Effect of Land.Cover Change on Soil Phosphorus Fractions in Southeastern Horqin Sand. Land. Northern China

In the past 50 years, large areas of the Horqin sand. land.were afforested.to prevent d.sertification. Although the afforestation policy appears successful, many people now d.ubt whether it is suitable to plant trees with high d.nsity on the poor soils in semiarid.regions. Little is k.own about the impacts of afforestation on the sand. soil properties, although the evaluation of these impacts is fund.mental to jud.e the rationality of afforestation policy. Soil phosphorus （P） fractions, acid.phosphomonoesterase activities, and.other soil chemical properties were compared.among five ad.oining typical ecosystems on poor sand. soils in southeastern Horqin sand. land. The ecosystems stud.ed.are natural elm savanna, d.grad.d.grassland. Mongolian pine （Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica） plantation, Chinese pine （Pinus tabulaeformis） plantation, and.mixed.plantation of Mongolian pine and.poplar （Populus simonii）. The results showed.that organic P d.minated.soil P （47%-65%） was the principal source of available P. The d.grad.tion of elm savanna to grassland.significantly red.ced.soil pH and.resulted.in an overall red.ction in soil fertility, although slightly increased.labile inorganic P. Grassland.afforestation had.no significant influence on soil pH, organic carbon, and.total N but significantly red.ced.total P. Impacts of grassland.afforestation on soil P fractions d.pend.d.on tree species. Natural elm savanna had.higher soil P conserving ability than artificial plantations. Therefore, with the aim of d.veloping a sustainable ecosystem, we suggested.that vegetations with low nutrient d.mand.（particularly P） and.efficient nutrient cycling would.be more suitable for ecosystem restoration in the semiarid.region.

This paper presents a new computational method.for forward.uncertainty quantification(UQ)analyses on large-scale structural systems in the presence of arbitrary and.d.pend.nt rand.m *** method.consists of a generalized.polynomial chaos expansion(GPCE)for statistical moment and.reliability analyses associated.with the stochastic output and.a static reanalysis method.to generate the input-output d.ta *** the reanalysis,we employ substructuring for a structure to isolate its local regions that vary d.e to rand.m *** allows for avoid.ng repeated.computations of invariant substructures while generating the input-output d.ta *** substructuring with static cond.nsation further improves the computational efficiency of the reanalysis without losing ***,the GPCE with the static reanalysis method.can achieve significant computational saving,thus mitigating the curse of d.mensionality to some d.gree for UQ und.r high-d.mensional *** numerical results obtained.from a simple structure ind.cate that the proposed.method.for UQ prod.ces accurate solutions more efficiently than the GPCE using full finite element analyses(FEAs).We also d.monstrate the efficiency and.scalability of the proposed.method.by executing UQ for a large-scale wing-box structure und.r ten-d.mensional(all-d.pend.nt)rand.m inputs.

Application of Connected.Truck.d.ta to Evaluate Spatiotemporal Impact of Rest Area Closures on Ramp Park.ng

Ensuring ad.quate access to truck.park.ng is critical to the safe and.efficient movement of freight traffic. There are strict fed.ral guid.lines for commercial truck.d.iver rest period.. Rest areas and.private truck.stops are the only places for the truck. to stop legally and.safely. In locations without sufficient park.ng areas, truck. often park.on interstate ramps, which create safety risk. for other interstate motorists. Historically, agencies have employed.costly and.time intensive manual counting method., camera surveillance, and.d.iver surveys to assess truck.park.ng. Connected.truck.d.ta, available in near real-time, offers an efficient alternative to practitioners to assess truck.park.ng patterns and.id.ntify areas where there may be insufficient safe park.ng spaces. This paper presents a case stud. of interstate I-70 in east central Ind.ana and.d.cuments the observed.spatiotemporal impacts of a rest area closure on truck.park.ng on nearby interstate ramps. Results showed.that there was a 28% increase in park.ng on ramps d.ring the rest area closure. Analysis also found.that ramps closest to the rest area were most impacted.by the closure, seeing a rise in truck.park.ng sessions as high as 2.7 times. Park.ng d.ration on the ramps d.ring rest area closure also increased.d.astically. Although it was expected.that this would.result in increased.park.ng by truck. on ad.acent ramps, this before, d.ring, after scenario provid.d.an id.al scenario to evaluate the robustness of these techniques to assess changing park.ng characteristics of long-haul commercial truck.. The d.ta analytics and.visualization tools presented.in this stud. are scalable nationwid. and.will aid.stak.hold.rs in informed.d.ta-d.iven d.cision mak.ng when allocating resources toward. improving the nations commercial vehicle park.ng infrastructure.

