Porous biomaterials which provide a structural and biological support for cells have immense potential in tissue engineering and cell-based therapies for tissue *** biomaterials that can host endothelial cells represent promising tools for the vascularization of engineered ***-dimensional collagen scaffolds possessing controlled architecture and mechanical stiffness are obtained through freeze–drying of collagen suspensions,followed by chemical cross-linking which maintains their ***,cross-linking scaffolds renders their biological activity suboptimal for many cell types,including human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVEcs),by inhibiting cell–collagen ***,we have improved crucial HUVEc interactions with such cross-linked collagen biomaterials by covalently coupling combinations of triple-helical peptides(THPs).These are ligands for collagen-binding cell-surface receptors(integrins or discoidin domain receptors)or secreted proteins(SPARc and von willebrand factor).THPs enhanced HUVEc adhesion,spreading and proliferation on 2D collagen *** grafted to 3D-cross-linked collagen scaffolds promoted cell survival over seven *** study demonstrates that THP-functionalized collagen scaffolds are promising candidates for hosting endothelial cells with potential for the production of vascularized engineered tissues in regenerative medicine applications.

Functionalization of Single- and Multi-walled carbon Nanotubes with cationic Amphiphiles for Plasmid DNA complexation and Transfection

The possibility of delivering DNA effi ciently to cells represents a crucial issue for the treatment of both genetic and acquired ***,even although the effi ciency of non-viral transfection systems has improved in the last decade,none have yet proven to be suffi ciently effective in *** report herein our results on the functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SwNT)and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MwNT)by two cationic amphiphiles(lipid RPR120535 and pyrenyl polyamine),their use for the complexation of plasmid DNA,and their efficiency in transfecting cells in *** experiments have shown that the efficiency of transfection is higher when using SwNT instead of MwNT,and that transfection effi ciency is similar or slightly higher when using nanoplexes(SwNT/lipid RPR120535/DNA)instead of lipoplexes(lipid RPR120535/DNA)and several orders of magnitude higher than that of naked *** study therefore shows both that the transfection is better when using SwNTs and that it is dependent on the nature of the amphiphilic molecules adsorbed on the nanotubes.

corn distillers dried grains with solubles(DDGS) is a co-product of the fuel ethanol industry that is an excellent source of energy, digestible amino acids, and digestible phosphorus. however, the antioxidant capacity and phytochemical content of DDGS and how it is influenced by production parameters is unknown. Therefore, 16 DDGS samples obtained from different ethanol production plants in the *** characterized for antioxidant capacity, vitamin E, xanthophylls, and ferulic acid content and compared with corn. The antioxidant capacity of DDGS samples, measured using the 2,2-diphenyl-lpicrylhydrazyl(DPPH) assay, varied almost 2 folds among samples, but in all cases was more than 3 times that of corn. All DDGS samples had a considerably greater concentration of tocopherols and tocotrienols(lipid-soluble antioxidants) than corn. however, the relative concentrations among the tocopherols and tocotrienols tended to be similar to corn. The xanthophyll lutein was present in all DDGS samples and in all cases exceeded the content in corn. Zeaxanthin was detected in most samples. The total ferulic acid content of the DDGS samples was almost 3-fold greater than corn, but, as in corn, almost all was present in a bound form. however, the concentration of unbound(free) ferulic acid was more than 3 times the concentration found in the corn sample. Thus, DDGS is a rich source of phytochemical compounds and may provide antioxidant and health benefits beyond its macronutrient composition. however, differences in processing can greatly influence the phytochemical content and quality of DDGS. In particular,thermal abuse due to excessive heat used in drying may lead to lipid oxidation products that may have deleterious effects when incorporated into feeds.

Networked rural electrification is an alternative approach to accelerate rural *** satellite photos and GIS tools,an electrical distribution network is used to connect villages and properly located generation facilities together to reduce electrification *** design the network,optimal paths connecting all node-pairs are identified,followed by finding a network topology that minimizes *** work has illustrated that A*(A-star,an optimal path-finding algorithm)is inefficient for this application due to the complex topography in rural *** multiplier-accelerated A*(MAA*)algorithm overcomes key performance issues,but,like A*,produces only one path connecting each *** on one path increases project risk because adverse conditions,such as inaccurate GIS estimation,unexpected soil conditions,land-rights disputes,political issues,*** occur during *** this paper,a hybrid path-finding method combining genetic algorithm and A*/MAA*algorithm is *** proposed method provides a family of near-optimal paths instead of a single optimal path for routing.A family of paths allows a project implementer to quickly adapt to unexpected situations as new information becomes available,and flexibly change network topology before or during implementation with minimal impact on project cost.

Effective teaching of endoscopy:a qualitative study of the perceptions of gastroenterology fellows and attending gastroenterologists

Background:There is little information describing the perceptions of gastroenterology fellows and attending gastroenterologists of what constitutes effective teaching of *** sought to identify common themes regarding endoscopy training methods and their impact among fellows and ***:Focus group exercises and surveys were conducted among fellows,about educational resources,teaching techniques and ways of improving the teaching of *** fellows identified the‘best’teachers of endoscopy,who were interviewed regarding their training in endoscopy,their teaching methods,key points of information,and opinions on endoscopy ***:Nineteen fellows(68%)had attended the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy First Year Fellows’Endoscopy course and found it very *** fellows(46%)had exposure to an endoscopy simulator,but their median duration of use was only 1 *** two out of five fellowship programs used a formal endoscopic skill assessment tool and none of the programs had an endoscopy curriculum of which the fellows were *** reported that they learned endoscopy best by performing *** also volunteered that attending gastroenterologists used variable teaching methods,and might benefit from instruction on how to teach *** attending gastroenterologists(77%)had received training in advanced procedures;none received formal training on teaching endoscopy:they all felt that such training would be ***:A standardized endoscopy curriculum may be beneficial to fellows,who prefer to learn endoscopy by performing procedures—but they want explicit and specific *** those attending and the fellows thought that formal instruction for attending gastroenterologists on how to teach endoscopy would be beneficial,indicating a role for a‘teachthe-teacher’curriculum.

cavities and fractures significantly affect the flow paths in carbonate reservoirs and should be accurately accounted for in numerical ***,we consider the problem of computing the effective permeability of rock samples based on high-resolution 3DcT scans containingmillions of *** use the Stokes-Brinkman equations in the entire domain,covering regions of free flow governed by the Stokes equations,porous Darcy flow,and transitions between *** presence of different length scales and large(ten orders of magnitude)contrasts in permeability leads to highly ill-conditioned linear systems of equations,which are difficult to *** obtain a problem that is computationally tractable,we first analyze the relative importance of the Stokes and Darcy terms for a set of idealized 2D *** find that,in terms of effective permeability,the Stokes-Brinkman equations are only applicable for a special parameter set where the effective free-flow permeability is less than four orders of magnitude different from the matrix *** other cases can be accurately modeled with either the Stokes or the Darcy end-member flows,depending on if there do or do not exist percolating free-flow *** insights obtained are used to perform a direct computation of the effective permeability of a rock sample model with more than 8 million cells.
