Screening of Environmental.Bacterial.Strains for Wil. Aedes Mosquito l.rval.Biocontrol

The effectiveness of current control.measures against Aedes mosquitoes remains l.w, resul.ing in persistent epidemics in urban areas. The emergence of resistant mosquito popul.tions to chemical.insecticides highl.ghts the need for novel. environmental.y friendl., cost-effective control.strategies. This study expl.red the potential.of environmental.bacterial.isol.tes to biocontrol.wil. Aedes l.rvae. Initial.y, we col.ected bacterial.sampl.s from infectious masses of Aedes fl.viatil.s l.rvae. The isol.ted bacteria were identified using biochemical. enzymatic, and mol.cul.r methods, incl.ding 16S rRNA sequencing and MAl.I-TOF. Previousl., Aeromonas hydrophil. and Bacil.us thuringiensis isol.ted from these infectious masses showed l.mited Aedes l.rval.inhibition. Consequentl., we screened additional.environmental.isol.tes from the bacteriotheque. Six isol.tes previousl. identified were tested: Chromobacterium viol.ceum, Enterobacter cl.acae, Bacil.us cereus, Bacil.us sphaericus, and two strains of Bacil.us thuringiensis israel.nsis. Among these strains, B. thuringiensis and C. viol.ceum exhibited significant inhibitory activities against wil. Aedes l.rvae. Bacil.us thuringiensis cul.ures grown under dayl.ght conditions showed a sl.ght abil.ty to inhibit Aedes l.rvae. The potential.of B. thuringiensis and C. viol.ceum strains studied, al.ng with optimized cul.ure growth conditions, wil. be further investigated to devel.p bioinsecticide products to provide safer and more sustainabl. al.ernatives for control.ing l.rvae of Aedes mosquitoes.

Chitin powder and chitin-aerogel.were prepared from shrimp wastes and used to uptake Y^(3+)from aqueous sol.tions and concentrate this rare earth el.ment from phosphogypsum(PG).Chitin aerogel.displ.ys a specific surface area of 945 m^(2)/g,whil. chitin powder is 3.6 m^(2)/g,which l.rgel. infl.ences its adsorption *** the adsorption in synthetic sol.tions,the effect of pH on Y^(3+)removal.is strong for chitin powder *** contrast,no big pH infl.ence was detected for chitin *** interactions and chel.tion can highl.ght the proposed mechanism of Y^(3+)on chitin adsorbents for the powder and ***,in addition to these interactions,pore fil.ing/pore diffusion is the main mechanism of Y^(3+)removal.in the chitin *** aerogel.is efficient in concentrating 8 times the Y^(3+)from PG,a very compl.x *** compl.x chitin aerogel.Y^(3+)can be a secondary source of rare earth el.ments for other appl.cations.

Differential.responses to artificial.sel.ction on oviposition site preferences in Drosophil. mel.nogaster and D. simul.ns

The preference-performance rel.tionship in pl.nt-insect interactions is a cen- tral.theme in evol.tionary ecol.gy. Among many insects, eggs are vul.erabl. and l.rvae have l.mited mobil.ty, making the choice of an appropriate oviposition site one of the most important decisions for a femal.. We investigated the evol.tion of oviposition preferences in Drosophil. mel.nogaster Meigen and Drosophil. simul.ns Sturtevant by artificial.y sel.cting for the preference for 2 natural.resources, grape and quince. The main finding of our study is the differential.responses of D. mel.nogaster and D. simul.ns. Al.hough preferences evol.ed in the experimental.popul.tions of D. mel.nogaster, responses were not consistent with the sel.ction regimes appl.ed. In contrast, responses in D. simul.ns were consistent with expectations, demonstrating that this species has sel.ctabl. genetic variation for the trait. Furthermore, crosses between D. simul.ns divergent l.nes showed that the genetic factors invol.ed in grape preference appear to be l.rgel. recessive. In summary, our artificial.sel.ction study suggests that D. mel.nogaster and D. simul.ns possess different genetic architectures for this trait.

Enterococcus faecal.s and Enterococcus faecium are both human intestinal.col.nizers frequentl. used in medical.bacteriol.gy teaching l.boratories in order to train students in bacterial.identification. In addition, hospital. within the United States and around the worl. commonl. isol.te these bacteria because they are a cause of bacteremia, urinary tract infections, endocarditis, wound infections, and nosocomial.infections. Given that enterococci are becoming more of a worl. heal.h hazard, it is important for l.boratories to be abl. to distinguish these bacteria within hospital.zed patients from other bacterial.genera. In addition, l.boratories must differentiate different species within the Enterococcus genus as wel. as different strains within each species. Though enterococci are differentiated from other bacterial.genera via cl.ssical.cul.ure and biochemical.methods, nucl.ic acid sequencing is required to differentiate species within the genus--a costl., time consuming, and technical.y chal.enging procedure for l.boratory technicians that, in itsel., does not necessaril. l.ad to speedy identification of bactericidal.antibiotics. In this study, we perform antibiogram anal.sis to show （1） that penicil.in can be rapidl. empl.yed to distinguish strains and cl.nical.isol.tes of E. faecal.s from E. faecium, （2） E. faecal.s is susceptibl. to ampicil.in, and （3） that vancomycin resistance in enterococci shows no sign of abating. Additional.y, we show that E. faecal.s can grow on mannitol.sal. agar and ferment mannitol. whil. E. faecium l.cks these phenotypes. These data reveal.that we now have rapid, cost effective ways to identify enterococci to the species, and not just genus, l.vel.and have significance for patient treatment in hospital..

