Background:COVID-19 vaccines that trigger a strong secretory antibody response in breast milk may achieve effective passive protection of vulnerable newborns and breastfed infants of immunized mothers.The aim of this work was to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 spike RBD-specific IgA and IgG antibodies in breast milk,5 and 9 weeks after vaccination with 3 doses of the protein subunit vaccine Abdala,compared to those found in breast milk from COVID-19-recovered women,collected at least 40 days after the infection.Methods:SARS-CoV-2 spike RBD-specific IgA and IgG antibodies were semi-quantified by indirect ELISA,using a homemade standard generated by pooling twenty breast milk samples with high absorbance values according to preliminary data.The validity of the standard curves was proved following the European Medicines Agency Guideline.Two breast milk samples from 2 unvaccinated women who had not been infected with COVID-19 were included as negative controls.Potentially neutralizing antibodies was assessed by a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus neutralization test.Results:High levels of anti-RBD IgA antibodies were detected in breast milk samples 9 weeks after vaccination and anti-RBD IgG antibodies rise from the fifth to the ninth week.In the post-COVID-19 time that was evaluated,the IgG-type response was notably higher compared to both post-vaccination periods.Neutralizing antibody titers were similar in breast milk from vaccinated and COVID-19 recovered women.Conclusions:This is the first report about the immune response in breast milk after the administration of a COVID-19 protein subunit vaccine,which could provide analogous protection to that conferred by SARS-CoV-2 infection.This implies a potential passive immunity that breastfed infants receive from their mothers vaccinated with Abdala.

Contribution of the Open Access Modality to the Impact of Hybrid Journals Controlling by Field and Time Effects

Purpose:Researchers are more likely to read and cite papers to which they have access than those that they cannot obtain.Thus,the objective of this work is to analyze the contribution of the Open Access(OA)modality to the impact of hybrid journals.Design/methodology/approach:The“research articles”in the year 2017 from 200 hybrid journals in four subject areas,and the citations received by such articles in the period 2017-2020 in the Scopus database,were analyzed.The hybrid OA papers were compared with the paywalled ones.The journals were randomly selected from those with share of OA papers higher than some minimal value.More than 60 thousand research articles were analyzed in the sample,of which 24%under the OA modality.Findings:We obtain at journal level that cites per article in both hybrid modalities(OA and paywalled)strongly correlate.However,there is no correlation between the OA prevalence and cites per article.There is OA citation advantage in 80%of hybrid journals.Moreover,the OA citation advantage is consistent across fields and held in time.We obtain an OA citation advantage of 50%in average,and higher than 37%in half of the hybrid journals.Finally,the OA citation advantage is higher in Humanities than in Science and Social Science.Research limitations:Some of the citation advantage is likely due to more access allows more people to read and hence cite articles they otherwise would not.However,causation is difficult to establish and there are many possible bias.Several factors can affect the observed differences in citation rates.Funder mandates can be one of them.Funders are likely to have OA requirement,and well-funded studies are more likely to receive more citations than poorly funded studies.Another discussed factor is the selection bias postulate,which suggests that authors choose only their most impactful studies to be open access.Practical implications:For hybrid journals,the open access modality is positive,in the sense that it provides a greater number of potential readers.This in turn transla

Biosurfactant Production in Aerobic and Anaerobic Conditions by Different Species of the Genus Pseudomonas

