For centuries, plants and plant-based products have been used as a valuable and safe natural source of medicines for treating various ailments. The therapeutic potential of most of these plants could be ascribed to their anticancer, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, antispasmodic, analgesic and various other pharmacological properties. However, several commonly used plants have been reported to adversely affect male reproductive functions in wildlife and humans. The effects observed with most of the plant and plant-based products have been attributed to the antispermatogenic and/or antisteroidogenic properties of one or more active ingredients. This review discusses the detrimental effects of some of the commonly used plants on various target cells in the testis. A deeper insight into the molecular mechanisms of action of these natural compounds could pave the way for developing therapeutic strategies against their toxicity.

influence of Pixel Quality, Land cover, and Hydroclimatic Cycle on Moderate Resolution imaging Spectroradiometer inundation Monitoring Performance in the Pantanal, Brazil

Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODiS) time series (TS) have been widely applied for flood monitoring in large tropical wetlands. However, little systematic work is available on the influence of pixel quality, vegetation cover, and the annual hydroclimatic cycle on classification performance. in this study, this issue is examined based on a six-year, 250 m resolution MOD13Q1 TS underpinned by extensive in situ measurements. The most parsimonious logistic regression model was obtained for land surface water index (LSWi) and enhanced vegetation index (EVi). The inclusion of the 500 m MCD12Q1 land cover Type 2 product improves accuracy. Performance markedly decreases for subsets that include pixels with a Vi quality assurance (QA) level poorer than 0110 and/or a pixel reliability (PR) of three. When a Savitzky-Golay filter was used for TS reconstitution, performance is slightly lower than those obtained in a classification of a Vi QA 0001 or PR = 0 level strata;moreover, these have the advantage of gap-free flood monitoring. The overall accuracy (OA) of the PR = 0 subset is better for grasslands, and slightly lower for Savannah, and for woodland and forests. The average OA is highest for the dry season, intermediate for the rainy/flooded season, and lowest for the transitional seasons, when the wetland becomes flooded or dries. comparisons of internal, k-fold, and external validations indicate that only external validation enables a realistic assessment of flood-mapping performance. The complete substitution of PR = 3 pixels by filled-in values is recommended for operational flood monitoring, and it is concluded that the use of the simplified PR metrics as filtering criteria for gap filling and smoothing is sufficient for flood monitoring in the Pantanal. Classification metrics vary more strongly as a function of the hydrological period than by vegetation cover. Purpose:This study aimed to examine the associations of accelerometer-derived steps volume and intensity with hospitalizations and all-cause mortality in older ***:This prospective cohort study involved 768 community-dwelling Spanish older adults(78.8±4.9 years,mean±SD;53.9% females)from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging(2012-2017).The number of steps per day and step cadence(steps/min) were derived from a hip-mounted accelerometer worn for at least 4 days at *** were followed-up over a mean period of 3.1 years for hospitalization and 5.7 years for all-cause *** proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the individual and joint associations between daily steps and stepping intensity with hospitalizations and all-cause ***:included participants walked 5835± 3445 steps/day with an intensity of 7.3± 4.1 steps/*** adjusting for age,sex,body mass index(BMi),education,income,marital status and comorbidities,higher step count(hazard ratio(HR)=0.95,95% confidence interval(95%Ci:0.90-1.00,and HR=0.87,95%Ci:0.81-0.95 per additional 1000 steps) and higher step intensity(HR=0.95,95%Ci:0.91-0.99,and HR=0.89,95%Ci:0.84-0.95 per each additional step/min) were associated with fewer hospitalizations and all-cause mortality risk,*** to the group having low step volume and intensity,individuals in the group having high step volume and intensity had a lower risk of hospitalization(HR=0.72,95%Ci:0.52-0.98) and all-cause mortality(HR=0.60,95%Ci:0.37-0.98).conclusion:Among older adults,both high step volume and step intensity were significantly associated with lower hospitalization and all-cause mortality *** step volume and intensity may benefit older people.

The Effects of Externally Paced Exercise on Executive Function and Stress in college-Aged Students

Purpose The purpose of the study was to investigate the acute effect of a beginner martial art class and aerobic exercise on executive function(EF)in college-aged young *** is overwhelming evidence that demonstrates acute as well as long-term aerobic exercise improves ***,there is limited research comparing externally paced exercise(EPE)to self-paced exercise(SPE)such as walking on improving *** requires greater cortical demand than SPE to execute a motor *** Eight men and eight women,aged 24.2±2.8 years,participated in a Repeated Measures Crossover ***-and post-testing of EF with the Stroop and Tower of London(ToL)and stress level were measured after each of the two 1-h conditions:the SPE consisted of a walk(aerobic exercise)and the EPE was a beginner martial art *** There were significant main effects for the martial art class for the Stroop’s mean reaction time for congruent trials(P=0.01)with a large-effect *** mean reaction time for incongruent trials was significant(P=0.05)with a medium-effect *** ToL’s mean solution time(P=0.003)and mean execution time(P=0.002)were also significant with large-effect *** levels were not significantly improved following either *** The martial art class significantly improved all the major domains of EF,while aerobic exercise of a similar intensity did not demonstrate any measured significant *** physiological benefits of physical exercise are well documented;however,the cognitive enhancing capability of EPE should also be appreciated given the results of this study.

Electrospinning Polylactic Acid Polymer Membranes as Biological Sieve for Yeast and Bacteria

Vaginal infections are suffered by millions of women of reproductive age. Recent research has shown that timely diagnosis of these infections avoids complications in the patient’s health. Since the symptoms of infections caused by yeast and bacteria are similar, the patient is not always treated properly. Membranes with three different thicknesses (66 μm, 83 μm, 128 μm) were produced by electrospinning of polylactic polymer (PLA) and were used as a biological sieve to detect microorganisms present in vaginal infections, bacteria or yeasts. Electrospinning technique is a technique that allows the generation of membranes from nanofibers of material polymeric and therefore, obtaining porous structures. The size of the fibers was observed as well as the morphology and the size of the pores, using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effectiveness of these membranes was proven by the cultivation of the bacteria that passed through the polymeric membrane and the yeasts retained by it. The membranes allowed the retention of yeasts of Candida albicans type with dimensions of 7 μm, which allowed the separation of Brevibacterium ravens purgense bacteria with dimensions of 1.4 μm, thus demonstrating their effectiveness as biological sieve.

Experimental study of friction dissipators for seismic protection of building structures

This paper presents the results from unidirectional shaking table tests of two reduced scale steel models of a building frame, with one and two floors, respectively. These frames incorporate friction dissipators at every floor. The inputs are sine-dwells and artificial and registered earthquakes. This study is part of a larger research project aiming to assess the seismic efficiency of friction dissipators by means of an integrated numerical and experimental approach. inside this framework, the main objectives of these experiments are to：（i） collect a wide range of results to calibrate a numerical model derived within the project, （ii） clarify some of the most controversial issues about friction dissipators （including behavior for inputs containing pulses, capacity to reduce resonance peaks, introduction of high frequencies in the response, and self- generated eccentricities）, （iii） better understand their dynamic behavior, （iv） provide insight on the feasibility and reliability of using simple friction dissipators for seismic protection of building structures and （v） characterize the hysteretic behavior of these devices. Most of these objectives are satisfactorily reached and relevant conclusions are stated.
