An examination of the population dynamics of syngnathid fishes within Tampa Bay,Florida,USA

Seagrass ecosystems worldwide have been declining, leading to a decrease in associated fish populations, especially those with low mobility such as syngnathids （pipefish and seahorses）. This two-year pilot study investigated seasonal patterns in density, growth, site fidelity, and population dynamics of Tampa Bay （Fl） syngnathid fishes at a site adjacent to two marinas under construction. Using a modified mark-recapture technique, fish were collected periodically from three closely located sites that varied in seagrass species （Thalassia spp., Syringodium spp., and mixed-grass sites） and their distance from open water, but had consistent physical/chemical environmental characteristics. Fish were marked, photographed for body size and gender measurements, and released the same day at the capture site. Of the 5695 individuals surveyed, 49 individuals were recaptured, indicating a large, flexible population. Population density peaks were observed in July of both years, with low densities in late winter and late summer. Spatially, syngnathid densities were highest closest to the mouth of the bay and lowest near the shoreline. Seven species of syngnathid fishes were observed, and species-specific patterns of seagrass use emerged during the study. However, only two species, Syngnathus scovelli and Hippoeampus zosterae, were observed at high frequencies. For these two species, body size decreased across the study period, but while S. scovelli＇s population density decreased, H. zosterae＇s increased. Across six of the seven species, population size declined over the course of this preliminary study; however, seasonal shifts were impossible to distinguish from potential anthropogenic effects of construction [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 118-133, 2010].

Development of a protocol for frost-tolerance evaluation in rapeseed/canola(Brassica napus l.)

Spring frost can severely damage or even kill rapeseed/canola(Brassica napus l.) seedlings. A protocol for large scale screening of rapeseed germplasm under frost-simulating conditions has not yet been developed. Accordingly, the present study was conducted to develop a protocol for screening rapeseed germplasm under artificial frost-simulation conditions in a plant growth chamber and in a greenhouse. Nine rapeseed varieties, including three commercial hybrids, three spring types, and three winter types were used. Cold acclimation at 4 °C was applied for 0, 7, or 14 days to two-week old seedlings. The seedlings were treated with four freezing temperatures(- 4 °C,- 8 °C,- 12 °C, and- 16 °C). The length of the freezing period was 16 h, including the ramping of temperature down from 4 °C and up from the respective freezing temperature to 4 °C. Plants were allowed to recover at 4 °C for24 h before they were moved back to the greenhouse. Frost damage was scored on a 0–5scale, where 0 denotes completely dead and 5 denotes no damage. Seedling survival from the freezing treatment increased from the non-acclimation to the cold acclimation treatment. However, no significant differences(P limation. Frost treatment at- 4 °C resulted in significant differences in seedling damage relative to the other three temperatures, with the- 16 °C treatment resulting in the highest overall seedling damage. Significant differences were found between the spring type and the other two types(hybrid and winter). However, no significant differences were found between the hybrid and winter types. The suggested protocol for the assessment of frost tolerance is acclimation of two-week old seedlings for7 days at 4 °C followed by frost treatment at- 4 °C for 16 h.

Muscle energy technique for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease:A feasibility study

Objective:This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of implementing a manual therapy technique(muscle energy technique,MET)protocol in a hospital pulmonary rehabilitation(PR)program for patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).Methods:Participants aged 40 years and over,with moderate to severe COPD,were recruited into this 12-week *** primary outcome measures were feasibility(acceptability of the intervention and attendance/adherence to the trial)and safety(adverse events,AEs).All participants received the MET and PR *** and assessors were ***-standardized MET was delivered on 6 occasions(a maximum of once per week)at the hospital directly before a PR *** undertook PR sessions as per the hospital program at a frequency of two days per week for 8 *** were contacted 4 weeks after their final MET treatment via a telephone call to assess acceptability of the ***:Thirty-three participants were enrolled,with a median age of 74 years(range 45-89 years).The median number of MET sessions that participants attended was 5(range O-6)out of a possible 6 sessions(83%attendance).At follow-up,participants overwhelmingly enjoyed the MET treatment with some subjectively reporting improved *** were no major AEs related to the intervention,with the majority of AEs classified as expected events related to COPD ***:It is feasible to implement a manual therapy protocol using MET as an adjunct to PR in a hospital *** rates were satisfactory and there were no AEs related to the MET component of the intervention.

Unlike nucleation and growth in simple precipitation processes, described by the classical theory, metal nanoparticles formed in organic solvents with capping ligands often involve chemical reactions that occur homogeneously in solution or heterogeneously on the metal surface. These chemical reactions lead to the formation of intermediates that occurs in the process of deposition onto nuclei during the reduction. The understanding of these chemical reactions would enable a better design of functional metal nanocrystals, even those with unconventional hierarchical morphologies. In this study, we report the formation of dish-shaped nanostructures of palladium （Pd） obtained from palladium acetylacetonate （Pd（acac）2） in the presence of oleylamine and oleic acid. The process was correlated with the kinetic-controlled evolution of two-dimensional （2D） Pd nanosheets. The formation of Pd-ligand complexes was revealed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. These intermediates affected the formation kinetics of the 2D nanostructures and higher-ordered morphology of the nanodishes.