In a time where surface active agents are capable of reducing the energy of the bonds between water molecules by interacting with them to reduce surface tension, it would be unwise not to be able to generate these in masses. Different Pseudomonas species were grown in MSP (minimal sulphate phosphate) media containing salts, glycerol and glucose. P. aeruginosa grown aerobically in the presence of glycerol as carbon source showed the highest emulsion percentage (81.48%), most significant decrease in surface tension (20 mN/m) and rhamnose production of 2.86 mg/mL. However, in anaerobic conditions there was no emulsion, rhamnolipid production or decrease in surface tension. The rhamnolipids were molecularly characterized using ESI-MS (electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry), P. aeruginosa CVCM 411 is able to produce mono-rhamnolipids and di-rhamnolipids, being rhamnolipid RhC 10 C 12:1 the predominant monomer. The specific growth rate for isolates of P. aeruginosa and P. fluorescens in MSP are 0.6732 h -1 and 0.2181 h -1, respectively. In conclusion, the formation of rhamnolipids by P. aeruginosa is linked to its growth (depending on μ), and its ability to generate about 35% of the μ max, in the presence of glucose (carbon source) and glycerol (applied as pulses).

Age,smoking and overweight contribute to the development of intestinal metaplasia of the cardia

AIM:To assess the role of Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori),gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD),age,smoking and body weight on the development of intestinal metaplasia of the gastric cardia(IMC).METHODS:Two hundred and seventeen patients scheduled for esophagogastroduodenoscopy were enrolled in this study.Endoscopic biopsies from the esophagus,gastroesophageal junction and stomach were evaluated for inflammation,the presence of H.pylori and intestinal metaplasia.The correlation of these factors with the presence of IMC was assessed using logistic regression.RESULTS:IMC was observed in 42% of the patients.Patient age,smoking habit and body mass index(BMI) were found as potential contributors to IMC.The risk of developing IMC can be predicted in theory by combining these factors according to the following formula:Risk of IMC = a + s-2B where a = 2,…6 decade of age,s = 0 for non-smokers or ex-smokers,1 for 10 cigarettes/d and B = 0 for BMI 25 kg/m2(BMI > 27 kg/m2 in females).Among potential factors associated with IMC,H.pylori had borderline signif icance(P = 0.07),while GERD showed no signif icance.CONCLUSION:Age,smoking and BMI are potential factors associated with IMC,while H.pylori and GERD show no significant association.IMC can be predicted in theory by logistic regression analysis.

Temperature Trends on Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). An Example of Global Warming over the Subtropical Northeastern Atlantic

The variation in temperature on the island of Gran Canaria is studied using the method applied to the nearby island of Tenerife [1]. An upward warming trend of 0.09°C ± 0.05°C (α = 0.01) was seen from 1946 to date, which has accelerated since the seventies to 0.17°C ± 0.10°C (α = 0.01). The increase was higher at night (0.11°C ± 0.05°C) than by day (0.08°C ± 0.06°C), so the temperature range decreased slightly. These values are similar to those of Tenerife and the time series of anomalies for the two islands are highly correlated. On the coast the same relationship to the sea surface temperature was found as in Tenerife, but in the mid-altitude areas to windward, some differences were detected that are hypothetically attributable to the different relief of the two islands.

Bacillus thuringiensis(Bt)toxins are effective in controlling insect pests either through the spraying of products or when expressed in transgenic crops.The discovery of endophytic Bt strains opened new perspectives for studies aimed at the control of sap‐sucking insects,such as the Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama(Hemiptera:Liviidae),a vector of“Candidatus Liberibacter spp.,”associated with citrus huanglongbing(HLB).In this study,translocation of endophytic Bt strains in citrus seedlings inoculated with Bt suspension delivered by soil‐drench,and their systemic pathogenicity to D.citri nymphs were investigated.The pathogenicity of three wild‐type Bt strains against D.citri third‐instar nymphs was demonstrated.Among the 10 recombinant strains tested(each of them harboring a single cry or cyt gene),3 can be highlighted,causing 42%–77%and 66%–90%nymphal mortality at 2 and 5 d after inoculation,respectively.The isolation of Bt cells from young citrus shoots and dead nymphs,and PCR performed with specific primers,confirmed the involvement of the Bt strains in the psyllid mortality.This is the first report showing the translocation of Bt strains from citrus seedling roots to shoots and their potential to control D.citri nymphs that fed on these soil‐drench inoculated seedlings.The Bt strains that caused the highest mortality rates have the potential to be used as bioinsecticides to control D.citri and the identified genes can be used for the production of transgenic Bt citrus.

