A signal-substrate match in the substrate-borne component of a multimodal courtship display

The environment can impose strong limitations on the efficacy of signal transmission. In particular, for vibratorycommunication, the signaling environment is often extremely heterogeneous at small scales. Nevertheless, natural selection isexpected to select for signals well-suited for effective transmission. Here, we test for substrate-dependent signal efficacy in thewolf spider Schizocosa stridulans Stratton 1991. We first explore the transmission characteristics of this important signaling modalityby playing recorded substrate-borne signals through three different substrates (leaf litter, pine litter, and red clay) andmeasuring the propagated signal. We found that the substrate-borne signal of S. stridulans attenuates the least on leaf litter, thesubstrate upon which the species is naturally found. Next, by assessing mating success with artificially muted and non-mutedmales across different signaling substrates (leaf litter, pine litter, and sand), we explored the relationship between substrate-bornesignaling and signaling substrate for mating success. We found that muted males were unsuccessful in obtaining copulations regardlessof substrate, while mating success was dependent on the signaling substrate for non-muted males. For non-muted males,more males copulated on leaf litter than any other substrate. Taken together, these results confirm the importance of substrate-borne signaling in S. stridulans and suggest a match between signal properties and signal efficacy - leaf litter transmits thesignal most effectively and males are most successful in obtaining copulations on leaf litter [Current Zoology 56 (3): 370-378,2010].

Esophageal adenocarcinoma is a cancer with poor prognosis,and its incidence has risen sharply over recent *** is a major risk factor for developing this cancer and there is a clear male gender bias in the incidence that cannot be fully explained by known risk *** is possible that a difference in the expression of estrogen,or its signaling axes,may contribute to this gender *** undertook a comprehensive literature search and analyzed the available data regarding estrogen and estrogen receptor expression,and the possible sex-specific links with esophageal adenocarcinoma *** relevant associations between visceral vs subcutaneous fat deposition and estrogen expression,and the effect of crosstalk between estrogen and leptin signaling were *** also found limited studies suggesting a role for estrogen receptor β expression in esophageal adenocarcinoma *** current literature supports speculation on an etiological role for estrogen in the male gender bias in esophageal adenocarcinoma,but further studies are required.

Construction and expression of a Rev-dependent TNF-R1 expressing HIV-infected-cell injurious vectors

Background Rev is necessary for exporting unspliced and incompletely spliced intron containing HIV mRNAs and for HIV replication. The aim of this study is to develop a kind of selective suicide construct that can specifically and directly induce HIV infected cells into apoptosis based on the high affinity of Rev and Rev response element （RRE）. Methods Molecular-cloning technique was used to synthesis Rev dependent TNF-R1 expression construct pDM128-TNF-R1 （pT128） that contains RRE and TNFR1 gene. Restriction digestion, Polymerase Chain Reaction （PCR） and DNA sequencing were processed and the exactness and correctness of the inserted TNF-R1 gene in pT128 were confirmed repeatedly. The expression of pT128 co-transfected with different combination of other plasmids by calcium phosphate-DNA co-precipitation in Helas and by gene gun transfection in keratinocytes was further tested by flow-cytometry and cell counted under microscope. Results The new plasmid specifically expressed TNF-R1 in Helas when co-transfected with pRev but did not when without pRev. Indirect expression of TNF-R1 from pT128 was slower than the direct expression of that from Hu p60 TNFR1 in pDC302 （pT60） , but all those pT60 or pT128 transfected cells showed apoptosis at last while TNF-R1 was sufficiently expressed. Other kinds of Rev expression construct such as pAD8 and a chimeric HIV vaccine also can switched on the selective expression of pT128. Not only Rev-dependent expression in Helas, pT128 also normally expressed its TNF-R1 in keratinocytes. Co-transfected with prey or pAD8 that expressed Rev, pT128 expressed TNF-R1 and induced apoptosis of green fluorescent keratinocytes in skin explant. The number of green fluorescent keratinocytes co-transfected by pT128 plus prey or pAD8 was gradually outnumbered by that co-transfected by pT128 only. The difference was more significant after culturing for 72 hours. Conclusions Rev dependent pT128 is able to selectively induce apoptosis of HIV-infect

