Performance Assessment of Low-Temperature A-CAES(Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage)Plants

The widespread diffusion of renewable energy sources calls for the development of high-capacity energy storage systems as the A-CAES(Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage)*** this framework,low temperature(100℃–200℃)A-CAES(LT-ACAES)systems can assume a key role,avoiding some critical issues connected to the operation of high temperature *** this paper,two different LT-ACAES configurations are *** two configurations are characterized by the same turbomachines and compressed air storage section,while differ in the TES section and its integration with the *** particular,the first configuration includes two separated cycles:the working fluid(air)cycle and the heat transfer fluid(HTF)*** heat exchangers connect the two cycles allowing to recover thermal energy from the compressors and to heat the compressed air at the turbine *** different HTFs were considered:air(case A)and thermal oil(case B).The second configuration is composed of only one cycle,where the operating fluid and the HTF are the same(air)and the TES section is composed of three different packed-bed thermal storage tanks(case C).The tanks directly recover the heat from the compressors and heat the air at each turbine inlet,avoiding the use of heat *** LT-ACAES systems were modelled and simulated using the ASPEn-Plus and the mATLAB-Simulink *** main aim of this study was the detailed analysis of the reciprocal influence between the turbomachinery and the TES system;furthermore,the performance evaluation of each plant was carried out assuming both on-design and off-design operating ***,the different configurations were compared through the main performance parameters,such as the round-trip efficiency.A total power output of around 10 mW was set,leading to a TES tank volume ranging between 500 and 700 m^(3).The second configuration with three TES systems appears to be the most promising in terms of round-trip efficiency

Discrete dislocation plasticity(DDP)calculations are carried out to investigate the response of a single crystal contacted by a rigid sinusoidal asperity under sliding loading conditions to look for causes of microstructure change in the dislocation *** mechanistic driver is identified as the development of lattice rotations and stored energy in the subsurface,which can be quantitatively correlated to recent tribological experimental *** of surface slip initiation and substrate permanent deformation obtained from DDP calculations for varying contact size and normal load suggest ways of optimally tailoring the interface and microstructural material properties for various frictional loads.

A controlled transition between two different ion acceleration mechanisms would pave the way to achieving different ion energies and spectral features within the same experimental set up,depending on the region of *** on numerical simulations conducted over a wide range of experimentally achievable parameter space,reported here is a comprehensive investigation of the different facets of ion acceleration by relativistically intense circularly polarized laser pulses interacting with thin near-critical-density plasma *** results show that the plasma thickness,exponential density gradient,and laser frequency chirp can be controlled to switch the interaction from the transparent operating regime to the opaque one,thereby enabling the choice of a maxwellian-like ion energy distribution with a cutoff energy in the relativistically transparent regime or a quasi-monoenergetic spectrum in the opaque ***,it is established that a multispecies target configuration can be used effectively for optimal generation of quasi-monoenergetic ion bunches of a desired ***,the feasibility is demonstrated for generating monoenergetic proton beams with energy peak atℰ≈20–40 meV and a narrow energy spread ofΔℰ/ℰ≈18%–28.6%confined within a divergence angle of∼175 mrad at a reasonable laser peak intensity of I0≃5.4×10^(20)W/cm^(2).

Background Lower exercise tolerance is an important component of asthma and the possible effects of non-invasive ven-tilation on exercise capacity in individuals with severe therapy-resistant asthma(STRA)are *** study aimed to evaluate the immediate effect of continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP)on exercise tolerance in children with *** We performed a controlled,randomized,crossover clinical trial including subjects aged 6 to 18 years old diagnosed with ***,anthropometric and lung function data were *** participants in the intervention group(IG)used CPAP(PEEP 10cmH2O and FiO20.21)for a period of 40 *** in the control group(CG)used CPAP with mini-mum PEEP at 1 cmH20 also for 40 ***,subjects from both groups underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET).After a 15-day washout period,on a subsequent visit,subjects participated in the opposite group to the initial *** Thirteen subjects with a mean age of 12.30±1.7 years were *** variables of peak expiratory flow(PEF)and forced expiratory volume in the first second(FEV1)before using CPAP and after performing CPET did not show sig-nificant *** CPET results,there was no significant difference(P=0.59)between groups at peak exercise for oxygen consumption—VO2(CG:33.4±6.3 and IG:34.5±5.9,mL kg^(-1)min^(-1)).However,the IG(12.4±2.1)presented a total test time(min)significantly(P=0.01)longer than the CG(11.5±1.3).Conclusion The results suggest that the use of CPAP before physical exercise increases exercise duration in children and adolescents with STRA.

nickel(Ⅱ)complexes with pyrazole-based ligands are widely employed in catalysis of ethylene oligomerization and subsequent Friedel-Crafts alkylation of *** have prepared ten new nickel(Ⅱ)dibromide complexes with various substituted bis(azolyl)*** have been characterized using^(1)H nmR,IR,high resolution mass spectrometry and elemental *** structures of three complexes have been unambiguously established using X-ray *** was found that these complexes in the presence of Et2AlCl or Et_(3)Al_(2)Cl_(3)are active both in ethylene oligomerization and Friedel-Crafts alkylation processes(activity up to 3720 kgoligomer·mol[ni]^(−1)·h^(−1)).The use of Et_(3)Al_(2)Cl_(3)results in a higher share of alkylated products(up to 60%).moreover,catalytic systems activated with Et_(3)Al_(2)Cl_(3)produced small amounts of odd carbon number olefins(up to 0.8%).The Friedel-Crafts alkylation was used as a trap for previously undetected short-chain odd carbon number olefins(C_(3)and C_(5)).