Effect of the Growth Promoter VIUSID Agro on the Morphophysiological and Productive Performance of Tobacco Growth(Nicotiana tabacum L.)

With the objective of evaluating the effect of VIUSID agro on the morphophysiological and productive performance of tobacco seedlings,a randomised block experiment was designed with five treatments and three replications.The variants were:dosage of 0.2,0.5,0.7 and 1.0 L/ha and one control.The variables are recorded at three points of the cultivation cycle 10th,20th and 30th days after planting(DAP).Among the indicators evaluated were the fresh and dry mass of the plants,the leaves per plant,foliar area,the length and diameter of the stalk as well as the characteristics of the root.The rates of physiological growth and agricultural yield were also evaluated.The results showed a significant increase(p≤0.05)in the fresh and dry mass of the plants when VIUSID was used.Regarding the length of the stalk,the average increases of those treated in comparison to the control in the final evaluation were 28.42%,30.51%,41.17%and 38.43%.In terms of the diameter of the stalk and the foliar area in all evaluations,the treatments with VIUSID significantly exceeded the control.The absolute growth rate and net assimilation was significantly higher when the product was used.In the relative growth rate,the most favourable behaviour was the dosage of 0.5 L/ha,in final evaluation.With regard to yield,the best performance with significant differences(p≤0.05)to the other treatments was the dosage of 0.5,0.7 and 1.0 L/ha.Therefore,VIUSID agro had a positive influence on the morphophysiological and productive indicators of the tobacco seedlings.

Ultrastructural Aspects of Apoptosis in Systemic Sclerosis Inflammatory Myopathy

Muscle biopsies from two female patients with systemic sclerosis (SS) and an inflammatory myopathy were studied ultrastructurally in relation to the possible presence of apoptosis in skeletal muscle fibers. Undergoing apoptosis showed characteristic morphological features of this process, including chromatin aggregation as well as nuclear and sarcoplasmic partition into membrane bound-vacuoles (apoptotic bodies) which contained autophagosomes, mitochondria, isolated myofilaments and nuclear material. Vacuoles exhibited different diameters and were covered by single membranes, appearing beneath basement membrane. Apoptosis occurred in some fiber segments as in necrosis or included whole atrophied fibers. These results indicate that apoptosis coexists with necrosis in the inflammatory myopathy of SS.

Neuroinmunological response in HIV-associated Guillain-Barre syndrome: A case report

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus infec- tion is associated with several different types of peripheral neuropathy: distal predominantly sensory axonal polyneuropathy, like Guillain Barre syndrome. Case presentation: A 55-year-old Caucasian woman with Human immunodeficiency virus infection, diag- nosed with Guillain Barre syndrome was studied. Serum and CSF immunoglobulin G and Albumin levels were quantified by using an immunodiffusion technique. She had preceding viral symptoms. The clinical diagnosis of the illness in this patient was pa-resthesias or sensory loss, tendon reflexes. It was also observed cranial nerves abnormalities, acute mo- tor and sensory axonal neuropathy and ophthalmoplegia. The mean CD4 count was 367/mm3, CSF white blood cell 25 wbc/mm3. The serum sodium concentration was significantly low (133 mmol/L). She had a respiratory compromise as a result of their neuropa- thy and developed congestive heart failure and hy- potension and died of a cardiac arrest. The neuro-immunological response described by our patient was a blood/CSF barrier dysfunction without IgG intra-thecal synthesis. Conclusion: There is no doubt that this study is of great importance because will help clinicians increase their knowledge of the immune response in patients with this autoimmune disorder on the basis of this case report, in which, for first time, could be seen the neuroimmunological response through the reibergram in a patient with HIV- asso-ciated Guillain-Barre syndrome.
