Ammonia is a key feedstock of fertilizers for farming and convenient hydrogen carrier as an emerging clean fuel,but industrial ammonium production process,Haber-Bosch reaction,is an energy-intensive process,consuming 1%–2%of global energy and producing 3%global *** nitrogen reduction reaction(NRR)is one of the most promising routes to realize highly efficient NH3 production under ambient ***,up to now,few precious-metal-free electrocatalysts with desirable catalytic performance have been *** this work,Mo2C nanodots anchored on three-dimensional ultrathin macroporous carbon(Mo2C@3DUM-C)framework is developed toward significantly enhanced nitrogen reduction *** to the special structural design of 3D ultrathin macroporous carbon and highly active and stable Mo2C toward N2 electrochemical reduction,the Mo2C@3DUM-C framework exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency of 9.5%for NH3 production at−0.20 V and the yield rate reaches 30.4µg h−1 mgMo2C−*** electrochemical characterizations reveal the enhanced electron transfer and increased electrochemical surface area in the 3D macroporous carbon ***,the Mo2C@3DUM-C electrocatalysts hold high catalytic stability after long-term NRR *** temperature-dependent yield rate of NH3 demonstrates that the activation energy of nitrogen reduction on the employed catalyst was calculated to be 28.1 kJ mol−*** proposed earth-abundant Mo2C@3DUM-C demonstrates an alternative insight into developing efficient and stable nitrogen fixation catalysts in acids as alternatives to noble metal catalysts.

The failure of the Barlin Dam in Taiwan,China offers an important case study for evaluating concepts in modeling the rapid erosion and channel recovery following intentional and unplanned dam *** present a modeling effort that applied a 1D and quasi-2D uncoupled hydraulics and sediment model(NETSTARS) to evaluate how discretization and parameterization influence thefitofbed elevationpredictions to observations following dam *** analysis evaluated the model sensitivity to sediment transport function,active layer thickness,and number of stream tubes used to define the *** indicate that a) the model is more sensitive to active layer thickness and sediment transport function than to the number of stream tubes,b) development of dam removal models are likely to benefit from varying the active layer thickness in time,and c) increased lateral discretization does not appear to improve model fit in the steep and rapidly changing river environment at our *** conclude with discussion on differences between,identifying the need for,and general use of 1D,quasi-2D,and fully 2D models in dam removal and failure analysis.

Mounting evidence is highlighting the role of the ETS factor SPDEF asa prostate tumor suppressor. In a recent paper by Pal et al., SPDEF was found to transcriptionally control the expression of ECadherin, an adhesion molecule with a crucial role in preventing metastatic spread. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. Thanks to the advent of prostatespecific antigen testing in the 1980s, many patients now present with the earliest and most curable form of the disease. Despite this fact, a nonnegligible fraction of them experiences metastatic recurrence, which is ultimately responsible for patients＇ death. The recent approval of new agents including abiraterone acetate, cabazitaxel, sipuleucdT and denosumab has significantly enriched the therapeutic opportunities for advanced prostate cancer.1 However, in order to improve future drug development and patient management, a deeper elucidation of the mechanisms of metastasis formation is of utmost importance, and surrogate bio markers able to distinguish aggressive from indolent cancers are urgently needed. The prostatederived ETS factor SPDEF （alias PDEF or hPSE） is the latest discovered member of the ETS family, a large family of 27 transcription factors sharing a conserved DNAbinding domain and involved in nor mal and pathological processes by activation or repression of a multitude of target genes.2 ETS family members have major roles in tumorigenesis, especially in prostate cancer where some of them like ERG, ETV1 and ETV4 are involved in recurrent chromosomal translocations with the prostatespecific, androgenresponsive protease TMPRSS2.3 Originally described as a prostate specific mRNA transcript, SPDEF expression is actually highly restricted to epithelial cells and has been found also in breast, colon, ovary, gas tric, and airway epithelium. Recent evidence indicates that different types of vascular stem cells （VSCs） reside within the mural layers of arteries and veins. The precise identities of these resident VSCs are still unclear; generally, postnatal vasculature contains multilineage stem cells and vascular cell lineage-specific progenitor/stem cells which may participate in both vascular repair and lesion formation. However, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. In this review, we summarize the potential molecular mechanisms, which may control the quiescence and activation of resident VSCs and highlight a notion that the differential states of resident VSCs are directly linked to vascular repair or lesion formation.

Primates have been found to differ widely in their taste perception and studies suggest that a coevolution between plant species bearing a certain taste substance and primate species feeding on these plants may contribute to such between-species differences. Considering that only platyrrhine primates, but not catarrhine or prosimian primates, share an evolutionary history with the neotrop- ical plant Stevia rebaudiana, we assessed whether members of these three primate taxa differ in their ability to perceive and/or in their sensitivity to its two quantitatively predominant sweet- tasting substances. We found that not only neotropical black-handed spider monkeys, but also paleotropical black-and-white ruffed lemurs and Western chimpanzees are clearly able to perceive stevioside and rebaudioside A. Using a two-bottle preference test of short duration, we found that Ateles geoffroyi preferred concentrations as low as 0.05 mM stevioside and 0.01 mM rebaudioside A over tap water. Taste preference thresholds of Pan troglodytes were similar to those of the spider monkeys, with 0.05 mM for stevioside and 0.03 mM for rebaudioside A, whereas Varecia variegata was slightly less sensitive with a threshold value of 0.1 mM for both substances. Thus, all three primate species are, similar to human subjects, clearly more sensitive to both steviol glycosides compared to sucrose. Only the spider monkeys displayed concentration-response curves with both stevioside and rebaudioside A which can best be described as an inverted U-shaped function sug- gesting that Ateles geoffroyi, similar to human subjects, may perceive a bitter side taste at higher concentrations of these substances. Taken together, the results of the present study do not support the notion that a co-evolution between plant and primate species may account for between-species differences in taste perception of steviol glycosides.
