densities, Ultrasonic Speeds, viscosities and Refractive Indices of Binary Mixtures of Benzene with Benzyl Alcohol,Benzonitrile, Benzoyl Chloride and Chlorobenzene at 303.15 K

densities, ρ, ultrasonic speeds, u , viscosities, η , and refractive indices, n , of pure benzene, benzyl alcohol (BA), benzonitrile (BN), benzoyl chloride (BC), chlorobenzene (CB) and their thirty six binary mixtures, with benzene as common component, were measured at 303.15 K over the entire mole fraction range. From these experimental data the values of deviations in ultrasonic speed, Δ u , isentropic compressibility, Δk s , excess acoustic impedance, Z E , deviation in viscosity, Δη, and excess Gibbs free energy of activation of viscous flow, G *E , and partial molar isentropic compressibility, of BA, BN, BC and CB in benzene were computed. The variation of these derived functions with composition of the mixtures suggested the increased cohesion (molecular order) in the solution and that interaction (A‐B)>(A‐A) or (B‐B). Moreover, theoretical prediction of ultrasonic speed, viscosity and refractive index of all the four binary mixtures was made on the basis of empirical and semi‐empirical relations by using the experimental values of the pure components. Comparison of theoretical results with the experimental values was made in order to assess the suitability of these relations in reproducing the experimental values of u , η and n . Also, molecular radii of pure liquids and the average molecular radii of binary mixtures were evaluated using the corresponding refractive indices of pure liquids and binary mixtures. The average molecular radii of binary mixtures were found to be additive with respect to mole fraction of the pure component.

d-xylose is an abundant sugar found in plant biomass and can be used as a renewable feedstock for the microbial production of diverse biofuels and ***,d-xylose metabolism is slow in many industrial microorganisms,at least as compared to glucose *** surprisingly,a number of approaches have been developed for improving d-xylose metabolism in diverse *** this work,we applied a previously developed evolution strategy based on media-in-oil emulsions for improving the growth yield of Escherichia coli NCM3722 on *** 30 rounds of evolutions,we isolated multiple mutants with increased growth yield on *** addition,we also observed similar increases in the growth *** mutants were selected for whole-genome *** mutants had an amber stop mutation in adenylate cyclase,which truncates nearly 60%of the ***,the ability of this mutant to grow on xylose indicated that truncated enzyme,lacking the C-terminal regulatory domain,is still *** other mutant had a point mutation in the cyclic AMP receptor protein(CRP),near the high affinity binding site for cyclic *** mutations,when intro-duced into wild type ***,were able to increase the growth yields at levels similar to the isolated *** addition to d-xylose,these mutant strains and their genetic mimics also exhibited higher growth rates and yields on glucose,lactose,and *** results suggest that the improved growth rates and yields are due to changes in the production and sensing of intracellular cyclic AMP concentrations and also suggest native concentrations are suboptimal with respect to the growth rate and yield under the growth conditions ***,these results may prove useful for engineering strains of *** for high-density fermentations or protein production.

Estimation of soil erosion risk within a small mountainous sub-watershed in Kerala,India,using Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE) and geo-information technology

A comprehensive methodology that integrates Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation （RUSLE） model and Geographic Information System （GIS） techniques was adopted to determine the soil erosion vulner- ability of a forested mountainous sub-watershed in Kerala, India. The spatial pattern of annual soil erosion rate was obtained by integrating geo-environmental variables in a raster based GIS method. GIS data layers including, rainfall erosivity （R）, soil erodability （K）, slope length and steepness （LS）, cover management （C） and conservation practice （P） factors were computed to determine their effects on average annual soil loss in the area. The resultant map of annual soil erosion shows a maximum soil loss of 17.73 t h-1 y i with a close relation to grass land areas, degraded forests and deciduous forests on the steep side-slopes （with high LS ）. The spatial erosion maps generated with RUSLE method and GIS can serve as effective inputs in deriving strategies for land planning and management in the environmentally sensitive mountainous areas.

Temporary storage/shipping of cell/tissue engineering products from bench to bedside is a key aspect of re-generative *** current proof-of-concept study presents a multipurpose device for temporary storage/shipping of cell culture dishes containing cell/tissue *** device,made with readily available raw ma-terials,contains three elements viz.a specialized lid,polymeric plates having grooves and a set of nuts and *** part of the performance evaluation,the device was first subjected to a simulated storage/shipping process,wherein the leak-proof and aseptic containment of the contents was ***,the setup was used for temporary storage/shipping of dishes having(a)L929 cell monolayers cultured on treated surfaces,(b)SIRC,HaCaT and A549 cell sheets cultured on thermo-responsive surfaces,(c)HOS-cell encapsulated agar gels and(d)HOS-cell seeded silk fibroin *** results showed that the health of cell monolayers/cell sheets/tissue constructs after the process was comparable to that before the *** device was scalable,simple to handle,can be made for a single or multi-use purpose,and can be resizable to load other culture *** design of the storage/shipping device described in this report thus offers versatile features and applications.

Sensitivity of the Indian Monsoon to Human Activities

In this paper the authors perform an extensive sensitivity analysis of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall to changes in parameters and boundary conditions which are influenced by human activities. For this study the authors use a box model of the Indian monsoon which reproduces key features of the observed monsoon dynamics such as the annual course of precipitation and the transitions between winter and summer regimes. Because of its transparency and computational efficiency, this model is highly suitable for exploring the effects of anthropogenic perturbations such as emissions of greenhouse gases and sulfur dioxide, and land cover changes, on the Indian monsoon. Results of a systematic sensitivity analysis indicate that changes in those parameters which are related to emissions of greenhouse gases lead to an increase in Indian summer rainfall. In contrast, all parameters related to higher atmospheric aerosol concentrations lead to a decrease in Indian rainfall. Similarly, changes in parameters which can be related to forest conversion or desertifieation, act to decrease the summer precipitation. The results indicate that the sign of precipitation changes over India will be dependent on the direction and relative magnitude of different human perturbations.
