Tensile and tear-type fracture toughness of gypsum material:Direct and indirect testing methods

In this context,four specimens,i.e.(i)circumferentially notched cylindrical torsion(CNCT),(ii)circum-ferentially notched cylindrical direct tension(CNCDT),(iii)edge notch disc bend(ENDB)and(iv)three-point bend beam(3PBB),were utilized to measure the modesⅠandⅢfracture toughness values of *** the CNCT specimen provides pure modeⅢloading in a direct manner,this pure mode condition is indirectly produced by the ENDB *** ENDB specimen provided lower KⅢc and a non-coplanar(***)fracture surface compared with the CNCT specimen,which showed a planar modeⅢfracture *** ENDB specimen is also employed for conducting pure modeⅠ(with different crack depths)and mixed modeⅠ/Ⅲ*** value was independent of the notch depth,and it was consistent with the RILEM and ASTM standard *** the modeⅢfracture results were highly sensitive to the notch *** the fracture resistance against modeⅢwas significantly lower than that of modeⅠ,the greater work of fracture under modeⅢwas noticeable.

Many problems with underlying variational structure involve a coupling of volume with surface effects.A straight-forward approach in a finite element discretiza- tion is to make use of the surface triangulation that is naturally induced by the volume *** an adaptive method one wants to facilitate'matching'local mesh modifications,i.e.,local refinement and/or coarsening,of volume and surface mesh with standard tools such that the surface grid is always induced by the volume grid. We describe the concepts behind this approach for bisectional refinement and describe new tools incorporated in the finite element toolbox *** also present several important applications of the mesh coupling.

Objective To assess the influence of age on the error of estimate （EE） of maximal oxygen uptake （VO2max） using sex and population specific-equations in cycle ergometer exercise testing, since estimated VO2 max is associated with a substantial EE, often exceeding 20%, possibly due to intrinsic variability of mechanical efficiency. Methods 1850 adults （68% men）, aged 18 to 91 years, underwent maximal cycle ergometer cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Cardiorespiratory fitness （CRF） was assessed relative to sex and age [younger （18 to 35 years）, middle-aged （36 to 60 years） and older （〉 60 years）]. VO2max [mL.（***）-1] was directly measured by assessment of gas exchange and estimated using sex and population specific-equations. Measured and estimated values of VO2max and related EE were compared among the three age- and sex-specific groups. Results Directly measured VO2max of men and women were 29.5 ± 10.5 mL.（***）-1 and 24.2 ± 9.0 mL.（kg·min） -1 （P 〈 0.01）. EE [mL·（kg·min）-1] and percent errors （%E） for men and women had similar values, 0.5 ± 3.2 and 0.4 ± 2.9 mL·（kg·min）-1, and -0.8 ± 13.1% and -1.7 ± 15.4% （P 〉 0.05）, respectively. EE and %E for each age-group were, respectively, for men： younger = 1.9 ± 4.1 mL·（kg·min）-1 and 3.8 ± 10.5%, middle-aged = 0.6 ± 3.1 mL.（kg·min）-1 and 0.4 ± 10.3%, older = -0.2 ± 2.7 mL·（kg·min） -1 and -4.2 ± 16.6% （P 〈 0.01）; and for women： younger = 1.2 ± 3.1 mL.（***）-1 and 2.7 ±10.0%, middle-aged = 0.7 ± 2.8 mL·（kg·min）-1 and 0.5 ± 11.1%, older = -0.8 ± 2.3 mL-（kg·min）-1 and -9.5 ± 22.4% （P 〈 0.01）. Conclusion VO2max were underestimated in younger age-groups and were overestimated in older age groups. Age significantly influences the magnitude of the EE of VO2max in both men and women and should be considered when CRF is estimated using population specific equations, rather than directly measured.

Nearly 30% of adults 40 years and older in the United States are on a *** widespread use heightens the importance of careful consideration of their varied effects on the *** randomized controlled trials have not confirmed cognitive impairing effects with statins,continuing evidence suggests statins have the ability to cause reversible cognitive impairment in some ***,statins have also been shown to decrease the risk of dementia,Alzheimer’s disease,and improve cognitive impairment in some ***,randomized controlled trials have similarly failed to find the beneficial *** evidence for both claims is compelling whereas known limitations of the clinical trials may explain the lack of *** narrative review aims to explain why there is still controversy and how both effects can,and may,be *** mechanisms that have been hypothesized for each effect are seemingly independent from one another and may explain the contradicting *** mindful of the complex effects of statins,health care providers need to be able to identify patients who are at risk for or already experiencing cognitive impairment from statin use while also identifying those who could potentially decrease their risk of dementia with statins.

This letter focuses on a recently published article that provided an exceptional description of the effect of epigenetic modifications on gene expression patterns related to skeletal system ***,it discusses a novel modality of epigenetic regulation,the long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs),and provides evidence of their involvement in mesenchymal stromal/stem cells osteo-/adipogenic differentiation *** focus on lncRNAs,there is an emerging cross talk between lncRNAs and miRNAs interaction as a novel mechanism in the regulation of the function of the musculoskeletal system,by controlling bone homeostasis and bone regeneration,as well as the osteogenic differentiation of stem ***,we touched on some examples to demonstrate this *** addition,we believe there is still much to discover from the effects of lncRNAs on progenitor and non-progenitor cell *** incorporated data from other published articles to review lncRNAs in normal progenitor cell osteogenic differentiation,determined lncRNAs involved in osteoarthritis pathogenesis in progenitor cells,and provided a review of lncRNAs in non-progenitor cells that are differentially regulated in *** conclusion,we really enjoyed reading this article and with this information we hope to further our understanding of lncRNAs and mesenchymal stromal/stem cells regulation.
