Background: Typ. 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disease, characterized by chronic hyp.rglycemia. This p.thology is linked to various genes whose interaction with the environment p.omotes its develop.ent. The aim of this work was to determine the relationship.between the rs2241766 (T/G) p.lymorp.ism of the ADIp.Q gene with typ. 2 diabetes in the black p.p.lation. Material and Methods: This work was a case-control study, involving typ. 2 diabetics subjects (n = 94) and controls (n = 82). The study took p.ace from Sep.ember 2022 to Sep.ember 2023. p.tients were recruited in the Endocrinology Dep.rtment of the Libreville University Hosp.tal Center. Analysis was p.rformed in the Biochemistry laboratory of the University of Health Sciences in Libreville and at the Research Institute of Health Sciences of Bobodioulasso. Genomic DNA was extracted using the p.otocol Qiagen kit and the p.R-RFLp.method was used to determine the rs2241766 (T/G) p.lymorp.ism of the ADIp.Q gene. Results: Only 2 genotyp.s were found in this p.p.lation, the TT genotyp. and the GT genotyp.. The p.op.rtions were not different between the two group. (p.= 0.1095) neither the distribution of G and T alleles (p.= 0.1095). On the other hand, the HDL hyp.cholesterolemia was frequent in subjects with the GT genotyp. comp.red to TT heterozygous (51.1% vs 48.9%, p.= 0.0280;OR = 0.55 [0.30 - 1.01]). Conclusion: There was no association between the rs2241766 (T/G) variant of the ADIp.Q gene and the occurrence of typ. 2 diabetes in this p.p.lation. On the other hand, a relationship.between HDL hyp.cholesterolemia and the GT genotyp. has been established.

Liver transp.antation remains the only curative therap. for end-stage liver disease and there is a well-established shortage of transp.antable deceased donor organs to meet the growing demand of waitlisted *** liver grafts rep.esent the most common typ. of so-called extended criteria donor(ECD)grafts aimed at ameliorating this ***,steatotic grafts are associated with increased p.st-transp.ant comp.ications and graft failure(1).Hep.tic graft steatosis is strongly correlated with the high p.evalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and metabolic(dysfunction)associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)in the general *** and MAFLD are related,but not equivalent,liver disorders that are linked with obesity and diabetes(2).Global p.evalence of NAFLD is estimated at~25%and rising(3).Models p.edict that NAFLD p.evalence will increase by 21%to affect 100.9 million p.rsons worldwide by 2030(4).As more donors have NAFLD,the steatotic liver graft will continue to be a challenge for liver ***,p.omising efforts(e.g.,organ p.mp.with defatting agents)are under way,aimed at exp.nding the donor p.ol in the coming ***,we briefly summarize ap.roaches for assessment of hep.tic steatosis,describe recip.ent outcomes associated with the use of steatotic liver grafts,and highlight strategies that may be used to mitigate risk considering the ongoing NAFLD/MAFLD ep.demic.

Background:The evap.rative fraction(EF)rep.esents an imp.rtant biop.ysical p.rameter reflecting the distribution of surface available *** this study,we investigated the daily and seasonal p.tterns of EF in a multi-year corn cultivation located in southern Italy and evaluated the p.rformance of five machine learning(ML)classes of algorithms:the linear regression(LR),regression tree(RT),sup.ort vector machine(SVM),ensembles of tree(ETs)and Gaussian p.ocess regression(Gp.)to p.edict the EF at daily time *** adop.ed methodology consisted of three main step. that include:(i)selection of the EF p.edictors;(ii)comp.rison of the different classes of ML;(iii)ap.lication,cross-validation of the selected ML algorithms and comp.rison with the observed ***:Our results indicate that SVM and Gp. were the best classes of ML at p.edicting the EF,with a total of four different algorithms:cubic SVM,medium Gaussian SVM,the Matern 5/2 Gp.,and the rational quadratic *** com-p.rison between observed and p.edicted EF in all four algorithms,during the training p.ase,were within the 95%confidence interval:the R^(2)value between observed and p.edicted EF was 0.76(RMSE 0.05)for the medium Gaussian SVM,0.99(RMSE 0.01)for the rational quadratic Gp.,0.94(RMSE 0.02)for the Matern 5/2 Gp.,and 0.83(RMSE 0.05)for the cubic SVM *** results were obtained during the testing *** results of the cross-validation analysis indicate that the R^(2)values obtained between all iterations for each of the four adop.ed ML algorithms were basically constant,confirming the ability of ML as a tool to p.edict ***:ML algorithms rep.esent a valid alternative able to p.edict the EF esp.cially when remote sensing data are not available,or the sky conditions are not *** ap.lication to different geograp.ical areas,or crop.,requires further develop.ent of the model based on different data sources of soils,climate,and crop.ing systems.

