Effect of the Inclusion of Chestnut in the Finishing Diet on Volatile Compounds of Dry-Cured Ham from Celta Pig Breed

The effect of the inclusion of chestnut in pigs ifnishing diet on volatile compounds of dry-cured Celta ham was studied. Twelve hams of each type （from three different pigs ifnishing diets：concentrate （CO）, mixed （MI） and chestnut （CH）） were used. Volatiles were extracted using a purge-and-trap method and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry （GC/MS）. Thirty-nine volatile compounds were identified in dry-cured Celta ham samples. Most abundant volatiles in ham samples were aldehydes, which represented respectively, 53% （CO）, 51% （MI） and 46% （CH） of the total volatile composition. With the exception of 2-butenal, 2-methyl, all aldehydes were affected by feeding system. On the other hand, hydrocarbons n-alkanes were the second major group in the volatile proifle of dry-cured Celta hams and represented 28.9, 35.7 and 32.4%of the total volatile composition for CO, MI and CH groups, respectively. Ham samples from chestnut group showed a higher content of alcohols and this result could be related with the inclusion of chestnut in the ifnishing diet of pigs. Principal component analysis showed a good separation among groups. The discriminant analysis selected eight variables （butanoic acid, hexanal, octanal, nonenal （E）, decenal （E）, tetradecane, decane trimethyl and pyridine 2-methyl） and calculated two discriminating functions to predict if chestnut has been included in the ifnishing diet. Thus, it was possible to discriminate between groups fed with ifnishing diets containing chestnuts in their composition （mixed and chestnut group）.

We establish new criteria for the existence of either positive or nonzero solutions of the Urysohn integral equation. We also discuss the existence of an interval of positive eigenvalues and sufficient conditions for the existence of at least a positive eigenvalue with a nonzero or positive eigenfunction for the Urysohn integral operator. Among others, we employ techniques based on fixed point index theory for compact maps, which are new for this type of equation.

Ammopiptanthus nanus is an endangered evergreen shrub endemic to the deserts of central Asia and plays an important role in delaying further desertification. We examined allozyme variation and AFLP diversity in A. nanus populations and investigated the mating system of this species using progeny arrays assayed for poly-morphic allozyme loci. Mating system analysis in the Keyi’eryongke’er population showed low levels of out-crossing, and strong inbreeding depression. Low levels of genetic variation were detected at both population (allozyme, Pp=14.0%, A=1.14, He=0.031; AFLP, Pp=14.5%, Shannon’s information index I=0.063) and species (allozyme, Pp=21.1%, A=1.21, He=0.040; AFLP, Pp=20.9%, I=0.083) levels; while moderate genetic differentiation existed among populations, as indicated by allozymes (GST=0.081) and AFLP (GST=0.151-0.193). Founder effect, bottlenecks in evolutionary history, the mixed mating system and co-ancestry may have influenced the level of genetic diversity in A. nanus. Markers of both types provide new insights for conservation management, indicating that the Biao’ertuokuoyi and Keyi’eryongke’er populations should be given priority for in situ conservation and regarded as seed sources for ex situ conservation.

Diabetic neuropathy, the most common form of peripheral neuropathy, presents as different forms of focal or diffuse neuropathy, including the disabling, or potentially life-threatening clinical entities of painful diabetic neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, and diabetic foot. The pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy results from the concurrent action of various intersecting factors of nerve damage, such as oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, microangiopathy and ischemia, triggered by hyperglycemia and related biochemical changes. Symptomatic treatment of diabetic neuropathy mainly concerns therapies for neuropathic pain, interventions targeted at the organ systems involved in autonomic neuropathy, and management of diabetic foot. Therapeutic approaches to the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy have focused on the different components of the causes of nerve damage, particularly oxidative stress, which has been demonstrated to play a central role. Alpha-lipoic acid, a potent lipophilic free radical scavenger, has been used in treatment of patients with diabetic neuropathy, displaying efficacy on the chief symptoms, including neuropathic pain, and showing that neuropathic deficits may be improved by treatment. Current evidence suggests a possible efficacy of alpha-lipoic acid not only for neuropathic symptoms, but also for reducing the risk factors for diabetic neuropathy.

Visible light communication(VLC)is a wireless technology that relies on optical intensity modulation and is potentially a game changer for internet-of-things(IoT)***,VLC is hindered by the low penetration depth of visible light in non-transparent *** solution is to extend operation into the“nearly(in)visible”near-infrared(NIR,700-1000 nm)region,thus also enabling VLC in photonic bio-applications,considering the biological tissue NIR semitransparency,while conveniently retaining vestigial red emission to help check the link operativity by simple eye ***,we report new far-red/NIR organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs)with a 650-800 nm emission range and external quantum efficiencies among the highest reported in this spectral range(>2.7%,with maximum radiance and luminance of 3.5 mW/cm^(2) and 260 cd/m^(2),respectively).With these OLEDs,we then demonstrate a“real-time”VLC setup achieving a data rate of 2.2 Mb/s,which satisfies the requirements for IoT and biosensing *** are the highest rates ever reported for an online unequalised VLC link based on solution-processed OLEDs.

During this research, experimental rolled homogeneous armour steel was cast, annealed and laser cut to form an appliqué plate. This Martensitic–Bainitic microstructure steel grade was used to test a novel means of engineering lightweight armour. It was determined that a laser cutting speed of 1200 mm/min produced optimum hole formations with limited distortion. The array of holes acts as a double-edged solution, in that they provide weight saving of 45%, providing a protective advantage and increasing the surface area. Data collected were used to generate laser cut-edge hole projections in order to identify the optimum cutting speed, edge condition, cost and deformation performance. These parameters resulted in the generation of a surface, with less stress raising features. This can result in a distribution of stress across the wider surface. Provided that appropriate process parameters are used to generate laser cut edges, then the hardness properties of the surface can be controlled. This is due to compressive residual stresses produced in the near edge region as a result of metallurgical transformations. This way the traverse cutting speed parameter can be adjusted to alter critical surface characteristics and microstructural properties in close proximity to the cut-edge. A relationship was identified between the width of the laser HAZ and the hardness of the cut edge. It is the thickness of the HAZ that is affected by the laser process parameters which can be manipulated with adjusting the traverse cutting speed.

Agglomerate behavior in a recirculating fluidized bed with sheds： Effect of ring baffles

The radioactive particle tracking technique was used to study the effect of internal ring baffles on wet agglomerate motion inside a cold flow recirculating fluidized bed. The study found that using such a baffle on its own or above the regular sheds helps reduce the fouling of the stripper section by increasing the residence time that the agglomerates spend above the baffle, thereby reducing the release of the vapors below the baffles that cause fouling of the sheds. Adding down-comers, or flux tubes, to the ring baffles degrades the performance of the baffles, Reducing the length of the flux tubes, so that they do not reach the bottom of the baffle lip results in a further degradation in baffle performance.
