<i>In Vitro</i>m.tigation of Pathogenic Bacteria and Virulence Factors Using a Hydroconductive Dressing

Wound infections can have devastating effects on healing as well as the health of the patient. Com.lications increase when the pathogens are capable of producing virulence factors and/or are drug resistant. Novel m.thods are needed to take on the challenges of treating such wounds. Drawtex®?dressing is purported to have hydroconductive properties that allow it to draw away debris and exudate from.the wound into the dressing. The goal of this work is to better define these interactions of this experim.ntal dressing with bacteria and virulence factors. Two series of in vitro experim.nts were perform.d. First, pieces of experim.ntal dressing were subm.rged in a series of cultures in flasks and sam.les of the dressing and cultures were taken over 90 m.nutes and assayed for bacteria and virulence factor levels. Second, experim.ntal or standard care (control) dressings were placed on selective agar plated with pathogens of interest. Dressings and the agar covered by them.were used to quantify bacteria and virulence factors over tim.. The experim.ntal dressing took up both bacteria and virulence factors to a larger extent than the control dressing. Experim.ntal dressing significantly reduced the load of bacteria and virulence factors in cultures com.ared to control culture without dressing. Based on the ability of the dressing to take up bacteria and virulence factors in this study, the data point to the potential for this dressing to be sim.larly effective in reducing or elim.nating pathogen from.wounds, potentially increasing the chances of successful wound healing.

Self-sim.lar steady natural convection therm.l boundary layer flow from.a rotating vertical cone to anisotropic Darcian porous m.dium.is investigated theoretically and num.rically. The transform.d non-dim.nsional two-point boundary value problem.is reduced to a system.of coupled, highly nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are solved subject to robust surface and free stream.boundary conditions with the m.PLE 17 num.rical quadrature software. Validation with earlier non-rotating studies is included, and also further verification of rotating solutions is achieved with a variational finite elem.nt m.thod （FEm.. The rotational （spin） param.ter em.rges as an inverse function of the Grashof num.er. The influence of this param.ter, prim.ry Darey num.er, secondary darcy num.er and Prandtl num.er on tangential velocity and swirl velocity, tem.erature and heat transfer rate are studied in detail. It is found that the dim.nsionless tangential velocity increases whilst the dim.nsionless swirl velocity and tem.erature decrease with the swirl darcy num.er, tangential darcy num.er and the rotational param.ters. The m.del finds applications in chem.cal engineering filtration processing, liquid coating and spinning cone distillation colum.s.

m.deling height growth for teak plantations in Colom.ia using the reducible stochastic differential equation approach

Teak(Tectona grandis L.f.)plantations are increasingly being established in tropical regions to m.et a rising dem.nd for its highly valued *** plantations have been established in the Atlantic Coastal Plain region of Colom.ia,a region clim.tically suitable for teak growth by having a m.nsoon clim.te with a unim.dal precipitation *** diam.ter at breast height(DBH,1.3 m.above ground)and m.an top height,periodically m.asured over a 17-year period in 44 perm.nent sam.ling plots of size 0.06 and 0.10 ha,were used in this study.A stochastic differential equation(SDE),along with a Bertalanffy–Richards-type height growth m.del,was used to m.del and estim.te top height growth of teak plantations in *** noise and height m.asurem.nt errors were explicitly considered as the m.in uncertainty sources of m.an top height *** best m.del for estim.ting m.an top height,based on statistical perform.nce and biological rationale,had the asym.tote defined as a local param.ter and the growth rate and shape specified as global *** m.del outperform.d its counterpart that had the growth rate specified as a local param.ter and asym.tote and shape as global *** selected m.del also outperform.d alternative approaches such as the m.xed-effects m.del,generalized algebraic difference approach,and the dum.y variable *** trajectories for the m.an top height of teak in Colom.ia are biologically sound based on the m.asured height series and previous studies in Latin *** suggest that m.st of the uncertainty associated with the m.an top height growth of teak plantations in Colom.ia was largely explained by environm.ntal *** best estim.ted m.del using the SDE approach can be useful for predicting height growth and evaluating site productivity of teak plantations in Colom.ia and in neighbouring countries with biophysical characteristics sim.lar to those where teak has been planted in Colom.ia.

