We examined the findings from single- fiber electromyography in extensor digitorum communis (EDC) and orbicularis oculi (OOc) in 13 myasthenia gravis (MG) patients with musclespecific kinase antibodies (MuSK- MG) and 12 MG patients with acetylcholine receptor antibodies (AChR- MG) with similar clinical scores. More than 70% of AChR- MG patients had abnormal j.tter in both EDC and OOc, but the maj.rity of MuSK- MG patients had normal j.tter in EDC despite abnormal j.tter in OOc. These findings demonstrate clear differences between the neurophysiology of MuSK- MG and AChR- MG.

Circadian clocks mediate adaptation to the 24-h world. In Arabidopsis, most circadian-clock components act in the nucleus as transcriptional regulators and generate rhythmic oscillations of transcript accumulation. In this review, we focus on post-transcriptional events that modulate the activity of circadian-clock components, such as phosphorylation, ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation, changes in cellular localization, and protein-protein interactions. These processes have been found to be essential for circadian function, not only in plants, but also in other circadian systems. Moreover, light and clock signaling networks are highly interconnected. In the nucleus, light and clock compo- nents work together to generate transcriptional rhythms, leading to a general control of the timing of plant physiological processes.

The influences of adding sodium to zirconia on the acid-base properties of the surface and on the catalytic conversion of ethanol and acetone were investigated. The rates of ethanol dehydration, dehydrogenation and coupling were evaluated in a fixed-bed flow reactor operating at temperatures from 613 to 673 K. The rate of acetone condensation was evaluated in the same reactor operating at 473-573 K. Addition of 1.0 wt% Na to ZrO2 decreased the rate of ethanol dehydration by more than an order of magnitude, which was consistent with a neutralization of acid sites evaluated by ammonia adsorption microcalorimetry. Addition of 1.0 wt% Na to ZrO2 also increased the base site density quantified by carbon dioxide adsorption microcalorimetry and the rate of acetone condensation. Although the rate of ethanol coupling was not increased by the addition of Na, the overall selectivity of ethanol to butanol was improved over the 1.0 wt% Na/ZrO2 sample because of the significant inhibition of ethanol dehydration.

Novel analytical methods were developed for the determination of nitrapyrin and 6-chloropicolinic acid (6-CPA) residues in agricultural products. Nitrapyrin was extracted with hexane: toluene (1:1, v/v) and 6-CPA with 0.1 N sodium hydroxide (NaOH). For nitrapyrin, samples were cleaned with silica solid phase extraction (SPE) and for 6-CPA with C18 or carbon SPE. Analysis was performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS) with external calibration (0.010 to 0.0010 µg∙mL−1 for nitrapyrin and 0.0050 to 0.00025 µg∙mL−1 for 6-CPA). Recoveries for nitrapyrin and 6-CPA were 68% - 102% and 66% - 90%, respectively. Nitrapyrin was detected in celery and onion (−1) and 6-CPA in onion, mustard greens and lettuce (−1). Lower level method validation (LLMV) for nitrapyrin and 6-CPA was 0.020 µg∙g−1 and 0.050 µg∙g−1, respectively. The methods presented in this study are robust and were utilized for the registration of nitrapyrin on agricultural commodities in the United States.

Obj.ctive: To characterize the dermatitis, the newborn rash, and cutaneous findings in hyper-IgE syndrome, also known as j.b’s syndrome. Design: Prospective and retrospective evaluation and treatment of cutaneous manifestations in patients with a clinical diagnosis of hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES). Analysis of the newborn rash encountered in this population. Setting: Dermatology clinic at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. Patients: Forty-three patients seen in our clinic between j.nuary 1998 and August 2003 who had a clinical diagnosis of HIES. Interventions: The UK Working Party’s Diagnostic Criteria for Atopic Dermatitis were used to assess for atopic dermatitis in this population. To assess the newborn rash, we performed a retrospective chart review and an in-person or telephone interview of the parent or caregiver of each patient. Results: Twenty-eight (65%) of 43 patients fulfilled the criteria for atopic dermatitis. Thirty-five (81%) of 43 patients reported a newborn rash, Eight (19%) of 43 were born with the rash; 23 (53%) of 43 had acquired the rash within 7 days; 32 (74%) of 43 within 14 days; 34 (79%) of 43 within 30 days; and 35 (81%) of 43 had the rash within 35 days of birth. Conclusions: The dermatitis in HIES resembles classic atopic dermatitis but may have distinctive features. A newborn rash is almost always a presenting sign of HIES. After the newborn period, skin findings include retroauricular fissures, external otitis, infected dermatitis of the axillae and groin, folliculitis of the upper back and shoulders, cutaneous abscesses, mucocutaneous candidiasis, and in some patients pitted scarring of the face.

The logic and tools of model-building for stationary and nonstationary time series are developed in detail and numerous exercises, many of which make use of the included computer package, provide the reader with ample opportunity to develop skills in this area.;The core of the book covers stationary processes, ARMA and ARIMA processes, multivariate time series and state-space models, with an optional chapter on spectral analysis. The programs are all menu-driven so that the reader can immediately apply the techniques in the book to time series data, with a minimal investment of time in the computational and algorithmic aspects of the analysis.

The toughness of ferritic steels is influenced by the grain size distribution, second phase, precipitates and coarse inclusions. In this work an examination of the effect of coarse TiN particles （〉0.5 μm） and ferrite grain size on the Charpy impact transition temperature in high strength low alloyed steels has been carried out. Steels with high Ti content （up to 0.045 wt%）, have been heat-treated and furnace cooled to obtain a ferrite-pearlite microstructure with different ferrite grain sizes. Coarse TiN particle size and ferrite grain size distributions have been measured and Charpy impact testing has been carried out. Scanning electron microscopy （SEM） analysis has been used to measure the grain boundary carbide thickness and to determine if the coarse TiN particles are acting as cleavage initiation sites by fractographic analysis. The Charpy ductile-brittle transition temperatures （DBTT） have been predicted using standard literature equations, and compared to the measured values. The relationship between the ferrite grain size and coarse TiN particle size and number density in terms of whether the coarse TiN particles act as effective cleavage initiation sites is discussed in this paper.