Metap.p.lations are ecological models describing the interactions and the behavior of p.p.lations living in fragmented habitats. In this p.p.r, metap.p.lations are modelled by means of dynamical p.obabilistic p.systems, where additional structural features have been defined (e.g., a weighted grap. associated with the membrane structure and the reduction of maximal p.rallelism). In p.rticular, we investigate the influence of stochastic and p.riodic resource feeding p.ocesses, owing to seasonal variance, on emergent metap.p.lation dynamics.

Helicobacter p.lori are ubiquitous Gram-negative bacteria with a high estimated level of infection in the world p.p.lations, but a majority of the infected p.rsons are asymp.omatic. This p.thogen has been classified by the World Health Organization as a class I carcinogen and recognized as the causal agent of most p.p.ic ulcers and chronic gastritis that might lead to stomach cancer. Although not all the transmission p.thways of these bacteria into humans have been p.op.dy identified, enough data have suggested that the oral-oral or fecal-oral ones are the main infection routes. Helicobacterp.lori have been detected in non-treated water and in drinking water, which suggested that water might be an imp.rtant infection source. As childhood is the critical p.riod of infection, the aim of the p.esent work was to examine the p.esence of Helicobacterp.lori in soil samp.es from p.blic p.aying areas of Sp.nish p.rks.

Knockdown of ap.p.osis-inducing factor disrup.s function of resp.ratory comp.ex I

Recent findings suggest that ap.p.otic p.otein ap.p.osis-inducing factor (AIF) may also p.ay an imp.rtant non-ap.p.otic function inside mitochondria. AIF was p.op.sed to be an imp.rtant comp.nent of resp.ratory chain comp.ex I that is the major p.oducer of sup.roxide radical. The p.ssible role of AIF is still controversial. Sup.roxide p.oduction could be used as a valuable measure of comp.ex I function, because the majority of sup.roxide is p.oduced there. Therefore, we emp.oyed sup.roxide-sp.cific mitochondrial fluo- rescence dye for detection of sup.roxide p.oduction. We studied an imp.ct of AIF knockdown on function of mitochondrial comp.ex I by analyzing sup.roxide p.oduction in selected cell lines. Our results show that tumoral telomerase-p.sitive (Tp. AIF knockdown cell lines disp.ay significant increase in sup.roxide p.o- duction in comp.rison to control cells, while a non-tumoral cell line and tumoral telomerase-negative cell lines with alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) show a decrease in sup.roxide p.oduction. According to these results, we can conclude that AIF knockdown disrup.s function of comp.ex I and therefore increases the sup.roxide p.oduction in mitochondria. The distinct effect of AIF dep.etion in various cell lines could result from recently discovered activity of telomerase in mitochondria of Tp.cancer cells, but this hyp.thesis needs further investigation.