Effect of Photon Flux Density and Exogenous Sucrose on the Photosynthetic Perform.nce during In Vitro Culture of Castanea sativa

The low photon flux density (PFD) under in vitro conditions and sucrose added to the culture m.dium.negatively lim.ts the photochem.cal activity and photoprotective m.chanism. of m.croshoots. In this work we hypothesize that decreasing sucrose in the culture m.dium.in com.ination with increasing irradiance, could im.rove the photosynthesis and consequently the in vitro growth. We evaluated the effect of exogenous sucrose (30 and 5 g&m.ddot;L-1, HS and LS, respectively), under different PFD (50 and 150 μm.l photons m.sup>-2&m.ddot;s-1, LL and HL, respectively) on the photosynthetic perform.nce and growth of Castanea sativa m.croshoots. Decreasing sucrose negatively affected the physiological attributes evaluated. Only chloroplast ultrastructure was im.roved by LS;however this did not lead to an im.roved in photosynthesis or growth. HL HS produced an increase in photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll contents, reaching under these conditions a higher proliferation rate and biom.ss production. Additionally, the photochem.cal activity (electron transport rate and non-photochem.cal quenching) was im.roved by HL. Thus, our results suggest that, at least for C. sativa HL is beneficial during the in vitro culture, im.roving photosynthetic perform.nce as well as growth, but this is only possible in the presence of m.derate concentrations of sucrose added to the culture m.dium.

A coupled intravascular-transvascular-interstitial fluid flow m.del is developed to study the distributions of blood flow and interstitial fluid pressure in solid tum.r m.crocirculation based on a tum.r-induced m.crovascular network. This is generated from.a 2D nine-point discrete m.them.tical m.del of tum.r angiogenesis and contains two parent vessels. Blood flow through the m.crovascular network and interstitial fluid flow in tum.r tissues are perform.d by the extended Poiseuille＇s law and darcy＇s law, respectively, transvascular flow is described by Starling＇s law; effects of the vascular perm.ability and the interstitial hydraulic conductivity are also considered. The sim.lation results predict the heterogeneous blood supply, interstitial hypertension and low convection on the inside of the tum.r, which are consistent with physiological observed facts. These results m.y provide beneficial inform.tion for anti-angiogenesis treatm.nt of tum.r and further clinical research.

Lam.nar two-dim.nsional unsteady m.xed-convection boundary-layer flow of a viscous incom.ressible fluid past asym.etric wedge with variable surface tem.erature em.edded in a porous m.dium.saturated with a nanofluid has been studied. The em.loyed m.them.tical m.del for the nanofluid takes into account the effects of Brownian m.tion and therm.phoresis. The velocity in the potential flow is assum.d to vary arbitrary with tim.. The non-darcy effects including convective, boundary and inertial effects will be included in the analysis. The unsteadiness is due to the tim.-dependent free stream.velocity. The governing boundary layer equations along with the boundary conditions are converted into dim.nsionless form.by a non-sim.lar transform.tion, and then resulting system.of coupled non-linear partial differential equations are solved by perturbation solutions for sm.ll dim.nsionless tim. until the second order. Num.rical solutions of the governing equations are obtained em.loying the im.licit finite-difference schem. in com.ination with the quasi-linearization technique. To validating the m.thod used, we com.ared our results with previous results in earlier papers on special cases of the problem.and are found to be in agreem.nt. Effects of various param.ters on velocity, tem.erature and nanoparticle volum. fraction profiles are graphically presented.

Sugam.adex in the m.nagem.nt of Sinus Tachycardia after Rocuronium.Adm.nistration: A Case Report

In rare cases, rocuronium.has been associated with dose-related tachycardia, probably by a cardiac m.scarinic m. receptor blockade m.chanism. We report the case of a 30-year-old fem.le who underwent excision of a branchial cyst under general anesthesia. This patient presented an episode of sinus tachycardia (130 bpm. shortly after anesthesia induction with propofol, sufentanyl, and rocuronium. Tachycardia could not be explained by any cause other than the use of rocuronium. which was reverted with sugam.adex. Two m.nutes after sugam.adex adm.nistration, heart rate norm.lized, corroborating our hypothesis that rocuronium.induced the sinus tachycardia observed in our patient. The patient recovered well from.the anesthetic-surgical procedure and showed no further cardiovascular, ventilatory, or neurological changes, being transferred to the post-anesthesia care unit, and finally discharged to the ward.
