Is autoimmune hepatitis a frequent finding among HCV patients with intense interface hepatitis?

AIM:To evaluate the overlap of autoimmune hepatitis in hepatitis C virus(HCV)-infected patients with intense interface ***:Among 1759 patients with hepatitis C submitted to liver biopsy,92(5.2%) presented intense interface *** patients were evaluated regarding the presence of antinuclear antibody(ANA),anti-smooth muscle antibody(SMA) and anti-liver/kidney microsomal antibody(LKM-1),levels of γ-globulin and histological findings related to autoimmune hepatitis(plasma cell infiltrate and presence of rosettes).RESULTS:Among patients with hepatitis C and intense interface hepatitis there was a low prevalence of autoantibodies(ANA=12%,SMA=5%,LKM-1=0%) and the median γ-globulin level was within the normal *** histological findings of autoimmune disease were observed in only two cases(2%).After applying the score for diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis,only one patient was classified with a definitive diagnosis of autoimmune *** overlap with autoimmune hepatitis was not the explanation for the intense necroinflammatory activity in patients with chronic hepatitis C we sought to identify the variables associated with this *** presence of intense interface hepatitis was associated with more advanced age,both at the time of infection and at the time of the biopsy,and higher prevalence of blood transfusion and alcohol ***:Although possible,overlap with autoimmune hepatitis is a very rare association in HCV-infected patients with intense interface hepatitis,an unusual presentation which seems to be related to other host variables.

Management of hepatitis C in patients with chronic kidney disease

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection is highly prevalent among chronic kidney disease(CKD) subjects under hemodialysis and in kidney transplantation(KT) recipients, being an important cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. The vast majority of HCV chronic infections in the hemodialysis setting are currently attributable to nosocomial transmission. Acute and chronic hepatitis C exhibits distinct clinical and laboratorial features, which can impact on managementand treatment decisions. In hemodialysis subjects, acute infections are usually asymptomatic and anicteric; since spontaneous viral clearance is very uncommon in this context, acute infections should be treated as soon as possible. In KT recipients, the occurrence of acute hepatitis C can have a more severe course, with a rapid progression of liver fibrosis. In these patients, it is recommended to use pegylated interferon(PEG-IFN) in combination with ribavirin, with doses adjusted according to estimated glomerular filtration rate. There is no evidence suggesting that chronic hepatitis C exhibits a more aggressive course in CKD subjects under conservative management. In these subjects, indication of treatment with PEG-IFN plus ribavirin relies on the CKD stage, rate of progression of renal dysfunction and the possibility of a preemptive transplant. HCV infection has been associated with both liver disease-related deaths and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients. Among those individuals, low HCV viral loads and the phenomenon of intermittent HCV viremia are often observed, and sequential HCV RNA monitoring is needed. Despite the poor tolerability and suboptimal efficacy of antiviral therapy in CKD patients, many patients can achieve sustained virological response, which improve patient and graft outcomes. Hepatitis C eradication before KT theoretically improves survival and reduces the occurrence of chronic graft nephropathy, de novo glomerulonephritis and post-transplant diabetes mellitus.

Ni-based catalysts obtained from perovskites oxides for ethanol steam reforming

Perovskites as host structures of cations were used in order to generate in situ active and stable catalysts for ethanol steam reforming. For this purpose,La_(1-x)Mg_xAl_(1-y)Ni_yO_3(x = 0.1; y = 0,0.1,0.2,0.3) perovskites were synthetized by the citrate *** segregation is evident for a substitution level higher than 0. 2. The segregation of Ni as NiO generated species interacts with different metal-support after the reduction step. The y = 0.1 catalyst presents the highest H_2 yield value about 85% during reaction time,with low mean values of CH_4 and CO selectivities of 3.4% and 11%,respectively and a low carbon formation. The better performance of y = 0.1 catalyst could be attributed to the minor proportion of segregated phases,thus a controlled expulsion of Ni is successfully reached.

In recent decades the development of unsaturated soil mechanics has been remarkable, resulting in momentous advances in fundamental knowledge, testing techniques, computational procedures, prediction methodologies and geotechnical practice. The advances have spanned the full spectrum of theory and practice. In addition, unsaturated materials exhibiting complex behaviour such as residual soils, swelling soils, compacted soils, collapsing soils, tropical soils and solid wastes have been integrated in a common understanding of shared behaviour features. It is also noteworthy that unsaturated soil mechanics has proved surprisingly fruitful in expanding to other neighbouring areas such as swelling rocks, rockfill mechanics, and freezing soils. As a consequence, geotechnical engineering involving unsaturated soils can be now approached from a more rational and systematic perspective leading towards an improved and more effective practice.Unsaturated Soils contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Unsaturated Soil (barcelona, Spain, 6-8 September 2010). They report significant advances in the areas of unsaturated soil behaviour, testing techniques, constitutive and numerical modelling and applications. The areas of application include soil-atmosphere interaction, foundations, slopes, embankments, pavements, geoenviromental problems and emerging topics. They are complemented by three keynote lectures and three general reports covering general issues of modelling, testing and applications.Unsaturated Soils is a comprehensive record of the state-of-the art in unsaturated soil mechanics and a sound basis for further progress in the future. The two volumes will serve as an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners interested in unsaturated soils.

Dengue is a global health problem without current specific treatment nor safe vaccines *** severe dengue is related to pre-existing non-neutralizing dengue virus(DENV)antibodies,the role of T cells in protection or pathology is *** cutaneous DENV infection in immunocompetent mice we previously showed the generation of PNA+germinal centers(GCs),now we assessed the activation and proliferation of b and T cells in draining lymph nodes(DLNs).We found a drastic remodelling of DLN compartments from 7 to 14 days post-infection(dpi)with greatly enlarged b cell follicles,occupying almost half of the DLN area compared to*24%in na?ve *** clusters of proliferating(Ki-67+)cells inside b follicles were found 14 dpi,representing*33%of b cells in DLNs but only*2%in noninfected *** GCs,we noticed an important recruitment of tingle body macrophages removing apoptotic *** contrast,the percentage of paracortex area and total T cells decreased by 14–16 dpi,compared to *** randomly distributed Ki-67+T cells were found,similar to non-infected ***69 expression by CD4+and CD8+T cells was minor,while it was remarkable in b cells,representing 1764.7%of change from basal levels 3 *** apparent lack of T cell responses cannot be attributed to apoptosis since no significant differences were observed compared to noninfected *** study shows massive b cell activation and proliferation in DLNs upon DENV *** contrast,we found very poor,almost absent CD4+and CD8+T cell responses.

Damsin (1) is a natural pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene that inhibits NF-κb, a protein complex that controls the transcription of DNA in mammalian cells, and has a potential for standing model for the development of new anti-cancer lead structures. In order to do a preliminary structure-activity study and improve the anti-cancer activity, fourteen derivatives and analogs were prepared and evaluated. These were chosen to represent both structural diversity and structural novelty. The importance of α methylene-γ-lactone moiety for the anti-cancer activity was confirmed, even though other features in the scaffold were shown to be important for the activity. In some cases a new substitution negatively affected the initial activity, however, two analogues, indolo [3,2-c]-4-desoxydamsin (5) and ambrosin (6), were found to be more potent.
