Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide that is primarily extracted from brown seaweeds which has been broadly studied in recent years due to its numerous biological properties, including anticoagulant, antithrombotic, antitumor, and antiviral activities. In this study, fucoidan was evaluated against clinic isolated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) 1 - 20, either alone or with antibiotics, via broth dilution method and checkerboard and time kill assay. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs)/Minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) values for the fucoidan against all the tested bacteria ranged between 64 - 512/256 - 2048 microg/mL, for ampicillin 32 - 1024/64 - 1024 microg/mL and for oxacillin 8 - 64/16 - 256 microg/mL respectively. Furthermore, the MIC and MBC were reduced to one half-eighth as a result of the combination of the fucoidan with antibiotics. 2 - 6 hours of treatment with 1/2 MIC of fucoidan with 1/2 MIC of antibiotics resulted from an increase of the rate of killing in units of CFU/mL to a greater degree than was observed with alone. These results suggest that fucoidan could be employed as a natural antibacterial agent against multi-drug bacteria.

Methicillin-restitant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is very dangerous bacteria and one of the most feared nosocomial germs. In this study, acacetin was evaluated against 20 clinical isolates of MRSA, either alone or in combination with antibiotics. The acacetin exhibited a good activity against isolates MRSA with MICs/MBCs ranged between 10-80/20-160 μg/mL, for ampicillin 64-1024/128-2048 μg/mL, and for oxacillin 8-32/16-64 μg/mL. The combination of acacetin plus oxacillin or ampicillin was reduced by ≥4-fold against isolates MRSA tested, evidencing a synergistic effect as defined by a FICI of ≤0.5. Furthermore, a time-kill study evaluating the growth of the tested bacteria was completely attenuated after 2-5 h of treatment with the 1/2 MIC of acacetin, regardless of whether it was administered alone or with oxacillin (1/2 MIC) or ampicillin (1/2 MIC). In conclusion, acacetin exerted synergistic effects when administered with oxacillin or ampicillin and the antibacterial activity and resistant regulation of acacetin against clinical isolates of MRSA might be useful in controlling MRSA infections.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary is a kind of sex cord-stromal tumor, which occurs between teens and twenties with symptoms including abdominal pain and swelling. The incidence rate is infinitely rare comprising less than 0.5% of all ovarian tumor. The average age of “retiform Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor” is 17 years as compared to 25 years for Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors as a group. We have experienced this rare case of retiform Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in a 25-year-old foreign patient with the complaint of palpable mass on the right lower quadrant and an irregular menstrual period. The patient underwent right salpingo-oophorectomy and tumor stage was FIGO stage 1A. We report with a brief review of literature.

尺度效应是阻碍对泥石流复杂动力学过程理解的最主要因素。土工离心机通过提供一个等效的高倍重力加速度场,能够在模型中还原岩土工程原型的应力状态,为泥石流物理模拟的尺度效应难题提供了一个经济可行的解决方案。在总结前人提出的两相流(泥石流)无量纲参数的基础上,建立了应用于土工离心机模拟泥石流的分层次相似性试验设计体系,可以确保模型和原型中泥石流运动学与动力学参数绝对值和相对值的一致,从而可以系统性地还原泥石流原型问题的物理过程。同时,针对对模拟结果产生较大影响的科里奥利效应和1g自然重力加速度,建议试验设计阶段选择有效旋转半径更大的离心机并适当降低旋转角速度。研究结果对泥石流和碎屑流的小尺度、大尺度物理模拟以及离心机模拟具有理论和技术层面的参考意义。

Cryptotanshinone (CT), a major tanshinone of medicinal plant Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, demonstrated effective in vitro antibacterial activity against all oral bacteria tested in this experiment. The antibacterial activities of CT against oral bacteria were assessed using the checkerboard and time-kill methods to evaluate the synergistic effects of treatment with ampicillin or gentamicin. The CT was determined against oral pathogenic bacteria with MIC and MBC values ranging from 0.5 to 16 and 1 to 64 μg/mL;for am- picillin from 0.0313 to 16 and 0.125 to 32 μg/mL;for gentamicin from 2 to 256 and 4 to 512 μg/mL respectively. The range of MIC50 and MIC90 were 0.0625 - 8 μg/mL and 1 - 64 μg/mL, respectively. The combination effects of CT with antibiotics were synergistic (FIC index < 0.5) against tested oral bacteria except additive, Streptococcus sobrinus, S. criceti, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (FIC index < 0.75 - 1.0). The MBCs were shown reducing ≥4 - 8-fold, indicating a synergistic effect as defined by a FBCI of ≤0.5. Furthermore, a time-kill study showed that the growth of the tested bacteria was completely attenuated after 3 - 6 h of treatment with the 1/2 MIC of CT, regardless of whether it was administered alone or with ampicillin or gentamicin. The results suggest that CT could be employed as a natural antibacterial agent against cariogenic and periodontopathogenic bac- teria.

Red ginseng is a well-known alternative medicine with anti-inflammatory *** exerts pharmacological effects through the transformation of saponin into metabolites by intestinal *** that intestinal microflora vary among individuals,the pharmacological effects of red ginseng likely vary among *** order to produce homogeneously effective red ginseng,we prepared probiotic-fermented red ginseng and evaluated its activity using a dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)-induced colitis model in *** analysis of intestinal damage indicated that the administration of probiotic-fermented red ginseng significantly decreased the severity of colitis,compared with the control and the activity was higher than that induced by oral administration of ginseng powder or probiotics *** analysis of the levels of serum IL-6 and TNF-α,inflammatory biomarkers that are increased at the initiation stage of colitis,were significantly decreased in probiotic-fermented red ginseng-treated groups in comparison to the control *** levels of inflammatory cytokines and mR NAs for inflammatory factors in colorectal tissues were also significantly decreased in probiotic-fermented red ginseng-treated ***,oral administration of probiotic-fermented red ginseng reduced the severity of colitis in a mouse model,suggesting that it can be used as a uniformly effective red ginseng product.

Owing to their capacity for self-renewal and pluripotency, stem cells possess untold potential for revolutionizing the field of regenerative medicine through the development of novel therapeutic strategies for treating cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Central to developing these strategies is improving our understanding of biological mechanisms responsible for governing stem cell fate and self-renewal. Increasing attention is being given to the significance of metabolism, through the production of energy and generation of small molecules, as a critical regulator of stem cell functioning. Rapid advances in the field of metabolomics now allow for in-depth profiling of stem cells both in vitro and in vivo, providing a systems perspective on key metabolic and molecular pathways which influence stem cell biology. Understanding the analytical platforms and techniques that are currently used to study stem cell metabolomics, as well as how new insights can be derived from this knowledge, will accelerate new research in the field and improve future efforts to expand our understanding of the interplay between metabolism and stem cell biology.