Drawing insights from pion parton distributions

A symmetry-preserving continuum approach to the two valence-body bound-state problem is used to calculate the valence, glue and sea distributions within the pion; unifying them with, inter alia, electromagnetic pion elastic and transition form factors. The analysis reveals the following momentum fractions at the scale ζ2:= 2GeV :〈xvalence〉 = 0.48（3）, 〈xglue〉 = 0.41（2）, 〈xsea〉 = 0.11（2）;and despite hardening induced by the emergent phenomenon of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, the valence-quark distribution function, qπ（x）, exhibits the x ≈ 1 behaviour predicted by quantum chromodynamics（QCD）. After evolution to o ζ = 5.2 GeV, the prediction for qπ（x） matches that obtained using lattice-regularised QCD. This confluence should both stimulate improved analyses of existing data and aid in planning efforts to obtain new data on the pion distribution functions.

The Ceneri Base Tunnel＂ Construction Experience with the Southern Portion of the Flat Railway Line Crossing the Swiss Alps

This paper summarizes the experience that was gained during the construction of the 15.4 km long Ceneri Base Tunnel （CBT）, which is the southern part of the fiat railway line crossing the Swiss Alps from north to south. The project consisted of a twin tube with a diameter of 9 m interconnected by cross- passages, each 325 m long. In the middle of the alignment and at its southern end, large caverns were excavated for logistical and operational requirements. The total excavation length amounted to approx- imately 40 km. The tunnel crossed Alpine rock formations comprising a variety of rock typologies and several fault zones. The maximum overburden amounted to 850 m. The excavation of the main tunnels and of the cross-passages was executed by means of drill-and-blast （D＆B） excavation. The support con- sisted of bolts, meshes, fiber-reinforced shotcrete and, when required, steel ribs. A gripper tunnel boring machine （TBm） was used in order to excavate the access tunnel. The high overburden caused squeezing rock conditions, which are characterized by large anisotropic convergences when crossing weaker rock formations. The latter required the installation of a deformable support. At the north portal, the tunnel （with an enlarged cross-section） passed underneath the A2 Swiss highway （the major road axis connect- ing the north and south of Switzerland） at a small overburden and through soft ground. Vertical and sub- horizontal jet grouting in combination with partial-face excavation was successfully implemented in order to limit the surface settlements. The south portal was located in a dense urban area. The excavation from the south portal included an approximately 220 m long cut-and-cover tunnel, followed by about 300 m of D＆B excavation in a bad rock formation. The very low overburden, poor rock quality, and demanding crossing with an existing road tunnel （at a vertical distance of only 4 m） required special excavation methods through reduced sectors and special blastin

Computational 4D imaging of light-in-flight with relativistic effects

Light-in-flight imaging enables the visualization and characterization of light propagation,which provides essential information for the study of the fundamental phenomena of light.A camera images an object by sensing the light emitted or reflected from it,and interestingly,when a light pulse itself is to be imaged,the relativistic effects,caused by the fact that the distance a pulse travels between consecutive frames is of the same scale as the distance that scattered photons travel from the pulse to the camera,must be accounted for to acquire accurate space–time information of the light ***,we propose a computational light-in-flight imaging scheme that records the projection of light-in-flight on a transverse x-y plane using a single-photon avalanche diode camera,calculates z and t information of light-in-flight via an optical model,and therefore reconstructs its accurate(x,y,z,t)four-dimensional *** proposed scheme compensates the temporal distortion in the recorded arrival time to retrieve the accurate time of a light pulse,with respect to its corresponding spatial location,without performing any extra *** light-in-flight imaging in a threedimensional space of 375 mm×75 mm×50 mm is performed,showing that the position error is 1.75 mm,and the time error is 3.84 ps despite the fact that the camera time resolution is 55 ps,demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed *** work provides a method to expand the recording and measuring of repeatable transient events with extremely weak scattering to four dimensions and can be applied to the observation of optical phenomena with ps temporal resolution.

Analysis of Chaotic Dynamics in a Two-Dimensional Sine Square map

We study an n-dimensional system based upon a sine map, which is related to the simplified model of an opto-electronic system. The system behavior is analyzed with the tools of nonlinear dynamics （bifurcations in the parameter plane, critical manifolds, basins of attraction, chaotic attractors）. Our study relies on a two-dimensional system （n=2）. It is interesting that this system shows the existence of bounded chaotic orbits, which can be considered for secure transmissions.
