The present study aimed to explore the drivers of early marriage and teenage pregnancy in Kenya and Uganda during COVID-19 lockdown period.A systematic review design was adopted.The major online databases utilized were PubMed,Google Scholar,Uganda and Kenya Ministry of Health repositories,ScienceDirect,and Scopus.Studies that were originating from Kenya and Uganda that were publicly available in electronic format published from March 2020 to March 2022 were used.The thematic analysis identified major concepts that were drivers to the present research problem which were as follows:(1)school closure and(2)loss of income by parents.The COVID-19 containment measures introduced in the two countries were noted as major contributing factors.During the pandemic,lockdown led to school closures which meant the teenagers being idle at home with an increased opportunity to indulge in sexual risk behaviors.Schools have been noted to be a safe place protecting this vulnerable population.However,with their prolonged closure,the teenagers were exposed to sexual predators.Parents lost income,and this might have contributed to early marriages and teenagers’dependency on their sexual partners.Based on the reviewed evidence,the present study furthers the advocacy for the reduction of early marriages and teenage pregnancy,especially in the current COVID-19 pandemic era.The study calls upon the governments to intensify efforts toward the present research problem as the COVID-19 pandemic is eroding the earlier gains made within the region.

Identifying RNA Modifications by Direct RNA Sequencing Reveals Complexity of Epitranscriptomic Dynamics in Rice

Transcriptome analysis based on high-throughput sequencing of a cDNA library has been widely applied to functional genomic studies.However,the cDNA dependence of most RNA sequencing techniques constrains their ability to detect base modifications on RNA,which is an important element for the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression.To comprehensively profile the N^(6)-methyladenosine(m^(6)A)and N^(5)-methylcytosine(m5 C)modifications on RNA,direct RNA sequencing(DRS)using the latest Oxford Nanopore Technology was applied to analyze the transcriptome of six tissues in rice.Approximately 94 million reads were generated,with an average length ranging from 619 nt to 1013 nt,and a total of 45,707 transcripts across 34,763 genes were detected.Expression profiles of transcripts at the isoform level were quantified among tissues.Transcriptome-wide mapping of m^(6)A and m5 C demonstrated that both modifications exhibited tissue-specific characteristics.The transcripts with m^(6)A modifications tended to be modified by m5 C,and the transcripts with modifications presented higher expression levels along with shorter poly(A)tails than transcripts without modifications,suggesting the complexity of gene expression regulation.Gene Ontology analysis demonstrated that m^(6)A-and m5 C-modified transcripts were involved in central metabolic pathways related to the life cycle,with modifications on the target genes selected in a tissue-specific manner.Furthermore,most modified sites were located within quantitative trait loci that control important agronomic traits,highlighting the value of cloning functional loci.The results provide new insights into the expression regulation complexity and data resource of the transcriptome and epitranscriptome,improving our understanding of the rice genome.

Advances in DNA sequencing technology have sparked a genomics revolution,driving breakthroughs in plant genetics and crop breeding.Recently,the focus has shifted from cataloging genetic diversity in plants to exploring their functional significance and delivering beneficial alleles for crop improvement.This transformation has been facilitated by the increasing adoption of whole-genome resequencing.In this review,we summarize the current progress of population-based genome resequencing studies and how these studies affect crop breeding.A total of 187 land plants from 163 countries have been resequenced,comprising 54413 accessions.As part of resequencing efforts 367 traits have been surveyed and 86 genome-wide association studies have been conducted.Economically important crops,particularly cereals,vegetables,and legumes,have dominated the resequencing efforts,leaving a gap in 49 orders,including Lycopodiales,Liliales,Acorales,Austrobaileyales,and Commelinales.The resequenced germplasm is distributed across diverse geographic locations,providing a global perspective on plant genomics.We highlight genes that have been selected during domestication,or associated with agronomic traits,and form a repository of candidate genes for future research and application.Despite the opportunities for cross-species comparative genomics,many population genomic datasets are not accessible,impeding secondary analyses.We call for a more open and collaborative approach to population genomics that promotes data sharing and encourages contribution-based credit policy.The number of plant genome resequencing studies will continue to rise with the decreasing DNA sequencing costs,coupled with advances in analysis and computational technologies.This expansion,in terms of both scale and quality,holds promise for deeper insights into plant trait genetics and breeding design.

