The short and long-term effect of polystyrene nanoplastics on nitrifying sludge at high nitrite concentrations

The effect of nanoplastics(NPs)on nitrite oxidation bacteria(NOB)community in treating high-strength wastewater remains unclear,which seriously affects the stability of nitrogen removal process.In this study,highly active nitrifying sludge was enriched and exposed to 50nm polystyrene NPs(PS-NPs)for short-term(1,100,500,and 1000 mg/L,1.5 hr)and long-term(1,10,100 mg/L,40 days)at high nitrite concentration.In contrast to previous studies,our results showed that the exposures to PS-NPs had little effect on nitrifying performances.After long-term exposure,the protein/polysaccharide ratios in extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)were positively correlated with PS-NPs concentrations(0.78–0.99).The produced reactive oxygen species(ROS)were gradually removed,and PS-NPs higher than 10 mg/L caused damage to membrane integrity.Long-term exposure for 40 days increased the community diversity and caused significant differences between the control and exposed communities.The control group were dominated by Nitrobacter and Exiguobacterium,while the exposure group was dominated by Bacillus,Mycobacterium,and Nitrospira.A noticeable shift in the NOB community from Nitrobacter(26.5%to 3.4%)to Nitrospira(1.61%to 14.27%)was observed.A KEGG analysis indicated a decrease in cell growth and death,cell motility and energy metabolism.It appeared that NOB could adapt to PS-NPs stress through enhanced secretion and removal of oxidative damage.Overall,this study provided new insights into the response mechanism of NOB to PS-NPs exposure.

Analysis of the Influence of Geometrical Parameters on the Performance of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

A suitable channel structure can lead to efficient gas distribution and significantly improve the power density of fuel cells.In this study,the influence of two channel design parameters is investigated,namely,the ratio of the channel width to the bipolar plate ridge width(i.e.,the channel ridge ratio)and the channel depth.The impact of these parameters is evaluated with respect to the flow pattern,the gas composition distribution,the temperature field and the fuel cell output capability.The results show that a decrease in the channel ridge ratio and an increase in the channel depth can effectively make the distributions of velocity,temperature and concentration more uniform in each channel and improve the output capability of the fuel cell.An increase in the channel ridge ratio and depth obviously reduces the flow resistance and improves the flow characteristics.

Numerous studies have shown that cell replacement therapy can replenish lost cells and rebuild neural circuitry in animal models of Parkinson’s disease.Transplantation of midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cells is a promising treatment for Parkinson’s disease.However,transplanted cells can be injured by mechanical damage during handling and by changes in the transplantation niche.Here,we developed a one-step biomanufacturing platform that uses small-aperture gelatin microcarriers to produce beads carrying midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cells.These beads allow midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cell differentiation and cryopreservation without digestion,effectively maintaining axonal integrity in vitro.Importantly,midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cell bead grafts showed increased survival and only mild immunoreactivity in vivo compared with suspended midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cell grafts.Overall,our findings show that these midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cell beads enhance the effectiveness of neuronal cell transplantation.

Since the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was the first Winter Olympics in history held in continental winter monsoon climate conditions across complex terrain areas,there is a deficiency of relevant research,operational techniques,and experience.This made providing meteorological services for this event particularly challenging.The China Meteorological Administration(CMA)Earth System Modeling and Prediction Centre,achieved breakthroughs in research on short-and medium-term deterministic and ensemble numerical predictions.Several key technologies crucial for precise winter weather services during the Winter Olympics were developed.A comprehensive framework,known as the Operational System for High-Precision Weather Forecasting for the Winter Olympics,was established.Some of these advancements represent the highest level of capabilities currently available in China.The meteorological service provided to the Beijing 2022 Games also exceeded previous Winter Olympic Games in both variety and quality.This included achievements such as the“100-meter level,minute level”downscaled spatiotemporal resolution and forecasts spanning 1 to 15 days.Around 30 new technologies and over 60 kinds of products that align with the requirements of the Winter Olympics Organizing Committee were developed,and many of these techniques have since been integrated into the CMA’s operational national forecasting systems.These accomplishments were facilitated by a dedicated weather forecasting and research initiative,in conjunction with the preexisting real-time operational forecasting systems of the CMA.This program represents one of the five subprograms of the WMO’s high-impact weather forecasting demonstration project(SMART2022),and continues to play an important role in their Regional Association(RA)II Research Development Project(Hangzhou RDP).Therefore,the research accomplishments and meteorological service experiences from this program will be carried forward into forthcoming highimpact weather forecasting activities.This article provides an

Effect of Mn content on microstructure and properties of AlCrCuFeMnx high-entropy alloy