Immunohistochemical study of the digestive tract of Oligosarcus hepsetus

AIM: To describe the histology of the digestive tract and to investigate the occurrence of endocrine cells in Oligosarcus hepsetus (O. hepsetus ). METHODS: The digestive tract (DT) of O. hepsetus was divided into esophagus, two stomach regions (glandular and non-glandular) and two intestinal regions (anterior and posterior). These specimens were processed by routine histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Gomori's trichrome, periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and Alcian blue (AB). An immunohistochemical method using avidin-biotin-peroxidase was ***: The esophagus is lined with a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium that is reactive to PAS and AB. The stomach has a mucosa lined with a simple columnar epithelium with mucus-secreting cells that are reactive only to PAS. The intestine has a simple columnar epithelium with a brush border and goblet cells that are reactive to PAS and AB. Somatostatin, serotonin and cholecystokinin immunoreactive cells were identified throughout the ***: This study revealed adaptations for the species' diet and showed that the distribution and relative frequency of immunoreactive cells are similar to those of other fish.

Cortical and spinal evoked potential response to electrical stimulation in human rectum

AIM: To study a novel technique to record spinal and cortical evoked potentials (EPs) simultaneously in response to electrical stimulation in the human rectum. METHODS: Eight male and nine female healthy volunteers participated. Stimulating electrodes were attached to the rectal mucosa at 15 cm and 12 cm above the dentate line. Recording skin electrodes were positioned over vertebrae l4 through S2. The electrical stimulus was a square wave of 0.2 ms duration and the intensity of the stimulus varied between 0 and 100 mA. EP responses were recorded using a Nicolet Viking IV programmable signal ***: Simultaneous recording of cortical and spinal EPs was obtained in > 80% of the trials. The EP responses increased with the intensity of the electrical stimulation, were reproducible overtime, and were blocked by application of lidocaine jelly at the site of stimulation. The morphology (N1/P1), mean ± SD for latency (spinal N1, 4.6 ± 0.4 ms; P1, 6.8 ± 0.5 ms; cortical N1, 136.1 ± 4.2 ms; P1, 233.6 ± 12.8 ms) and amplitude (N1/P1, spinal, 38 ± 7 μV; cortical 19 ± 3 μV) data for the EP responses were consistent with those in the published literature. Reliable and reproducible EP recordings were obtained with the attachment of the electrodes to the rectal mucosa at predetermined locations between 16 and 8 cm above the anal verge, and the distance between the attachment sites of the electrodes (the optimal distance being approximately 3.0 cm between the two electrodes). CONClUSION: This technique can be used to assess potential abnormalities in primary afferent neural pathways innervating the rectum in several neurodegenerative and functional pain disorders.

Advances in targeted nanotherapeutics： From bioconjugation to biomimicry

Since the emergence of cancer nanomedicine, researchers have had intense interest in developing nanoparticles （NPs） that can specifically target diseased sites while avoiding healthy tissue to mitigate the off-target effects seen with conventional treatments like chemotherapy. Initial endeavors focused on the bioconjugation of targeting agents to NPs, and more recently, researchers have begun to develop biomimetic NP platforms that can avoid immune recognition to maximally accumulate in tumors. In this review, we describe the advantages and limitations of each of these targeting strategies. First, we review developments in bioconjugation strategies, where NPs are coated with biomolecules such as antibodies, aptamers, peptides, and small molecules to enable cell-specific binding. While bioconjugated NPs offer many exciting features and have improved pharmacokinetics and biodistribution relative to unmodified NPs, they are still recognized by the body as ＂foreign＂, resulting in their clearance by the mononuclear phagocytic system （MPS）. To overcome this limitation, researchers have recently begun to investigate biomimetic approaches that can hide NPs from immune recognition and reduce clearance by the MPS. These biomimetic NPs fall into two distinct categories： synthetic NPs that present naturally occurring structures, and NPs that are completely disguised by natural structures. Overall bioconjugated and biomimetic NPs have substantial potential to improve upon conventional treatments by reducing off-target effects through site-specific delivery. and they show great promise for future standards of care. Here, we provide a summary of each strategy, discuss considerations for their design moving forward, and highlight their potential clinical impact on cancer therapy.

Considerations when using the activPAl monitor in field-based research with adult populations

Research indicates that high levels of sedentary behavior(sitting or lying with low energy expenditure) are adversely associated with health. A key factor in improving our understanding of the impact of sedentary behavior(and patterns of sedentary time accumulation) on health is the use of objective measurement tools that collect date and time-stamped activity information. One such tool is the activP Al monitor. This thigh-worn device uses accelerometer-derived information about thigh position to determine the start and end of each period spent sitting/lying, standing, and stepping, as well as stepping speed, step counts, and postural transitions. The activP Al is increasingly being used within field-based research for its ability to measure sitting/lying via posture. We summarise key issues to consider when using the activP Al in physical activity and sedentary behavior field-based research with adult populations. It is intended that the findings and discussion points be informative for researchers who are currently using activP Al monitors or are intending to use them. Pre-data collection decisions, monitor preparation and distribution, data collection considerations, and manual and automated data processing possibilities are presented using examples from current literature and experiences from 2 research groups from the UK and Australia.
