adjusting the dispersive properties of the slot-confined modes, in particular of their slow-light effects. Flat band slow light in a bandwidth of about 60 nm with a group velocity dispersion factor jβ_2 j below 1 ps^2∕mm is numerically demonstrated by this approach, corresponding to a normalized delay bandwidth product of around 0.4. These results, obtained from hollow-core periodic waveguides that are directly designed in view of hybrid integration of active materials in mechanically robust structures(not based on free-standing membranes) could pave the way for the realization of on-chip slow-light bio-sensing,active hybrid-silicon optoelectronic devices, or all-optical hybrid-silicon nonlinear functionalities.

Grain quality is an important agricultural trait that is mainly determined by grain size and ***, we characterize the role of the rice transcription factor （TF） SALT-RESPONSIVE ERF1 （SERF1） during grain develop-ment. Through genome-wide expression profiling and chromatin immunoprecipitation, we found that SERF1 directlyregulates RICE PROLAMIN-BOX BINDING FACTOR （RPBF）, a TF that functions as a positive regulator of grain filling. Lossof SERF1 enhances RPBF expression resulting in larger grains with increased starch content, while SERF1 overexpressionrepresses RPBF resulting in smaller grains. Consistently, during grain filling, starch biosynthesis genes such as GRANULE-BOUND STARCH SYNTHASEI （GBSSI）, STARCH SYNTHASEI （SSI）, SSIIla, and ADP-GLUCOSE PYROPHOSPHORYLASELARGE SUBUNIT2 （AGPL2） are up-regulated in SERF1 knockout grains. Moreover, SERF1 is a direct upstream regulator ofGBSSI. In addition, SERF1 negatively regulates germination by controlling RPBF expression, which mediates the gibberel-lic acid （GA）-induced expression of RICE AMYLASEIA （RAmylA）. Loss of SERF1 results in more rapid seedling establish-ment, while SERF1 overexpression has the opposite effect. Our study reveals that SERF1 represents a negative regulatorof grain filling and seedling establishment by timing the expression of RPBF.