Background:Most papers examining the lateral abdominal muscles(LAMs)and low back pain(LBP)are cross-sectional,with groups of participants being divided into a control and an LBP *** hypothesized that morphological measurements of the LAMs in adolescent soccer players may predict future LBP *** aim of this study was to examine the associations between the morphology of LAMs and LBP incidence rate among adolescent soccer ***:Ninety-seven adolescent male soccer players with no LBP at baseline were recruited into the prospective cohort *** thickness of the LAMs was measured at baseline by ultrasound imaging in a supine rest *** cases of LBP occurred during the follow-up 6-month ***:An obliquus internus(OI)asymmetry was related to increasing LBP risk(odds ratio=19.99;95%CI:2.4-167.9).Spearman correlation also showed a linear relationship between OI asymmetry value and duration of LBP(R=0.75,p=0.02).An OI side-to-side difference greater than 1.25 mm suggests possible LBP incidence in the 6-month observation among adolescent soccer ***:The morphological changes of the OI may be related to LBP’s incidence in adolescent soccer *** presence of OI asymmetry increases the odds of LBP by at least 2.4 *** of the OI on one side of the body may contribute to trunk muscle imbalance.

Can active late-type stars contribute to the Galactic lithium abundance?

Lithium abundances in our Galaxy and especially 6 Li abundances provide important constraints on our understanding of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis(BBNS),stellar evolution and the creation of light elements by cosmic rays in the ISM.~6 Li has been detected in energetic solar events,one chromospherically active binary and several dwarf halo *** our work on active late-type stars with high lithium abundances,we expand our study to consider if the flare origin of lithium created by spallation can contribute significantly to the Galactic abundance of *** previously derived ~6 Li/~7 Li=0.030 ± 0.010 for active K dwarf GJ 117 using VLT UVES *** find^6 Li/~7 Li ratios of 0.02 and 0.10 for two other stars in our sample,GJ 182 and EUVE J1145-55.3 A,*** that these later type,active stars have significant flare rates and stellar winds,we have estimated the contribution of these stars to the Galactic lithium *** that K and M stars comprise over 84% of our Galaxy and that many of these can have significant stellar winds,we conclude that spallation in stellar flares can contribute 1% and up to 5% of the Galactic lithium abundance.

Neurological features in celiac disease(CD) are not rare(5%-36%), but tremor is scarcely described. Subjects with CD and healthy controls completed an online survey using WHIGET tremor rating scale. One thousand five hundred and twelve subjects completed the survey, finally 674 CD patients and 290 healthy subjects were included. A higher prevalence of tremor in CD patients was observed in comparison to controls(28% vs 14%, P < 0.001). Frequency of family history of tremor in CD patients with and without tremor was 25% and 20%(P = 0.2), while in the control group it was 41% and 10%(P < 0.001). Controls with tremor showed a higher frequency of family history of tremor when compared to CD patients with tremor(41.5% vs 24.6%, P = 0.03). The results suggested that tremor in CD might be more frequent and possibly related to the disease itself and not due to associated essential tremor.

Barrett's esophagus is a premalignant condition caused by gastroesophageal reflux. Once developed, it can progress through varying grades of dysplasia to esoph-ageal adenocarcinoma. Whilst it is well accepted that Barrett's esophagus is caused by gastroesophageal reflux, the molecular mechanisms of its pathogenesis and progression to cancer remain unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short segments of RNA that have been shown to control the expression of many human genes. They have been implicated in most cellular processes, and the role of miRNAs in disease development is be-coming increasingly evident. Understanding altered miRNA expression is likely to help unravel the molecular mechanisms that underpin the development of Barrett's esophagus and its progression to cancer.