Do females influence paternal responsiveness in male prairie voles Microtus ochrogaster by increasing the salience of infant odors？

Male prairie voles become more responsive to infants following cohabitation with a female. Exposure to female sensory cues prior to offspring birth may influence male paternal tendencies by modifying his response to infant odors in particular or to odors in general. To test these hypotheses, males were housed with an unfamiliar female or a same-sex sibling for 13 days then examined for their response towards either live infants or infant-like inanimate objects covered with one of three odors: water, infant, sub-adult. We recorded the number of males that retrieved and manipulated the infants or odor-covered objects and measured the frequency and duration of time males spent attending to them or engaged in other non-social activities. Female-Cohabited males approached the container holding infant-odor covered objects faster than Male-Cohabited males, but showed no differences in time spent manipulating those objects. Males in both groups spent more time manipulating live infants than odor-covered objects. However, Female-Cohabited subjects were more likely to manipulate odor-covered objects as well as live infants than Male-Cohabited subjects. Additionally, the frequency of self-grooming in Female-Cohabited males was higher for water-covered objects compared to Male-Cohabited males. In presence of water and live infants, Female-Cohabited males groomed themselves with greater frequency than in presence of infant odor or sub-adult odor. The data suggest that female cues increase the male’s sensitivity to infant odors and enhance the salience of non-social odors.

Normal cells are hijacked by cancer cells forming together heterogeneous tumor masses immersed in aberrant communication circuits that facilitate tumor growth and dissemination.Besides the well characterized angiogenic effect of some tumor-derived factors;others,such as BDNF,recruit peripheral nerves and leukocytes.The neurogenic switch,activated by tumor-derived neurotrophins and extracellular vesicles,attracts adjacent peripheral fibers(autonomic/sensorial)and neural progenitor cells.Strikingly,tumor-associated nerve fibers can guide cancer cell dissemination.Moreover,IL-1β,CCL2,PGE2,among other chemotactic factors,attract natural immunosuppressive cells,including T regulatory(Tregs),myeloid-derived suppressor cells(MDSCs),and M2 macrophages,to the tumor microenvironment.These leukocytes further exacerbate the aberrant communication circuit releasing factors with neurogenic effect.Furthermore,cancer cells directly evade immune surveillance and the antitumoral actions of natural killer cells by activating immunosuppressive mechanisms elicited by heterophilic complexes,joining cancer and immune cells,formed by PD-L1/PD1 and CD80/CTLA-4 plasma membrane proteins.Altogether,nervous and immune cells,together with fibroblasts,endothelial,and bone-marrow-derived cells,promote tumor growth and enhance the metastatic properties of cancer cells.Inspired by the demonstrated,but restricted,power of anti-angiogenic and immune cell-based therapies,preclinical studies are focusing on strategies aimed to inhibit tumor-induced neurogenesis.Here we discuss the potential of anti-neurogenesis and,considering the interplay between nervous and immune systems,we also focus on anti-immunosuppression-based therapies.Small molecules,antibodies and immune cells are being considered as therapeutic agents,aimed to prevent cancer cell communication with neurons and leukocytes,targeting chemotactic and neurotransmitter signaling pathways linked to perineural invasion and metastasis.

