The angiotensin receptors type 1 (AT1) have affinity by Losartan?, low affinity to non-peptides antagonists and similar effect as Angiotensin-convert-enzyme inhibitors. It have been reported that natural and synthetic products might reduce the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects related to stannous chloride (SnCl2). SnCl2 is used in nuclear medicine as a reducing agent to obtain technetium-99 m-radiopharmaceuticals. The aim of this work was to evaluate the cellular effects produced by a solution of Losartan? (25 mg/ml) on the survival of Escherichia coli AB1157 in the presence and absence of SnCl2, and on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes of the blood of Wistar rats. Briefly, blood sample was withdrawn by Wistar rats with heparinized syringe and incubated with Losartan? solution. Saline (NaCL 0.9%) was used as a control. The samples were gently mixed with hypotonic solutions of NaCl. After that it was centrifuged and the supernadant isolated for optical determination of the hemoglobin present. E. coli AB1157 cultures (exponential growth phase) were collected by centrifugation, washed and resuspended in 0.9%NaCl. Samples were incubated in water bath shaker with: (a) SnCl2 (25 μg/ml), (b) Losartan? (25 mg/ml) and (c) SnCl2 (25 μg/ml) + Losartan? (25 mg/ml). Incubation with 0.9% NaCl was also carried out (control). At 60 min intervals, aliquots were withdrawn, diluted, spread onto Petri dishes with solid LB medium and incubated overnight. The colonies formed were counted and the survival fractions calculated. Statistical analysis was performed. The results showed that there was a significantly increase (P < 0.05) in the osmotic fragility of the blood cells treated with Losartan?. Moreover, Losartan? was also able to protect the E. coli cultures against the lesive action of SnCl2. Although, in erythrocyte the osmotic fragility was increased by the presence of Losartan? that could 1) alter the physical properties of this cell, or 2) had a direct or indirect effect on the

Microwave-ultrasound assisted extraction of red corn pigments and their effect on chemical composition and tecno-functional properties

Currently, there is a growing interest in obtaining natural pigments, without presenting a risk to health, as well as to the matrix and food safety. The objective of this study was to characterize grains with different shades of red color (High pigmentation maize = RA, Medium pigmentation maize = RM, and Low pigmentation maize = RB, reddish maize with white segments = VO and white maize control = SC). The physical properties (kernel weight, length, width, thickness, and grain and flour color), chemical composition (moisture, fat, protein, fiber, starch, ash, and minerals), and techno-functional properties (capacity of absorption of organic molecules (OMAC), swelling (CH), oil retention (CAAC), and water absorption (WAS)) variables were measured. Afterward, RM was selected, and a pigment extraction (EAUM) was carried out using microwave-ultrasound equipment with different ratios of ethanol (0, 30, and 70%) and citric acid ratios (0 and 1%). The color and properties of the solid (starch, protein, fat, and their techno-functional properties) were determined in the aqueous phase and were compared with the properties prior to EAUM. The results indicated that the red grains have higher starch content (57.6%) and reddish colors, in addition, VO presented higher moisture (10.4%), fat (6.7%) and fiber (10.0%). The colors of the pigments obtained with EtOH (30 and 70%) show shades red and yellow. Finally, the EAUM decreased the fat content up to 57%, increased WAS and CAAC in the residual flour and generated changes in OMAC and CH, increasing in aqueous medium and reducing with EtOH.

Update on the use of portable monitoring system for the diagnosis of sleep apnea in specific population

The prevalence and severity of obstructive sleep apnea(OSA) is higher in specific population: children, elderly,obese and patients with pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, compared to the general population. OSA is associated with greater morbidity and mortality in these patients. Although full-night polysomnography is still the gold standard diagnostic sleep study for OSA, it is a time consuming, expensive and technically demanding exam. Over the last few years, there is growing evidence on the use of portable monitors(PM) as an alternative for the diagnosis of OSA. These devices were developed specially for sleep evaluation at home, at a familiar environment, with easy selfapplication of monitoring, unattended. The use of PM is stablished for populations with high pre-test probability of OSA. However, there is a lack of studies on the use of PM in age extremes and patients with comorbidities. The purpose of this review is to present the studies that evaluated the use of PM in specific population, as well as to describe the advantages, limitations and applications of these devices in this particular group of patients. Although the total loss rate of recordings is variable in different studies, the agreement with fullnight polysomnography justifies the use of PM in this population.

A decade without diagnosis: Sheehan’s syndrome

Sheehan’s Syndrome (SS) occurs as a result of ischemic pituitary necrosis due to severe post-partum hemorrhage. We report a 41-year-old woman with a history of severe postpartum hemorrhage 18 years prior to presentation. During this period of time, she experienced severe fatigue. Three months prior to being admitted to our hospital, the patient started to notice alopecia, generalized edema and cognitive impairment. After proper investigation, laboratory tests and clinical findings indicated panhypopituitarism. In addition to neuroimaging and past medical history, SS was diagnosed and treatment started. We emphasize the importance of thorough investigation, further diagnosis and management of this condition (especially in third world countries), since SS is a neurological and endocrinological emergency and potentially life threatening.