AlCrCuFeMnx(x=0,0.5,1,1.5,and 2)high-entropy alloys were prepared using the vacuum arc melting technology.The microstructure and mechanical properties of AlCrCuFeMnxwere analyzed and tested by XRD,SEM,TEM,nanoindentation,and electronic universal testing.The results indicate that the AlCrCuFeMnxhigh-entropy alloy exhibits a dendritic structure,consisting of dendrites with a BCC structure,interdendrite regions with an FCC structure,and precipitates with an ordered BCC structure that form within the dendrite.Manganese(Mn)has a strong affinity for dendritic,interdendritic,and precipitate structures,allowing it to easily enter these areas.With an increase in Mn content,the size of the precipitated nanoparticles in the dendritic region initially increases and then decreases.Similarly,the area fraction initially decreases and then increases.Additionally,the alloy’s strength and wear resistance decrease,while its plasticity increases.The Al Cr Cu Fe Mn1.5alloy boasts excellent mechanical properties,including a hardness of 360 HV and a wear rate of 2.4×10^(-5)mm^(3)·N^(-1)·mm^(-1).It also exhibits impressive yield strength,compressive strength,and deformation rates of 960 MPa,1,700 MPa,and 27.5%,respectively.

FRAGIliTY ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES WITH TUNED VISCOUS MASS daMPERS UNDER NEAR-FAULT PULSE-TYPE GROUND MOTIONS

A series of incremental dynamic analysis (Ida) were conducted on 6-storey 3-bay steel frames subjected to selected near-fault pulse-type ground motions. The frames are installed with tuned viscous mass dampers (TVMDs), viscous dampers (VDs) or no dampers, respectively. The seismic fragility curves corresponding to different damage states were obtained based on Ida results. The comparison of the seismic fragility of structures between TVMDs and VDs shows that the reliabilities of the main structure against different damage states are improved significantly with the addition of inerter element. Given the same damping ratio, the structure with TVMDs exhibits excellent improvement in seismic resistant capacity and low damage failure probability of the main structure against different damage states. With the increase of mass ratio, the improvement in structural performance due to TVMD does not decrease with the increase of nonlinearity. And the seismic mitigation effect of the structure is stable during the whole process including elasticity, elastic-plasticity and collapse. Furthermore, three sets of near-fault ground motion records with different pulse periods were selected for time history analysis, and the seismic mitigation effect of TVMD under near-fault pulse-type ground motions was discussed. The results show that under the near-fault pulse-type ground motions, TVMD does not always achieve the damping enhancement of the damping element, and the performance of the damper is related to the characteristics of ground motions. Compared with the enhanced structure with VDs and the original benchmark model, TVMD system reduces the input energy of the main structure when T1/Tp≥2. However, it has lower capacity of energy dissipation and the effect of damping enhancement could not be realized. When T1/Tp © 2024 Tsinghua University. All rights reserved.

High-precision parallel computing model of solute transport based on GPU acceleration

The scenario simulation analysis of water environmental emergencies is very important for risk prevention and control,and emergency response.To quickly and accurately simulate the transport and diffusion process of high-intensity pollutants during sudden environmental water pollution events,in this study,a high-precision pollution transport and diffusion model for unstructured grids based on Compute Unified Device Architecture(CUda)is proposed.The finite volume method of a total variation diminishing limiter with the Kong proposed r-factor is used to reduce numerical diffusion and oscillation errors in the simulation of pollutants under sharp concentration conditions,and graphics processing unit acceleration technology is used to improve computational efficiency.The advection diffusion process of the model is verified numerically using two benchmark cases,and the efficiency of the model is evaluated using an engineering example.The results demonstrate that the model perform well in the simulation of material transport in the presence of sharp concentration.Additionally,it has high computational efficiency.The acceleration ratio is 46 times the single-thread acceleration effect of the original model.The efficiency of the accelerated model meet the requirements of an engineering application,and the rapid early warning and assessment of water pollution accidents is achieved.

Dear Editor,The Cretaceous-Paleogene(K-Pg)mass extinction precipitated one of the most profound restructurings of biodiversity in recent geological history.Despite the extinction of many iconic groups,particularly the non-avian dinosaurs,there is emerging evidence that previously overlooked taxa experienced stark morphological and evolutionary stasis.In this study,we report both adult and larva of beetles of the genus Loricera preserved in mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber(Figure 1),which display striking similarity to extant congeners,indicating a stasis of their specialized feeding behavior persisting at least 100 million years.

Introduction The cryopreservation of human oocytes and embryos is a key factor in assisted reproductive technology(ART).Based on the most recent guidelines and consensus[1-8]and in combination with clinical practice,the Chinese Association of Reproductive Medicine has called on experts to summarize the technical process and details pertaining to the vitrification of human oocytes and embryos.The intention is to provide a set of comprehensive and systematic guidelines for vitrification and improve the quality of services offered at reproductive centers.
