This paper describes the operation and outcome of one of the United Kingdom＇s largest multi-partner research activities in nanoparticles. The research covers the discovery and development of organic and inorganic crystals/nanoparticles, nanoparticle properties towards specific product applications. The research also encompassed bespoke measurement technology for nanoparticles and structure interactions. Significant research outcomes are summarised. The paper illustrates the advantages from industrially motivated research and value of collective action between a broad group of researchers in a nation.

A new FAGE setup has recently been built at the University of Lille,*** permits the quantification of OH and HO 2 in the atmosphere with a detection limit of 3×10 5 molecules/（cm 3 ·min） for OH and 1×10 6 molecules/（cm 3 ·min） for HO *** coupling to a photolysis cell enables the measurement of the total reactivity of the hydroxyl radical in ambient air and kinetic studies in *** configurations have been considered：one with the photolysis cell at 90° to the FAGE nozzle,the other on line with the FAGE *** two configurations have been tested and validated by measuring the well known rate constants of OH with CH 4,C 3 H 8 and *** advantages and drawbacks of each configuration have been *** ＂on line＂ configuration limits losses and permits measurements over a larger reactivity range but is affected by OH formation from the laser beam striking the FAGE nozzle,thus limiting the ability to carry out energy dependence studies which can,in contrast,be successfully performed in the 90° configuration.

Moderate to severe perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy occurs in~1 to 3/1000 live births in high-income countries and is associated with a significant risk of death or neurodevelopmental *** assessment is important to help identify highrisk infants,to help families,and to support appropriate interventions.A wide range of monitoring tools is available to assess changes over time,including urine and blood biomarkers,neurological examination,and *** present,magnetic resonance imaging is unique as although it is expensive and not suited to monitoring the early evolution of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy by a week of life it can provide direct insight into the anatomical changes in the brain after hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and so offers strong prognostic information on the long-term outcome after hypoxic-ischemic *** review investigated the temporal dynamics of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy injuries,with a particular emphasis on exploring the correlation between the prognostic implications of magnetic resonance imaging scans in the first week of life and their relationship to long-term outcome prediction,particularly for infants treated with therapeutic hypothermia.A comprehensive literature search,from 2016 to 2024,identified 20 pertinent *** review highlights that while the optimal timing of magnetic resonance imaging scans is not clear,overall,it suggests that magnetic resonance imaging within the first week of life provides strong prognostic *** challenges limit the timing consistency,particularly the need for intensive care and clinical ***,although most reports examined the prognostic value of scans taken between 4 and 10 days after birth,there is evidence from small numbers of cases that,at times,brain injury may continue to evolve for weeks after *** suggests that in the future it will be important to explore a wider range of times after hypo

Comprehensive studies identify motor neuron spectrum disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)as globally rising fatal disorders with the highest prevalence in aging populations,influenced by ethnicity and ancestry(GBd 2016 Motor Neuron disease Colla borators,2018).While~10% of diagnoses involve a family history(fALS),most cases are considered sporadic(sALS).However,population-based studies suggest that even cases without a common index mutation impart heritability(Ryan et al.,2019),indicating a crucial role of rare and as yet unknown genetic denominators.

Reminiscing begins with childhood and passes on to student days through graduate school and the first real contact with research. Then early academic posi- tions and stumbling efforts to pursue my ideas. The first significant progress came as a research associate with Prof. W. M. Elsasser at the University of Utah, beginning with an introduction to magnetohydrodynarnics and the generation of the geomagnetic field through induction in the liquid metal core of Earth. A move to the University of Chicago to work with Prof. j. A. Simpson, on the implications of cosmic ray varia- tions and interplanetary magnetic fields, led to the theory of coronal expansion and the solar wind and then to exploring the dynamical effects of cosmic rays on the galactic magnetic field. Spontaneous current sheets and intrinsic rapid reconnection in interlaced magnetic field line topologies were the next big project, leading up to retirement. Finally, it is a pleasure to recall my many associates, whose fresh thinking helped stimulate the daily research activities.

Lumped Parameter Outflow Models for 1-d Blood Flow Simulations:Effect on Pulse Waves and Parameter Estimation

Several lumped parameter,or zero-dimensional(0-d),models of the microcirculation are coupled in the time domain to the nonlinear,one-dimensional(1-d)equations of blood flow in large arteries.A linear analysis of the coupled system,together with in vivo observations,shows that:(i)an inflow resistance that matches the characteristic impedance of the terminal arteries is required to avoid non-physiological wave reflections;(ii)periodic mean pressures and flow distributions in large arteries depend on arterial and peripheral resistances,but not on the compliances and inertias of the system,which only affect instantaneous pressure and flow waveforms;(iii)peripheral inertias have a minor effect on pulse waveforms under normal conditions;and(iv)the time constant of the diastolic pressure decay is the same in any 1-d model artery,if viscous dissipation can be neglected in these arteries,and it depends on all the peripheral compliances and resistances of the *** this analysis,we propose an algorithm to accurately estimate peripheral resistances and compliances from in vivo *** algorithm is verified against numerical data simulated using a 1-d model network of the 55 largest human arteries,in which the parameters of the peripheral windkessel outflow models are known a *** and flow waveforms in the aorta and the first generation of bifurcations are reproduced with relative root-mean-square errors smaller than 3%.

On the use of residual dipolar couplings in multi-state structure calculation of two-domain proteins

Residual dipolar couplings(RdCs)are powerful nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)probes for the structure calculation of ***,an alignment tensor that defines the orientation of the entire molecule relative to the magnetic field is determined either before refinement of individual bond vectors or simultaneously with this *** single-domain proteins this approach works well since all bond vectors can be described within the same coordinate frame,which is given by the alignment ***,novel approaches are sought after for systems where no universal alignment tensor can be ***,we present an approach that can be applied to two-domain proteins that enables the calculation of multiple states within each domain as well as with respect to the relative positions of the two domains.