Social Media and the Impact on Alcohol Consumption: A Study among Academics from a Public University in a Western Amazon City, Porto Velho, Brazil

This is a descriptive study of quantitative approach, developed at the Federal University of Rond?nia located in the Western Amazon. With the aim of analyzing the frequency of visualization of alcoholic content in the Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, patterns of consumption, reasons that lead them to drink, most used social network and to correlate how often the users are exposed to alcoholic publications, determining if there was an important link between individual drinking practice during the beginning period and six months later. The information was obtained through the application of questionnaires for incoming students of the freshmen semester, in two moments: a period from August to December 2016/2, and, asking the same students again, from March to June 2017/1. 52.8% were males in 2016/2 and 57, 9% of females in 2017/1 with age ranging between 18 and 20 years in both periods. Facebook has proven to be the most used platform among college students. In 2016/2, 63.9% reported seeing alcohol content at Facebook and consuming that substance, comparing to Instagram with 70.4%, and to Snapchat with 74.1%. In 2017/2, academics reporting viewing alcoholic content on Facebook and consuming those alcoholic beverages accounted for 65.8%, compared to Instagram, 74.1% and Snapchat 74.4%. “Celebrating a special occasion with friends” is the most cited reason of why claim to consume alcohol. Therelation between exposure to the alcohol content of the virtual media and the network of friends was found imperceptible to the majority of the students, as they mostly do not consider themselves exposed. Many university students start the graduation already consuming alcoholic substances, which explains why there is no significant change in alcohol consumption between the observed moments, although it was found a relationship between the visualization of alcohol content in social networks and consumption, with greater impact on Snapchat.

Gold has been present throughout the history of mankind and used to make jewelry and coins, and recently, acquired several industrial uses. The price of gold in international market had a significant increasing, surpassing 100% in the last five years. Thereby, deposits with low levels of gold content, gold with complex associations or in a very fine particle size became exploitable again, allowing new projects and expansion of existing ones. However, for maximum process efficiency is indispensable a deep knowledge of the characteristics of these minerals and their behavior in face of beneficiation processes. Consequently, an accurate routine for mineralogical and technological characterization is essential.

River Network and the Risk of Flooding for the Railway and Subway Systems in the City of Sao Paulo, Brazil

This study investigated the risk of flooding along the Sao Paulo city＇s railway network and showed its latest technologies. To that end, we took into account topographic and hydrological features, as well as possible interferences of the flooding phenomenon with the optimal operation of the railway system. When preparing the maps and the flooding risk analysis, we used data from project SRTM （Shuttle Radar Topography Mission） integrated and processed in a GIS （geographical information system）, through version 2.14 of the geoprocessing software ＂QGis＂. Results showed risk exposure for logistics operations of the railway system for the transportation of passengers, especially in the Central and Eastern regions of the city, where there is a higher concentration of points of flooding, thus making it more difficult for passengers to come and go in the greatest city of Brazil.

A case report:Bilateral atraumatic proximal tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis

Introduction: Proximal tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis is a rare disease most commonly occurring in the presence of either systemic inflammatory conditions or severe knee osteoarthritis. Case Presentation: The authors present a case report of isolated bilateral tibiofibular arthrosis in an otherwise healthy 28-year-old female patient. The patient presented with complaints of lateral knee pain. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed bilateral tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis. Trauma, repetitive use injury, and rheumatologic causes were excluded. The patient’s pain was initially managed conservatively, but she subsequently underwent tibiofibular arthrodesis for progressive pain symptoms. We review in this report the current literature on tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis and its treatment. Conclusion: Isolated tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis is a rare condition that may progress and requires surgical treatment to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.

Prevalence of Methicillin-Resistant <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i>in Raw Hamburgers and Ready-to-Eat Sandwiches Commercialized in Supermarkets and Fast Food Outlets in Brazil

Although well known, Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that remains widely studied because of its high pathogenic potential and its ability to develop resistance to antibiotics routinely used in clinical practice. The present study investigated the occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hamburgers and sandwiches sold in supermarkets and fast food outlets in Salvador, BA, Brazil. Fifty samples of frozen raw hamburgers (25: beef and 25: chicken) and 50 samples of ready-to-eat sandwiches (25: beef and 25: chicken) were collected and investigated for the presence of MRSA. MRSA was present in 32% of the hamburgers and 8% of the sandwiches. The frequency of MRSA was higher in the samples containing chicken meat. However, the statistical analysis showed no association between MRSA presence and the type of meat investigated (P > 0.05). The high prevalence of MRSA in hamburgers and the presence of the microorganism in ready-to-eat sandwiches are worrying and indicate the need for better control during food preparation to prevent the spread of bacteria.