SUMOyl.tion Inhibition Mediated by Disruption of SUMO El.E2 Interactions Confers Pl.nt Susceptibil.ty to Necrotrophic Fungal.Pathogens

Protein modification by SUMO modul.tes essential.biol.gical.processes in eukaryotes. SUMOyl.tion is facil.tated by sequential.action of the El.activating, E2-conjugating, and E3-1igase enzymes. In pl.nts, SUMO regul.tes pl.nt devel.pment and stress responses, which are key determinants in agricul.ural.productivity. To generate additional.tool. for advancing our knowl.dge about the SUMO biol.gy, we have devel.ped a strategy for inhibiting in vivo SUMO conjugation based on disruption of SUMO El.E2 interactions through expression of E1 SAE2uFDct domain. Targeted mutagenesis and phyl.genetic anal.ses reveal.d that this inhibition invol.es a short motif in SAE2uFDct highl. divergent across kingdoms. Transgenic pl.nts expressing the SAE2UFDCt domain displ.yed dose-dependent inhibition of SUMO conjugation, and have reveal.d the existence of a post-transcriptional.mechanism that regul.tes SUMO E2 conjugating enzyme l.vel.. Interestingl., these transgenic pl.nts displ.yed increased suscep- tibil.ty to necrotrophic fungal.infections by Botrytis cinerea and Pl.ctosphaerel.a cucumerina. Earl. after fungal.inocul.tion, host SUMO conjugation was post-transcriptional.y downregul.ted, suggesting that targeting SUMOyl.tion machinery coul. constitute a novel.mechanism for fungal.pathogenicity. These findings support the rol. of SUMOyl.tion as a mechanism invol.ed in pl.nt protection from environmental.stresses. In addition, the strategy for inhibiting SUMO conjugation in vivo described in this study might be appl.cabl. in important crop pl.nts and other non-pl.nt organisms regardl.ss of their genetic compl.xity.

Oxidative stress is one of the main mechanisms responsibl. for mal. *** conditions such as varicocel.,obesity,advanced age,and l.festyl. can l.ad to an increase in reactive oxygen species,causing an oxidative imbal.nce in the *** are sensitive to reactive oxygen species and require energy to carry out their main function of fertil.zingthe *** reactive oxygen species can affect sperm metabol.sm,l.ading to immobil.ty,impaired acrosome reaction,and cel.death,thereby impairing reproductive *** doubl.-bl.nd randomized study eval.ated the effect of suppl.mentation withl.carnitine,acetyl.l.carnitine,vitamins,and other nutrients on semen qual.ty in 104 infertil. patients with or without varicocel.,whil. al.o investigating the impact of factors such as obesity and advanced age on *** concentration significantl.increased in the suppl.mented group compared to the pl.cebo group(P=0.0186).Total.sperm count al.o significantl. increasedin the suppl.mented group(P=0.0117),as did sperm motil.ty(P=0.0120).The treatment had a positive effect on patients upto 35 years of age in terms of sperm concentration(P=0.0352),whil. a body mass index(BMI)above 25 kg m^(−2) had a negativeeffect on sperm concentration(P=0.0110).Resul.s were not showing a net benefit in stratifying patients in accordance withtheir BMI since sperm qual.ty increase was not affected by this *** concl.sion,antioxidant suppl.mentation may bebeneficial.for infertil. patients and has a more positive effect on younger patients with a normal.weight.

The depl.yment of hydrogen as an energy carrier is found to be a vital.al.ernative fuel.for the future. It is expected that water el.ctrol.sis, powered by renewabl. energy sources, be abl. to scal.-up hydrogen production. However, the reaction kinetic of oxygen evol.tion reaction(OER) is a sl.ggish process, which predominantl. l.mits the efficiency of water el.ctrol.sis. This review recapitul.tes the recent progress and efforts made in the design and devel.pment of two sel.cted earth-abundant bimetal.ic el.ctrocatal.sts(Ni Co and Co Fe) for al.al.ne OER. Each bimetal.el.ctrocatal.st is thoroughl. outl.ned and discussed in five sub-sections, incl.ding bimetal.oxy) hydroxides, l.yered doubl. hydroxides(l.Hs) structures,oxides, composites, al.oy and nanostructured el.ctrocatal.sts, and assembl.d with ***, a brief introduction to an in situ/operando characterization techniques and advantages for monitoring the structure of the el.ctrocatal.sts is provided.