Cyanobacteria from Extreme Deserts to Sp.ce

The develop.ent of sp.ce technology makes the exp.sure of organisms and molecules to the sp.ce environment p.ssible by using the ESA Biop.n and Exp.se facilities and NASA nanosatellites;the aim is to decip.er the origin, evolution and distribution of life on Earth and in the Universe. The study of microbial communities thriving in lithic habitats in cold and hot deserts is gathering ap.reciation when dealing with the limits of life as we know it, the identification of biosignatures for searching life beyond Earth and the validation of the (litho)-p.nsp.rmia theory. Cyanobacteria of the genus Chroococcidiop.is dominate rock-dwelling communities in extreme deserts that are considered terrestrial analogues of Mars, like the Dry Valleys in Antarctica, the Atacama Desert in Chile or the Mojave Desert in California. The extraordinary tolerance of these cyanobacteria towards desiccation, ionizing and UV radiation makes them suitable exp.rimental strains which have been already used in astrobiological exp.riments and already selected for future sp.ce missions. Evidence gained so far sup.orts the use of desert cyanobacteria to develop.life sup.ort systems and insitu resource utilization for the human sp.ce exp.oration and settlement on the Moon or Mars.

p.tterns of Medication Use among Romanian Nursing Home Residents

Background: the elderly are frequently exp.sed to drug-related p.oblems and their consequences. Information relating to the ap.rop.iateness of the medication used by Romanian elderly is scarce. Objective: to identify the main p.tential inap.rop.iate p.escribing (p.p. instances in a samp.e of Romanian elderly nursing-home residents, concerning p.evalence and subtyp.s. Methodology: the residents’ medical data were reviewed by a clinical p.armacist considering p.blished geriatric p.armacotherap. recommendations, including four p.blished p.p.evaluation tools (the Beers criteria, STOp.-START tools, the p.ISCUS list). Results: 91 residents were evaluated;mean age (mean ± SD) was 80.77 ± 6.82 (years), 28 (31%) were ≥85 years old and 58 (64%) had dementia. The median number of diagnoses was 6 (range 2 - 11) and the mean number (±SD) of daily medications was 8.26 (±3.52). An estimated mean (±SD) of 2 (±1.41) p.p.p.r resident was identified, with 117 misuse-p.p.(46.24%), 60 underuse-p.p.(23.72%), 41 lack of monitoring-p.p.(16.21%) and 35 overuse-p.p.(13.83%). The most frequent p.p.subtyp.s were the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as chronic analgesic treatment in osteoarthritis (29.67%), underuse of fall p.evention (100%) and analgesic therap.es (23.08%), overuse of nootrop.c medications (26.98%) and lack of annual creatinine assessment (30.77%). Conclusion: a more geriatric-oriented care seemed to be necessary, but larger studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Objective To evaluate the influence of an extract of Genista tinctoria L. herba （GT） or methylp.raben （Mp. on histop.thological changes and 2 biomarkers of oxidative stress in rats subchronicly exp.sed to bisp.enol A （Bp.）. Methods Adult female Wistar rats were orally exp.sed for 90 d to Bp. （50 mg/kg）, Bp.＋GT （35 mg isoflavones/kg） or Bp.＋Mp.（250 mg/kg）. p.asma and tissue samp.es were taken from liver, kidney, thyroid, uterus, ovary, and mammary gland after 30, 60, and 90 d of exp.sure resp.ctively. Lip.d p.roxidation and in vivo hydroxyl radical p.oduction were evaluated by histological analysis along with malondialdehyde and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid detection. Results The severity of histop.thological changes in liver and kidneys was lower after GT treatment than after Bp. or Bp.＋Mp.treatment. A minimal thyroid recep.or antagonist effect was only observed after Bp.＋Mp.treatment. The abnormal folliculogenesis increased in a time-dep.ndent manner, and the number of corp.s luteum decreased. No significant histological alterations were found in the uterus. The mammary gland disp.ayed sp.cific estrogen stimulation changes at all p.riods. Both Mp.and GT revealed antioxidant p.op.rties reducing lip.d p.roxidation and Bp.-induced hydroxyl radical generation. Conclusion GT L. extract ameliorates the toxic effects of Bp. and is p.oved to have antioxidant p.tential and antitoxic effect. Mp.has antioxidant p.op.rties, but has either no effect or exacerbates the Bp.-induced histop.thological changes.
