The University of Birmingham has pioneered and adapted the use of the medical imaging technique known as positron emission tomography （PET） to the study of particulate, granular and multiphase flows in industrial and physical processes, This paper provides a review of the PET and complimentary positron emission particle tracking （PEPT） techniques and details their application to the study of particulate sys- tems, The current state of the art, recent developments and example results from many of the applications to which these techniques have been applied are highlighted.

Residual dipolar couplings(RDCs)are powerful nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)probes for the structure calculation of biomacromolecules.Typically,an alignment tensor that defines the orientation of the entire molecule relative to the magnetic field is determined either before refinement of individual bond vectors or simultaneously with this refinement.For single-domain proteins this approach works well since all bond vectors can be described within the same coordinate frame,which is given by the alignment tensor.However,novel approaches are sought after for systems where no universal alignment tensor can be used.Here,we present an approach that can be applied to two-domain proteins that enables the calculation of multiple states within each domain as well as with respect to the relative positions of the two domains.

A detailed computational investigation,based on density functional theory,of the interaction of polyani-line(PANI)and graphene nanoribbons(GNRs)with SrTiO_(3) is presented.The adsorption of PANI in var-ious oxidation states and co-adsorption with GNRs is found to be thermodynamically favourable.Ad-sorbed PANI introduces N and C 2p states into the SrTiO_(3) bandgap,while co-adsorption of PANI and GNRs leads to a bridging of the gap and semi-metallic behaviour,thus rendering the electrical properties highly sensitive to the loading of the GNRs/PANI in the composites.Modelling the lattice dynamics of the composites predicts a 68-88%reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity due to reduced phonon group velocities.Taken together,these findings provide insight into the growing number of experimental studies highlighting the enhanced thermoelectric performance of oxide-polymer composites and indicate co-adsorption with graphene as a facile direction for future research.

The response of yeast to sharp environmental increases in calcium concentration has been extensively studied. However, systematic studies of the response under more general changes are still lacking. Only limited exploration of cellular responses has been conducted where calcium concentration is decreased. This article describes a set of luminometric experiments that monitor the cytosolic calcium concentration under changing external concentration conditions. As a decrease in external calcium concentrations requires the use of large sample volumes, the experiments require the use of equipment adapted for this purpose. We describe the modification of commercial luminometric equipment to make the exploration possible. We explore the yeast cellular behavior when an increase in external calcium concentration is followed by a decrease in external calcium concentration. We compare these results with those from the case of a double pulse of concentration increase. Results from the experiment show that the first, concentration increasing pulse produces the well-known sharp increase in cytosolic calcium followed by calcium sequestration to return to a cytosolic concentration near its initial condition. Surprisingly, the calcium decrease step shows similar results with a cytosolic increase followed by a return to lower levels. The results suggest the presence of a calcium sensing mechanism regulating calcium influx from external sources. This mechanism would produce channel opening as a response to any changes in external concentration, be it an enhancement or a depletion.

Concern has been raised about the ethics and risks of performing genetic interventions in macaque monkeys to study models of human neuropsychiatric conditions. Here I point out that,when the outcome of some situations is truly uncertain, human decision makers tend to evaluate these situations inconsistently. Background:The autoimmune disease Sj.gren's syndrome(SS)is often characterized by salivary changes that may affect swallowing.No known study has investigated the association between salivary biomarkers and perceptions of swallowing in individuals with SS.Our obj.ctives were to explore:(1)the operational feasibility of investigating saliva volume and composition,along with perceptions of swallowing,in those with and without SS;and(2)the relationship between saliva composition and perceptions of oral dryness,swallowing,and quality of life.Methods:We conducted a prospective,case–control feasibility study,collecting feasibility data(recruitment rate and optimal saliva collection methods)and whole mouth saliva samples(unstimulated and stimulated).We measured total protein content and conducted sialochemical(α-amylase,cortisol,C-reactive protein[CRP],and mucins),sialometric(flow rate),and perceptual(oral dryness and swallowing-related quality of life[SWAL-QOL])assessments.Our exploratory analyses focused on the main and fixed effects.We summarized all data descriptively,comparing:(a)outcomes between groups(t tests or Mann–Whitney U)and(b)salivary and perceptual data across participants(partial least-squares correlation[PLSC]).Results:We enrolled 12(N)participants(6 per group),all providing analyzable saliva.Cases had lower flow rate(p=0.003)and higher total protein,cortisol,and CRP concentrations(p<0.02)than controls.PLSC revealed inverse covariance between sialochemical and SWAL-QOL data across participants.Conclusion:Our study was feasible as designed.We explored novel relationships between salivary outcomes and participant-reported perceptions,distinguishing individuals with and without SS.Our findings support further study of saliva's role in perceptions of swallowing,specifically analytes with lubricative properties.

We tested whether continuous cohabitation in monogamous voles affects the mated male＇s atten-tiveness to his breeding partner versus another female. Each male was housed in a 3-chamber ap-paratus with a Focal female （FF） and a Control female （CF） for 13 days then placed in a T-maze toassess his attentiveness to and memory of those females. The Distal male remained physically sep-arated from both females, but received their distal cues. The Separate male cohabited with the FFfor 3 days then remained physically separated from both females. The Disrupt male＇s continuouscohabitation with the FF was disrupted by having him physically separated from her after 10 daysand placed with the CF for the last 3 days. The Continuous male cohabited continuously with the FFfor 13 days. With females in the T-maze, the Separate and Disrupt males spent more time near theFF＇s box and the Disrupt males spent more time manipulating the FF＇s box than the CF＇s box. TheSeparate males groomed themselves more when near the FF＇s box than the CF＇s box. The Distaland Continuous males＇ attentiveness to the two females did not differ. Results suggest that phys-ical distance from the partner may reduce male＇s attentiveness toward other potential mates.Prairie voles might be similar to socially monogamous primates in using tactile cues as a signal formaintaining their social bonds.

The identification of j.ts originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced background.This paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS experiment.Two taggers with high performances in rej.cting j.ts from gluon over j.ts from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the j.t,and the other combines several j.t substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the j.t pseudorapidity.Differences in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for j.ts with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
