Depression among elderly chinese-canadian immigrants from china's Mainland

Background This study examined the prevalence of depressive symptoms among elderly immigrants from china's Mainland to canada and the impact of various psychosocial factors as predictors of the number of depressive symptoms reported by the elderly chinese immigrants Methods The participants were 444 elderly immigrants who migrated from china's Mainland to canada They were a part of a random sample of 2272 elderly chinese living in the communities and took part in a face-to-face interview to answer questions in an orally administrated questionnaire The depressive symptoms of the participants were measured by a chinese version of the Geriatric Depression Scale Data obtained from the 444 elderly chinese immigrants was analyzed to assess the impact of various psychosocial factors on the number of depressive symptoms that they reported Results The findings indicated that 23 2% of the elderly immigrants were assessed to have some depressive symptoms when other predicting variables were adjusted, elderly immigrants with more chronic illnesses, less positive attitude towards ageing, poorer physical health, less adequate financial situation, lower level of ethnic identification as chinese, more service barriers, lower level of life satisfaction, shorter length of residency in canada and those who lived alone tended to have more depressive symptoms conclusions The findings indicate that the prevalence rate of depressive symptoms among our elderly immigrant sample is higher than the one reported in a general elderly population while further research is recommended to examine the reasons for such a difference, culturally appropriate health services, including health promotion programs, should be promoted to reduce mental health disparities

This letter focuses on a recently published article that provided an exceptional description of the effect of epigenetic modifications on gene expression patterns related to skeletal system ***,it discusses a novel modality of epigenetic regulation,the long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs),and provides evidence of their involvement in mesenchymal stromal/stem cells osteo-/adipogenic differentiation *** focus on lncRNAs,there is an emerging cross talk between lncRNAs and miRNAs interaction as a novel mechanism in the regulation of the function of the musculoskeletal system,by controlling bone homeostasis and bone regeneration,as well as the osteogenic differentiation of stem ***,we touched on some examples to demonstrate this *** addition,we believe there is still much to discover from the effects of lncRNAs on progenitor and non-progenitor cell *** incorporated data from other published articles to review lncRNAs in normal progenitor cell osteogenic differentiation,determined lncRNAs involved in osteoarthritis pathogenesis in progenitor cells,and provided a review of lncRNAs in non-progenitor cells that are differentially regulated in *** conclusion,we really enjoyed reading this article and with this information we hope to further our understanding of lncRNAs and mesenchymal stromal/stem cells regulation.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether interactive video game(IVG)training is an effective way to improve postural control outcomes and decrease the risk of falls.A convenience sample of 12 prefrail older adults were recruited and divided into two groups:intervention group performed IVG training for 40 minutes,twice per week,for a total of 16 *** control group received no intervention and continued their usual *** measures were centre of pressure(cOP),mean velocity,sway area,and sway *** outcomes were Berg Balance Scale,Timed Up and Go(TUG),Falls Efficacy Scale International(FES-I),and Activities-Specific Balance confidence(ABc).Assessment was conducted with preintervention(week zero)and postintervention(week eight).The intervention group showed significant improvement in mean velocity,sway area,Berg Balance Scale,and TUG(pcompared to the control ***,no significant improvement was observed for sway path(p=0:35),FES-I(p=0:383),and ABc(p=0:283).This study showed that IVG training led to significant improvements in postural control but not for risk of falls.

By using risk-adjusted price signals to transfer responsibility for property-level flood protection and recovery from governments to property owners,flood insurance represents a key tenet of the flood risk management(FRM)*** Government of canada has worked with insurers to introduce flood insurance for the first time as a part of a broader shift towards FRM to limit the growing costs of *** viability of flood insurance in canada,however,has been questioned by research that disputes the utility of purchasing coverage by property *** study tested this assumption by drawing on public opinion survey data to assess factors that influence decisions about the utility of *** findings reveal that canadians have limited knowledge of flood insurance coverage,exhibit a low willingness-to-pay for both insurance and property-level flood protection measures,and expect governments to shoulder much of the financial burden of flood recovery through disaster assistance.

conversion of cO2 into cO using plasma processing powered by renewable energy is a promising method to convert intermittent sustainable electricity into storable chemical *** extensive research efforts worldwide,there is currently no process that achieves economically viable values for both cO2 conversion fraction and energy recovery efficiency *** we demonstrate that a process that utilizes the Boudouard reaction,cO^2++c→2 cO,driven by a thermal plasma allows both 95%cO2 conversion to cO and energy recovery efficiency of 70%,values far higher than seen so *** comparing the conversion process with and without cO2 excitation by a plasma and by using optical emission spectroscopy we show that the improved performance is due to a novel mode of operation where cO2 is pyrolyzed into an active mixture of cO,O and O2 by an arc discharge which is then introduced into a fixed bed to interact with carbon *** this way,the free oxygen in the mixture combusts with carbon to form cO,and residual plasma excited cO2 is reduced by *** the overall process,the endothermic Boudouard reaction is partially replaced by an exothermic reaction,and the excess electric energy to produce cO2 plasma is reused in the carbon bed.

1-(2-chlorophenyl) ethanol (cPE) is of health and environmental concern due to its toxicity and its use as an inter-mediate in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The current work deals with the catalytic reductive dechlorination and detoxification of cPE by Pd/Fe bimetal. cPE was effectively dechlorinated to 1-phenyl ethanol (PE) accompanied by the equivalent release of chloride. The extent of cPE dechlorination increased with temperature,Fe dosage and Pd loading. A decrease in solution pH increased cPE dechlorination,resulting presumably from an increase in hydrogen production. Under the specific conditions of 20 g/L Pd/Fe,0.10% Pd (w/w) and initial pH 5-6,the cPE dechlorination was completed within 145 min. The dechlorination fol-lowed a pseudo-first-order kinetics with an activation energy of 56.7 kJ/mol. The results of toxicity testing showed that cPE was very toxic to chlorella,whereas PE showed little toxicity. The toxicity of the reaction solution declined gradually and the pro-moting effects on chlorella intensified consequently with the dechlorination process. Thus,the reductive dechlorination of cPE to PE by Pd/Fe was a detoxification process. It may be used to effectively reduce the toxicological effects of cPE-contaminated wastewater,thereby enhancing the performance of subsequent biological processes in wastewater treatment.
