Impact of Hypertension on Type 2 diabetes in Mysore Population of South India

Objective: The study aims to explore the prevalence of hypertension and its impact on Type 2 diabetes in a Mysore population of the Indian subcontinent. Methods: 636 participants volunteered for the study. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were recorded while plasma was analyzed for biochemical markers. The IdF and JNC 7 diagnostic criteria were followed to define diabetes and hypertension. Statistical Analyses: One-way analysis of variance, χ2-test and Logistic regression analysis were performed to assess differences of the mean, proportion and the independent effect of hypertension on the development of type 2 diabetes. Results: Hypertension was observed to be prevalent in 37.1% of the studied population with an insignificant gender difference. Rate of occurrence of hypertensives was found to be significantly higher in type 2 diabetes (51.9%), obese subjects (45.2%), long-term smokers (49%) and alcohol addicts (48%) than control groups. The risk of development of diabetes was significantly higher in hypertensives than normotensive. However, when creatinine and blood urea nitrogen were included in the model, the significance was nullified. Conclusions: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes and hypertension is increasing at an alarming rate. This study reveals that the significance of hypertension as a parameter in predicting the risk of type 2 diabetes was influenced by the renal function and lipid profile.

Microscopic characteristics of different fracture modes of brittle rock

Three types of rock specimens, three-point bending specimen, anti-symmetric four-point bending specimen and direct shearing specimen, were used to achieve Mode I, Mode II and mixed mode I–II fracture, respectively. Microscopic characteristics of the three fracture modes of brittle rock were studied by SEM technique in order to analyze fracture behaviors and better understand fracture mechanisms of different fracture modes of brittle rock. Test results show that the microscopic characteristics of different fracture modes correspond to different fracture mechanisms. The surface of Mode I fracture has a great number of sparse and steep slip-steps with few tearing ridges and shows strong brittleness. In the surface of Mode II fracture there exist many tearing ridges and densely distributed parallel slip-steps and it is attributed to the action of shear stress. The co-action of tensile and shear stresses results in brittle cleavage planes mixed with streamline patterns and tearing ridges in the surface of mixed mode I–II fracture. The measured Mode II fracture toughness K II C and mixed mode I–II fracture toughness K mC are larger than Mode I fracture toughness K I C · K II C is about 3.5 times K I C, and KmC is about 1.2 times K I C.

detection of Quarry Blasts in the Koyna-Warna Region, Western India

Koyna-Warna is a seismically active region, characterized by earthquakes triggered by loading of artificial water reservoirs. In this region quarrying is ongoing and sometimes the quarry blasts are confused with triggered seismic events. About 410 events around a known mining area were ob-served during January 2007-October 2013. In general the quarry blasts are carried out mostly during the day time. Based on this fact a well known method of [1] is implemented, which has the capability of detecting the areas of quarry blast activity. Also, discrimination of quarry blasts from earthquakes has been achieved by studying waveforms at key seismic stations located close to the quarrying area. Further, distinction is achieved through spectral analysis in the frequency band of 3 - 15 Hz. Ratio of day-time to night-time events, waveform pattern and spectral analysis approach confirm the presence of quarry blasts aligned south-east of the Warna reservoir.

Quantitative determination of PFC3d microscopic parameters

It is important to calibrate micro-parameters for applying partied flow code(PFC)to study mechanical characteristics and failure mechanism of rock *** design method is firstly adopted to determine the microscopic parameters of parallel-bonded particle model for three-dimensional discrete element particle flow code(PFC3d).variation ranges of microscopic of the microscopic parameters are created by analyzing the effects of microscopic parameters on macroscopic parameters(elastic modulus E,Poisson ratio v,uniaxial compressive strengthσc,and ratio of crack initial stress to uniaxial compressive strengthσci/σc)in order to obtain the actual uniform design *** calculation equations of the microscopic and macroscopic parameters of rock materials can be established by the actual uniform design table and the regression analysis and thus the PFC3d microscopic parameters can be quantitatively *** PFC3d simulated results of the intact and pre-cracked rock specimens under uniaxial and triaxial compressions(including the macroscopic mechanical parameters,stress−strain curves and failure process)are in good agreement with experimental results,which can prove the validity of the calculation equations of microscopic and macroscopic parameters.

利用墙状岩体模型可以简便地分析磁异常。在这种模型中,场源埋深约为1.25S,这里的S是在最陡侧面测量的S-S长度。墙状岩体的倾角可以用θ来计算,θ为复合磁角,可以用异常的最大幅值和最小幅值的比值求出。在存在剩磁的情况下,只有在总磁化强度的方向已知或假定了的时候,墙状岩体的倾角δ才能从θ中求出,如果倾角已知,磁化方向可以求出。按照关系式κ=0.3A/T,可以用异常的总幅值A和感应磁埸强度T来计算埸源的最小磁化率衬度值k。用这种方法已经解释了许多航磁异常。本文列举了几个磁异常以说明这种方法的适用性。

Evaluation of doppler Radar data for Assessing depth-Area Reduction Factors for the Arid Region of San Bernardino County

The doppler Radar derived rainfall data for over 150 candidate storms during 1997-2015 period, for the County of San Bernardino, California, was assessed. Eleven most significant storms were identified for detailed analysis. For these significant storms, depth-Area Reduction Factors (“dARF”) curves were developed and compared with the published curves developed and adapted by several flood control agencies for this study area. More rainfall data need to be pursued and analyzed before any correlation hypothesis is proposed.

