Comprehensive studies identify motor neuron spectrum disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)as globally rising fatal disorders with the highest prevalence in aging populations,influenced by ethnicity and ancestry(GBD 2016 Motor Neuron Disease Colla borators,2018).While~10% of diagnoses involve a family history(fALS),most cases are considered sporadic(sALS).However,population-based studies suggest that even cases without a common index mutation impart heritability(Ryan et al.,2019),indicating a crucial role of rare and as yet unknown genetic denominators.

Knowledge and awareness of glaucoma in Mexican patients with and without glaucoma diagnosis in an Ophthalmology Referral Center

AIM: To assess and compare knowledge and awareness of glaucoma in subjects with and without glaucoma diagnosis attending an Ophthalmology Referral ***: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Asociación Para Evitar la Ceguera in Mexico City, using a questionnaire formulated by a group of experts following the Delphi panel rules, and pre-tested in a pilot *** questionnaire was applied and compared between:glaucoma patients, relatives of glaucoma patients and patients without glaucoma. Socio-demographic data was collected to assess correlation with the level of knowledge using Logistic regression models, estimating the odds ratios(OR), 95% confidence intervals, and P<***: Three hundred and ninety-four subjects were enrolled;with a median age of 61y. One hundred and thirty-four(34%) were patients with glaucoma, 152(38.6%)patients without glaucoma, and 108(27.4%) relatives of patients with glaucoma. Two hundred and ninety-one(73.9%) participants were aware of the term “glaucoma”.Regarding knowledge 46.7% had moderate knowledge,37.8% had poor knowledge, and 15.5% good ***, relatives of glaucoma patients had the highest scores, and patients without glaucoma got the lowest scores. A positive correlation was found between better knowledge and frequent ophthalmological examinations OR 2.24(P=0.02), higher education level OR 4.17(P=0.00) and having a family member with glaucoma OR 3.28(P=0.00).CONCLUSION: Awareness and knowledge of glaucoma in subjects attending an Ophthalmology Referral Center is predominantly moderate or poor. This has important implications regarding attitudes that can result in lack of follow up in ophthalmological care.

Nano-confinement of biomolecules： Hydrophilic confinement promotes structural order and enhances mobility of water molecules

Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the confinement packing characteristics of small hydrophilic （N-acetyl-glycine-methylamide, Nagma） and hydrophobic （N-acetyl-leucine-methylamide, Nalma） biomolecules in large diameter single-wall carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs）. We find that hydrophilic biomolecules easily fill the nanotube and self organize into a geometrical configuration which reminds the water structural organization under SWCNT confinement. The packing of hydrophilic biomolecules inside the cylinder confines all water molecules in its core, which enhances their mobility. Conversely, hydrophobic biomolecules accommodate into the nanotubes with a trend for homogeneous filling, which generate unstable small pockets of water and drive toward a state of dehydration. These results shed light on key parameters important for the encapsulation of biomolecules with direct relevance for long-term storage and prevention of degradation.

Characterising populations living close to intensive farming and composting facilities in England

Bioaerosol exposure has been linked to adverse respiratory *** farming and composting facilities are important anthropogenic sources of *** aimed to characterise populations living close to intensive farming and composting *** also infer whether the public are becoming more concerned about anthropogenic bioaerosol emissions,using reports of air pollution related incidents attributed to *** mapped the location of 1,257 intensive farming and 310 composting facilities in England in relation to the resident population and its characteristics(sex and age),area characteristics(deprivation proxy and rural/urban classification)and school locations stratified by pre-defined distance bands from these bioaerosol *** also calculated the average number of air pollution related incidents per year per *** found that more than 16%of the population and 15%of schools are located within 4,828 m of an intensive farming facility or 4,000 m of a composting facility;few people(0.01%)live very close to these sites and tend to be older *** to composting facilities,populations are more likely to be urban and more *** number of incidents were attributed to a small proportion of facilities;population characteristics around these facilities were *** indicate that populations living near composting facilities(particularly>250 to≤4,000 m)are mostly located in ur6an areas(80188%of the population),which supports the need for more community health studies to be *** could also be used to inform risk management strategies at facilities with higher numbers of incidents.

Proteins are a class of biomaterials having a vast array of functions, including the catalysis of metabolic reactions, DNA replication, stimuli response and transportation of molecules. Recent progress in laser-based fabrication technologies has enabled the formation of three-dimensional （3D） proteinaceous micro- and nano-structures by femtosecond laser cross-linking, which has expanded the possible applications of proteins. This article reviews the current knowledge andrecent advancements in the femtosecond laser cross-linking of proteins. An overview of previous studies related to fabri-cation using a variety of proteins and detailed discussions of the associated mechanisms are provided. In addition, ad-vances and applications utilizing specific protein functions are introduced. This review thus provides a valuable summaryof the 3D micro- and nano-fabrication of proteins for biological and medical applications.
