Novel triblock copolymers of poly (L-lactide)-poly (ethylene glycol)-sebacate-poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (L-lactide) were synthesized by Ring-Opening Polymerization of different ratios of L-lactide with other three pre-prepared poly (ethylene glycol)-sebacate-poly (ethylene glycol) polymers, coded A, B and C which had different poly (ethyleneglycol) chain lengths. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR and 1H NmR spectroscopy, which indicated that the reaction of ROP took place and led to producing nine triblock copolymers having new different lactide chain lengths (n = 10, 25 and 50), AL10, AL25, AL50,BL10, BL25, BL50, CL10, CL25, and CL50. Nine polymer networks were also prepared from copolymers with sodium alginate S1 - S9 and finally mixed with a solution of hydroxyl ethyl cellulose to form SH1 - SH9.

In a bid to make slow release formulations of imazaquin, the herbicide was encapsulated in starch and chitosan beads reinforced with alginate. The beads were characterized using SEm, DSC and FTIR. Two types of formulations were made by extrusion into 0.25 m calcium chloride solution: chitosan/alginate (LNCI) and starch/alginate (LNSI) beads, and the third was by gelatinization of starch at 75?C (LNSI2). Findings showed highly porous spherical beads, the starch/alginate beads bigger and less porous than the chitosan/alginate beads with diameters of 2.53 ± 0.01 and 2.31 ± 0.01 mm;porosity of 57.58% ± 0.2% and 81.28% ± 0.2% and swelling of 34.91% ± 0.2% and 80.35% ± 0.2%, respectively. FTIR revealed a reduction in intensity of the carboxylate peaks of alginate and the peak at 1058 cm?1, present in the FTIR of the matrices, is shifted to lower wave-numbers in the formulations, signifying interactions between the formulation components that make for good slow release. The DSC thermograms of all formulations showed evidence of interaction of imazaquin carboxylate group with the N-atoms of the macromolecules, which is indicative of reduced crystallinity of imazaquin.

In line with global efforts towards sustainable agriculture, the use of starch modified with alginate in the preparation of slow release formulations of the herbicide trifluralin was investigated. Trifluralin was encapsulated in starch-alginate beads, and the resulting slow release formulations (SRFs) characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEm) and Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Herbicide release from the SRFs was studied in water and compared to release of technical grade trifluralin. Three sets of formulations were made by extrusion into 0.25 m calcium chloride solution: starch/alginate (SSTRF), amylose starch/alginate (ASSTRF) and amylose starch/alginate/groundnut oil (ASTRGNO) beads, and the fourth was from gelatinized starch at 75?C (SSTRF2). The results showed highly porous spherical beads, the amylose/alginate beads bigger and less porous than the starch/alginate beads with diameters of 2.79 ± 0.01 and 2.37 ± 0.01 mm;porosity of 54.67 ± 0.2 and 60.59% ± 0.2% and swelling of 54.09 ± 0.2 and 61.22% ± 0.2%, respectively. All sets of beads exhibited reduced crystallinity of trifluralin. FTIR revealed a shift to lower wavelength of the carbonyl stretching vibrations from 1750 to 1725 cm–1 and a reduction in intensity of the carboxylate peaks of alginate, suggesting interactions between the formulation components that make for good slow release. 96% of technical grade trifluralin (TGTRF) was released into a 50:50 pH 6.5 Buffer/ methanol aqueous medium in 24 hrs. However, for the starch/TRF formulation, SSTRF, only 9.33% herbicide was released after 24 hrs and 34.94% after 672 hrs (28 days). The amylose starch/TRF formulation released 13.61% herbicide in 24 hrs and 46.95% in 672 hrs, a 12% increase in release of TRF over the starch formulation. Encapsulation in starch produced 65% slow release of TRF and gelatinization achieved 84% retardation. Use of amylose starch as matrix caused 53.15% delay and addition of groundnut oil resulted in 8

Chemical fractionation of toxic metals (As, Cd and Zn) along the soil profile at waste dumpsites in military formations for dry and wet seasons using Tessier’s sequential extraction procedure was determined using AAS techniques. The order of yield across the fractions was mainly: exchangeable (F1) 2) 3) 4) 5). Statistical analysis (p m dumpsites A and B of each sampling station. However, the variation between the dumpsites and control was significant (p > 0.05) in most stations. The pollution index was assessed using the degree of contamination (Cd), the modified degree of contamination (mCd), potential ecological risk and mobility factor. The Cd indicated that NFB top soil was considerably contaminated (16.3) while the soils (20 - 40 and 40 - 80 cm) recorded moderate (13.6) and low (5.60) contaminations respectively. Top soil of NSm was moderately contaminated while the contamination status of NPS, NFB and SFB waste dump soils across the depths was “low”. The mCd index for NFB dump soil was “moderate” (2.33) and subsoils (20 - 40 and 40 - 80 cm) were “low” (1.94) and “Nil to very low” (0.800) respectively. The mCd for the other three dumpsites was “Nil to very low” except the top soil of NSm which was “low”. The order of the toxic metals mobility in the studied soils using the mobility factor (mf) for dry and wet seasons was Cd > As > Zn and Zn > Cd > As respectively.

Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a challenging medical problem, especially in cardiac surgery patients. There is a lack of studies evaluating the rate of and outcomes of SSIs following cardiac surgeries in Saudi Arabia. Aims: This study aimed to determine the incidence of SSIs after adult cardiac surgeries that were done in madinah Cardiac Center, Saudi Arabia. Further, to identify the outcomes and risk factors contributing to death among surgical site infection patients. methods: This was a 6-year, single-center, retrospective cohort study that included 93 consecutive patients who underwent adult cardiac surgery between August 2016 and August 2022. All adult patients aged 18 years or older who had clinical evidence of postoperative surgical wound infection were included. Preoperative, operative, and postoperative data (early and late) were collected from medical records. microbiological culture reports and clinical outcomes were also recorded. Results: The study revealed a 9.1% (93/1021) incidence rate of SSIs. Of the 93 patients with SSIs, 60 had superficial incisional infections and 33 had deep infections with incidence rates of 5.9% and 3.2%, respectively. In-hospital mortality due to SSI was recorded in 4 out of 93 patients with an incidence rate of 4.3%. There was a significant association between the in-hospital mortality and the type of SSIs (p = 0.014). All non-survivors had deep SSIs. The type of cardiac surgery also showed a significant association with the in-hospital mortality (p = 0.017). Furthermore, the median duration of antibiotic administration was significantly longer in the non-survivors than in the survivors (72.5 vs 17, respectively, p Conclusions: In conclusion, the incidence of surgical wound infections following cardiac surgery is not low (9.1%);of which 3.2% were deep infections. Introduction. mycosis fungoides is a lymphoma, the classical clinical form of which involves erythematosquamous lesions. However, it can present various atypical aspects: hyper pigmentation or hypo pigmentation, suggestive of pyoderma gangrenosum or ichtyosis. We report a case of mycosis fungoides, unusual in its presentation in the form of centrifugal annular erythema. Observation. A 78 year-old man had developed a parapsoriasis in plaques for more than 20 years. In may 2002 he consulted because of the recent infiltration of one of the plaques, without concomitant pruritus. The clinical examination revealed 3 lesions of the popliteal groove of the right groin and the left cheek suggestive of centrifugal annular erythema. Histology, revealing Pautrier microabscesses, was compatible with the diagnosis of mycosis fungoides. Evolution was marked by the spontaneous regression of the plaque on the face and remission of the other two plaques after local treatment with chloromethin and topical corticosteroids. Nevertheless, new plaques appeared despite continued treatment, combined with PUVA therapy sessions. Discussion. When searching the literature, we only found one other case of mycosis fungoides, the clinical aspect of which was a centrifugal annular erythema, but in which the histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mycosis fungoides. Our case report is also unusual in the clinical regression of the lesion on the face, without treatment; this has only been reported in two cases. mycosis fungoides can appear in various clinical forms. The centrifugal annular erythema form is rare, but this diagnosis should be evoked.

纳米有机硅微球具有较小的负表面电荷,较大的比表面积以及良好的生物相容性等特点,也因此在光学[1]、功能材料[2]以及生命科学[3]领域具有潜在的应用。本文中我们报道了一种非常简单的溶胶-凝胶法,能够直接在水相中制备了具有高胶体稳定性的单分散有机硅微球。如图1所示,在过程1中,我们将L-精氨酸(L-arginine)溶解在水中作为催化剂,之后将正硅酸乙酯(TEOS)和甲基丙烯酰氧丙基三甲氧基硅烷(mPS)混合加入形成两相,在60℃水浴下进行反应,TEOS和mPS完全反应完后得到了单分散有机硅微球。微球大小可以通过TEOS和mPS的比例进行调控,随着mPS的增加(04.8mol%),微球大小能从30nm增大到800nm。由于mPS中的有机链段被包裹在微球中,在经过高温煅烧后,能够得到介孔二氧化硅纳米颗粒。对于mPS占10mol%的体系,纳米粒子的比表面积从煅烧前的27 m g增大到煅烧后的657m g。过程2则结合了皮克林乳液和溶胶-凝胶法得到具有核壳结构的有机硅微球。首先采用TEOS为硅源在L-arginine催化下形成15nm的超细纳米二氧化硅,之后在体系中迅速加入mPS。强力搅拌使mPS液滴分散,纳米二氧化硅颗粒吸附在mPS液滴表面起到乳化剂作用是液滴变得更加细小而稳定。之后降低搅拌速度,再加入TEOS形成两相体系,TEOS在液滴表面进行生长并形成二氧化硅壳层。所得到核壳结构有机硅微球在高温煅烧后形成了中空介孔二氧化硅微球。对于两种过程而言,mPS的用量都是控制微球大小和体系稳定性的关键。这种方法在纯水体系中的药物或单体负载方面有潜在的应用,并且不需要加入有机溶剂或乳化剂。

Background. Dermatomyositis is a rare and serious inflammatory connective tissue disease characterized by a typical cutaneous rash and myopathy. Amyopathic dermatomyositis is a particular form of dermatomyositis involving only cutaneous signs and without myopathy present for over 2 years. Patients and methods. A 48 year-old woman presented with a 3-year history of cutaneous rash without myopathy characteristic of amyopathic dermatomyositis. Clinical examination revealed extensive axillary adenopathy, histological examination of which suggested secondary melanoma. The patient reported a black nevus in the axillary area that had disappeared 1 year earlier. Curettage of the lymph node was negative and the patient was treated with interferon (3m 3 times a week)-. Regression of the cutaneous signs was noted. Discussion. The data, there have been no other reports of paraneoplastic amyopathic dermatomyositis associated with regression of primary melanoma. The literature contains few reports of dermatomyositis associated with melanoma. Amyopathic dermatomyositis may be associated with malignancy.
