Understanding the influence of petrographic parameters on strength of differently sized shale specimens using XRD and SEM

Ground failure is a major contributor to fatalities in underground mines in the *** coal mines in the Northern Appalachian have weak roof rock composed of shale,which is prone to failure under high horizontal *** the relationship among strength,specimen size and rock petrographic parameters is essential for developing an effective ground control *** effect studies have found that rock strength varies with specimen *** paper attempts to understand this strength variation using three specimen sizes(254-mm,508-mm,and 762-mm).The specimen strength was measured and the major petrographic parameters affecting the strength,namely grain size,grain shape,quartz content,clay content,*** analyzed using X-ray diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The petrographic parameters were then correlated with the strength of the three differently sized *** results showed that 508-mm specimen had the lowest *** content of the 508-mm specimen was lower than that of 254-mm and 762-mm *** content and average grain size of the 508-mm specimen were higher than those of 254-mm and 762-mm *** results clearly show that grain size,quartz content and clay content contribute to strength variation observed in differently sized shale specimens.

Polymers are widely used in bearing *** the case of water-lubricated stern tube bearings,thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU)-based composites are used due to their excellent wear resistance,corrosion resistance,and tunable mechanical *** tribological performance,however,depends on operating *** this work,TPU was blended with carbon fiber,graphene platelet,and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE).Friction tests of TPU based-composites against copper countersurface were carried out in water to mimic the actual operating conditions of the *** of the resulting contacts were in the boundary lubrication regime,in which friction was attributed to both contact mechanics of asperities as well as water *** results show that the viscoelasticity of TPU has a considerable impact on its tribological *** lubrication at 50°C promotes the softening of polymer surface material during sliding,resulting in higher fluctuation in the coefficient of friction and wear *** is attributed to the reduced thermomechanical *** addition,Schallamach waviness is observed on worn *** tribological properties of TPU are significantly improved by the inclusion of carbon fiber,graphene platelet,and *** formation of graphene transfer-layers and UHMWPE transfer film reduces friction and wear loss,while the inclusion of carbon fiber enhances wear resistance due to improved mechanical properties and load bearing capacity.

Global efforts to address malnutrition and hidden hunger, particularly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, have intensified, with a focus on enhancing the nutritional content of staple crops like rice. Despite serving as a staple for over half of the world's population, rice falls short in meeting daily nutritional requirements, especially for iron(Fe) and zinc(Zn). Genetic resources, such as wild rice species and specific rice varieties, offer promising avenues for enhancing Fe and Zn content. Additionally, molecular breeding approaches have identified key genes and loci associated with Fe and Zn accumulation in rice grains. This review explores the genetic resources and molecular mechanisms underlying Fe and Zn accumulation in rice grains. The functional genomics involved in Fe uptake, transport, and distribution in rice plants have revealed key genes such as OsFRO1, OsIRT1, and OsNAS3. Similarly, genes associated with Zn uptake and translocation, including OsZIP11 and OsNRAMP1, have been identified. Transgenic approaches, leveraging transporter gene families and genome editing technologies, offer promising avenues for enhancing Fe and Zn content in rice grains. Moreover, strategies for reducing phytic acid(PA) content, a known inhibitor of mineral bioavailability, have been explored, including the identification of low-PA mutants and natural variants. The integration of genomic information, including whole-genome resequencing and pan-genome analyses, provides valuable insights into the genetic basis of micronutrient traits and facilitates targeted breeding efforts. Functional genomics studies have elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying Fe uptake and translocation in rice. Furthermore, transgenic and genome editing techniques have shown promise in enhancing Fe and Zn content in rice grains through the manipulation of key transporter genes. Quantum-dot cellular automata （QCA） is an emerging area of research in reversible computing. It can be used to design nanoscale circuits. In nanocommunication, the detection and correction of errors in a received message is a major factor. Besides, device density and power dissipation are the key issues in the nanocommunication architecture. For the first time, QCA-based designs of the reversible low-power odd parity generator and odd parity checker using the Feynman gate have been achieved in this study. Using the proposed parity generator and parity checker circuit, a nanocommunication architecture is pro- posed. The detection of errors in the received message during transmission is also explored. The proposed QCA Feynman gate outshines the existing ones in terms of area, cell count, and delay. The quantum costs of the proposed conventional reversible circuits and their QCA layouts are calculated and compared, which establishes that the proposed QCA circuits have very low quantum cost compared to conventional designs. The energy dissipation by the layouts is estimated, which ensures the possibility ofQCA nano-device serving as an alternative platform for the implementation of reversible circuits. The stability of the proposed circuits under thermal randomness is analyzed, showing the operational efficiency of the circuits. The simulation results of the proposed design are tested with theoretical values, showing the accuracy of the circuits. The proposed circuits can be used to design more complex low-power nanoscale lossless cation architecture such as nano-transmitters and nano-receivers