Non-metallic electronic regulation in CuCo oxy-/thio-spinel as advanced oxygen evolution electrocatalysts

developing cost-effective and high-performance oxygen evolution reaction(OER)electrocatalysts has become the intense research on pursuing emerging renewable energy conversion,in which exploring and investigating the intrinsic nature of efficient and stable Cu Co spinel catalysts toward OER in alkaline media is highly ***,Cu1–xCo2+xO4oxy-spinel nanoflakes are fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method with the oxidation of ammonia *** the same condition,Cu1–xCo2+xS4thio-spinel nanospheres are formed without *** OER process,the as-obtained Cu1–xCo2+xO4nanoflakes and Cu1–xCo2+xS4nanospheres possess the anodic overpotential of 267 and 297 m v in alkaline media to drive the current density of 10 m A/cm^2,respectively,outperforming the state-of-the-art noble metal catalyst of RuO2.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis exhibits the higher ratio value of Co(Ⅲ)/Co(Ⅱ)in Cu1–xCo2+xO4than that in Cu1–xCo2+xS4,suggesting that the stronglyelectronegative oxygen efficiently predominates in regulating valence states of Co active sites in spinel ***,density functional theory simulation further reveals that the increased valence state of Co could accelerate the electron exchange between catalysts and oxygen adsorbates during electrocatalysis,thus contributing to the higher OER activity of Cu1–xCo2+*** work provides deep insight regarding the significance of non-metal element(O and S)in Cu Co spinel structure catalysts,as well as presents a promising approach to exploit higher performance and grasp the mechanism of various non-noblemetal spinel catalysts for water oxidation.

Characterization of Islets from Chronic Calcific Pancreatitis Patients of Tropical Region with distinct Phenotype

Background and Objective: Islet autotransplantation is performed to preserve endocrine function in patients undergoing pancreatic resections for painful chronic pancreatitis. We characterized islets isolated from chronic pancreatitis patients (CP) of tropical region. Patients and Methods: Pancreatic tissues were obtained from CP patients with and without diabetes undergoing pancreatic resections (n = 35) and brain-dead multi organ donors (n = 6;considered as controls). Islets isolated were assessed for yield, purity, viability and in vitro islet function (Glucose stimulated insulin release, GSIR) as per standard protocols. Results: Islets from CP patients without diabetes were similar to controls in yield (control 4120 - 6100 IE/g, CP 3550 - 5660 IE/g), purity (control 78% ± 12%, CP 70% ± 8.2%) and viability (control 85% ± 8%, CP 81% ± 10%) and islets from CP patients with diabetes showed decreases in yield (3002 - 2300 IE/g), purity (61% ± 16%) and viability (62% ± 21%). Islets measuring 50 - 200 μ were similar in abundance in controls (94.74% ± 3.2%) and CP patients with and without diabetes, 86.31% ± 4.9%, 91.03% ± 3.8%. GSIR of islets from CP patients and controls were similar at 5.5 mM glucose (2.8 - 3.1 μU/ml). However, GSIR at 16.5 mM glucose was decreased in CP patients (control 18.5 ± 0.6, CP without diabetes 11.8 ± 0.3, CP with diabetes 4.3 ± 0.3 μU/ml). Conclusion: Our results demonstrate suitability of islets isolated from CP patients of tropical region for autotransplantation.

Energy Aware Clustered Based Multipath Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

With the advance of wireless communication technologies, small-size and high-performance computing and communication devices are increasingly used in daily life. After the success of second generation mobile system, more interest was started in wireless communications. A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a wireless network without any fixed infrastructure or centralized control;it contains mobile nodes that are connected dynamically in an arbitrary manner. The Mobile Ad hoc Networks are essentially suitable when infrastructure is not present or difficult or costly to setup or when network setup is to be done quickly within a short period, they are very attractive for tactical communication in the military and rescue missions. They are also expected to play an important role in the civilian for as convention centers, conferences, and elec-tronic classrooms. The clustering is an important research area in mobile ad hoc networks because it im-proves the performance of flexibility and scalability when network size is huge with high mobility. All mo-bile nodes operate on battery power;hence, the power consumption becomes an important issue in Mobile Ad hoc Network. In this article we proposed an Energy Aware Clustered-Based Multipath Routing (EACMR), which forms several clusters, finds energy aware node-disjoint multiple routes from a source to destination and increases the network life time by using optimal routes.