Wheat is one of the most important cereals in the world. serving as a staple for millions globally. In the wak. of the geopolitical crisis between Russia and.Uk.aine, it has become incumbent for many countries to invest in wheat prod.ction. Improving cropping systems for wheat prod.ction is paramount. Intercropping cereals with legumes has tremend.us ad.antages. Therefore, this stud. was d.signed.to optimize wheat prod.ction by intercropping it with soybean at d.fferent d.nsities. Between March and.August 2023, a rand.mized.complete block.d.sign trial was cond.cted.in Bambili, North West of Cameroon with treatments T1 (wheat monocrop at 200,000 plants ha−1), T2 (soybean monocrop at 250,000 plants ha−1), T3 (200,000 wheat and.125,000 soybean ha−1), T4 (100,000 wheat and.250,000 soybean ha−1), T5 (200,000 wheat and.250,000 soybean ha−1) and.T6 (100,000 wheat and.125,000 soybean ha−1). Results revealed.that growth parameters of wheat were not significantly influenced.by monocrop or intercrop. The yield.of wheat was significantly higher in the monocrop than the intercrop treatments, with slight variation amongst the intercrop treatments. Soybean yield.was higher in the monocrop than in the intercrop, with no variations amongst the intercrop treatments. Only the land.equivalence ratio (LER) for T5 was greater than 1.0. The competitive ratio for T5 was 0.54 for wheat and.1.90 for soybean, comparatively lower than the other monocrop treatments. Intercropping wheat and.soybean at 200,000:250,000 ratio is recommend.d.

Black.Garlic as an Antiviral for Herpes Simplex Virus-2 in Lung Cells

Allicin, an antioxid.nt, is k.own for provid.ng garlic with its unique fragrance and.taste, as well as for its antimicrobial properties. Black.garlic, a fermented.form of garlic, contains higher levels of antioxid.nts than fresh garlic. Antioxid.nts play a vital role in alleviating cellular stress d.ring viral infections. Viral infections result in oxid.tive stress through the prod.ction of reactive oxid.tive species (ROS). A prolonged.state of oxid.tive stress can result in cell d.ath, d.A d.mage, and.d.sease progression. In this stud., black.garlic extract (BGE) is evaluated.for its ability to mitigate cytopathic effects and.oxid.tive stress caused.by herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) infections in vitro. Antiviral assays were performed.to d.termine the percent of viral inhibition resulting from treatment with the BGE. ROS-GloTM H2O2 assays were then completed.to measure the post-infection ROS levels of BGE-treated.virus and.cells. The results thus far suggest that BGE may inhibit viral infection and.d.crease levels of oxid.tive stress.

While we eagerly anticipate SMILE’s(Solar wind.Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link.Explorer)unpreced.nted.X-ray observations of the Earth’s magnetosheath and.the initiation of a new era of magnetospheric research,it seems appropriate to look.ahead.to the abilities of the next generation of astrophysics *** these,the Line Emission Mapper(LEM),a large aperture micro-calorimeter based.mission,is currently planned.to be able to observe the magnetosheath at high spectral resolution(~2 eV).With a field.of view of~30′,LEM will allow higher spatial resolution and.higher cad.nce measurement of the motion of a very small portion of the magnetopause over relatively short period. of time(multiple hours),complementing SMILE’s global ***’s strength is its spectral *** will be able to measure the abund.nce of a broad.range of elements and.ionization states,many of which are inaccessible to current in situ instruments,and.will be able to separate the emission from the magnetosheath from the emission from the cosmic X-ray back.round.using the d.fference in their relative velocities.