Water use efficiency in an arid watershed: a case study

Integrated Water Resource Management （IWRM） becomes increasingly important in arid watersheds, where water resources are scarce and demands are rising under increased population pressure. In this case study, we present the results from the Elqui Valley in Chile, where water resources are shared between agriculture, mining operations, hydropower generation and drinking water for nearby cities. An IWRM model was applied to visualize water resources distribution in the catchment and determine irrigation and water use efficiencies. After calibration with observed surface and groundwater measurements, the model showed large differ- ences in efficiencies between different irrigation sectors. Most notably, irrigation sectors with the highest irrigation security, i.e., higher water rights per hectare, were characterized with lower water use efficiencies. Frequent water deficits were present in sec- tors downstream of the main reservoir, which was related to limited water rights per hectare, lower irrigation efficiencies and higher water demands due to larger agricultural areas. In subsequent scenario analyses, the model was used to evaluate the impact of improved irrigation and water use efficiencies in these downstream sectors, to confirm an important reduction in water deficits, except for drought years when surface water resources are insufficient. In a third scenario, groundwater resources were allowed to compensate for water deficits, effectively reducing these in most irrigation sectors, especially during droughts. Expansion of the current agricultural area by 37% was evaluated, as a future scenario, and was found to be unsustainable, as aquifer levels are low- ered to such levels that make annual recharge insufficient.

Background:Malnutrition and malaria are both significant causes of morbidity and mortality in African children.However,the extent of their spatial comorbidity remains unexplored and an understanding of their spatial correlation structure would inform improvement of integrated interventions.We aimed to determine the spatial correlation between both wasting and low mid upper arm circumference(MUAC)and falciparum malaria among Somalian children aged 6-59 months.Methods:Data were from 49227 children living in 888 villages between 2007 to 2010.We developed a Bayesian geostatistical shared component model in order to determine the common spatial distributions of wasting and falciparum malaria;and low-MUAC and falciparum malaria at 1×1 km spatial resolution.Results:The empirical correlations with malaria were 0.16 and 0.23 for wasting and low-MUAC respectively.Shared spatial residual effects were statistically significant for both wasting and low-MUAC.The posterior spatial relative risk was highest for low-MUAC and malaria(range:0.19 to 5.40)and relatively lower between wasting and malaria(range:0.11 to 3.55).Hotspots for both wasting and low-MUAC with malaria occurred in the South Central region in Somalia.Conclusions:The findings demonstrate a relationship between nutritional status and falciparum malaria parasitaemia,and support the use of the relatively simpler MUAC measurement in surveys.Shared spatial distribution and distinct hotspots present opportunities for targeted seasonal chemoprophylaxis and other forms of malaria prevention integrated within nutrition programmes.

The Use of Eucalyptus Activated Biocarbon for Water Treatment-Adsorption Processes

A biocarbon after activation process showed the removal percentage of 92% of methylene blue in solution, the equilibrium parameter—RL value was in the interval from 0 to 1, with 46% of surface coverage degree. The Freundlich constant (n) was higher than 1 as an indication of the physical adsorption process. The Radlich-Peterson calculations obtained the higher R2 value which g constant near 1, a high similarity with Langmuir model. Temkin constant B1 was a positive indication of endothermic process. All calculations provided favorable results for the use of activated biocarbon for dye removing and possible for other organic substances.

Design and Implementation of Mobile Portal for Kenyan Pastoralists

A mobile portal is an internet gateway that provides online services primarily accessed via mobiles and other handheld devices. Mobile portals are part of web 3.0 that is starting to revolutionize online services. Such portals can help pastoralists in Kenya access essential information and marketing services online. The aim of the study was to design and implement a mobile portal that will help Kenyan pastoralists improve their yields. The study adopted systems development life cycle (SDLC) methodology to design, implement and test the portal and used structured interviews and observation to collect user requirements. The portal was coded in J2ME, JSP and SQL languages and developed using Java Development Kit (JDK), Sun Wireless Toolkit, Lightweight User Interface Toolkit (LWUIT), Struts, Tomcat and MySQL. The outcome of the study was the mobile portal successfully developed, tested and deployed.
