To the Editor： The increased rate of leukemia in several Iraqi cities has been linked to exposure to depleted uranium, which was used during the consequent wars in lraq from 1990 to 2010.11-41 Here, we investigated leukemia occurrence in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate （SG）, which has been exposed to wars and crises at the same level as the rest of Iraq.151 To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first population-based study on leukemia in SG.

PoreScript:Semi-automated pore size algorithm for scaffold characterization

The scaffold pore size influences many critical physical aspects of tissue engineering,including tissue infiltration,biodegradation rate,and mechanical *** measurements of pore sizes from scanning electron micrographs using ImageJ/FIJI are commonly used to characterize scaffolds,but these methods are both time-consuming and subject to user *** semi-automated analysis tools are limited by a lack of accessibility or limited sample size in their verification *** work here describes the development of a new MATLAB algorithm,PoreScript,to address these *** algorithm was verified using three common scaffold fabrication methods(e.g.,salt leaching,gas foaming,emulsion templating)with varying pore sizes and shapes to demonstrate the versatility of this new *** results demonstrate that the pore size characterization using PoreScript is comparable to manual pore size *** PoreScript algorithm was further evaluated to determine the effect of user-input and image parameters(relative image magnification,pixel intensity threshold,and pore structure).Overall,this work validates the accuracy of the PoreScript algorithm across several fabrication methods and provides user-guidance for semi-automated image analysis and increased throughput of scaffold characterization.

Commercial lithium(Li)-ion batteries(LIBs)are approaching their theoretical limits in energy *** a result,Li metal batteries(LMBs)with either liquid or solid-state electrolytes have been proposed as a next-generation alternative,although they currently pose major safety and stability *** resolve these issues,most research has focused on the development and production of novelmaterials and *** promising performance benchmarks have been achieved,these strategiesmay generate issues for large-scale production,due to the added costs associated with using novel materials and developing the required cell fabrication process and *** external conditions,such as selecting specific cell cycling protocols,testing the cell or synthesizing materials at specific temperatures,testing or fabricating the cell under specific mechanical pressures,etc.,are often overlooked as a means of directly improving battery performance without requiring complex material *** this review,we will discuss how these external parameters can address the key failure mechanisms and challenges in LMBs that use either liquid or solid *** and differences in mechanisms(Li+transport,Li dendrite propagation,thermal effects,etc.)observed in liquid and solid-state configurations will also be ***,we propose the outstanding scientific and economic gaps in LMBs,thereby providing future directions to explore.

Gastrointestinal toxicities(GIT), including oral mucositis,nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea, are common side effects of chemotherapy and targeted agents in patients with advanced colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer. Being often underreported, it is still difficult to precisely establish their burden in terms of both patient's quality of life and cancer care costs. Moreover, with the use of more intensive upfront combination regimens, the frequency of these toxicities is rapidly growing with a potential negative effect also on patient's outcome, as a result of dose reductions, delays or even discontinuation of active treatments. Thus, identifying patients at higher risk of developing GIT as well as an optimal management are paramount in order to improve patient's compliance and outcome. After the description of the main treatment-induced GIT, we discuss the current knowledge on the pathophysiology of these side effects and comment the scales commonly used to assess and grade them. We then provide a critical update on GIT incidence based on the results of key randomized trials conducted in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and advanced pancreatic cancer.