In the field ofnanotechnology, quantum dot-cellular automata （QCA） is the promising archetype that can provide an alternative solution to conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor （~MOS） circuit. QCA has high device density, high operating speed, and extremely low powex consumption. Reversible logic has widespread applications in QCA. Researchers have explored several designs of QCA-based reversible logic circuits, but still not much work has been reported on QCA-based reversible binary subtractors. The low power dissipation and high circuit density of QCA pledge the energy-efficient design of logic circuit at a nano-scale level. However, the necessity of too many logic gates and detrimental garbage outputs may limit the functionality of a QCA-based logic circuit. In this paper we describe the design and implementation of a DG gate in QCA. The universal nature of the DG gate has been established. The QCA building block of the DG gate is used to achieve new reversible binary subtractors. The proposed reversible subtractors have low quantum cost and garbage outputs compared to the existing reversible subtractors. The proposed circuits are designed and simulated using QCA Designer-2.0.3.

Evaluating Fertilization Effects on Soil Physical Properties Using a Soil Quality Index in an Intensive Rice-Wheat Cropping System

Soil quality assessment has been suggested as an effective tool for evaluating sustainability of soil and crop management *** objective of this study was to develop a sensitive soil quality index(SQI) based on bulk density(BD),water-holding capacity(WHC),water-stable aggregates(WSA),aggregate mean weight diameter(AMWD),total organic C(TOC) and C input to evaluate the important rice-wheat cropping system on an Inceptisol in India.A long-term experiment has been conducted for 18 years at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research,Modipuram,*** treatments selected for this study were comprised of a no-fertilizer control and N,P and K fertilizers(NPK) combined with Zn and S fertilizers(NPK+ Zn+S),farmyard manure(NPK+FYM),green gram residues(NPK+GR) and cereal residues(NPK+CR),laid out in a randomized complete block design with three *** samples were collected and analyzed for BD,WHC,WSA and *** analysis revealed that both rice and wheat yields signi?cantly increased with the increases in AMWD,TOC and C input,but decreased with the increase in *** SQI values were then generated based on regression analysis of BD,WSA,AMWD,TOC and C input with rice and wheat yields for the 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil layers,*** analyses between crop yields and SQI values showed a quadratic type of relation with the coeffcient of determination(R^2) varying from 0.78 to *** regard to soil sustainability,applying crop residues to both rice and wheat could maintain soil quality for a longer period,whereas the highest yields of both the crops were recorded in the NPK+Zn+S *** regression equations developed in this study could be used to monitor soil quality in a subhumid tropical rice-wheat cropping system.

Investigating the Dominant Source for the Generation of Gravity Waves during Indian Summer Monsoon Using Ground-based Measurements

Over the tropics, convection, wind shear （i.e., vertical and horizontal shear of wind and/or geostrophic adjustment comprising spontaneous imbalance in jet streams） and topography are the major sources for the generation of gravity waves. During the summer monsoon season （June August） over the Indian subcontinent, convection and wind shear coexist. To determine the dominant source of gravity waves during monsoon season, an experiment was conducted using mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere （MST） radar situated at Gadanki （13.5°N, 79.2°E）, a tropical observatory in the southern part of the Indian subcontinent. MST radar was operated continuously for 72 h to capture high-frequency gravity waves. During this time, a radiosonde was released every 6 h in addition to the regular launch （once daily to study low-frequency gravity waves） throughout the season. These two data sets were utilized effectively to characterize the jet stream and the associated gravity waves. Data available from collocated instruments along with satellite-based brightness temperature （TBB） data were utilized to characterize the convection in and around Gadanki. Despite the presence of two major sources of gravity wave generation （i.e., convection and wind shear） during the monsoon season, wind shear （both vertical shear and geostrophic adjustment） contributed the most to the generation of gravity waves on various scales.
