Probing behavior of aposymbiotic green peach aphid persicae） on susceptible Solanum tuberosum and resistant Solanum stoloniferum plants

The green peach aphid, Myzuspersicae Sulzer （Hemiptera： Aphididae） is one of the potato important pests; it is the most efficient vector of potato viruses. Myzuspersicae harbors the endosymbiotic bacteria Buchnera aphidicola which supplements their diet. There is increasing evidence that B. aphidicola is involved in plant-aphid interactions and we previously demonstrated that B. aphidieola disruption （aposymbiosis） affected the probing behavior ofM. persicae on radish plants, delaying host plant acceptance. In this work, we evaluated the effect of aposymbiosis on the probing behavior of M. persicae on 2 Solanum species with different compatibility with M. persieae, Solanum tuberosum （susceptible） and Solanum stoloniferum （resistant） with the electrical penetration graph technique （EPG）. To disrupt B. aphidicola, rifampicin was administered to aphids through artificial diets. Aposymbiotic aphids, on both plant species, showed increased pathway activities, mechanical problems with the stylets, and delayed salivation in the phloem. The extended time in derailed stylet mechanics affected the occurrence of most other probing activities; it delayed the time to the first phloem phase and prevented ingestion from the phloem. The effect of aposymbiosis was more evident in the compatible interaction of M. persicae-S, tuberosum, than in the incompatible interaction with S. stoloniferum, which generated the M. persicae--S, tuberosum interaction to become incompatible. These results confirm that B. aphidicola is involved in the plant-aphid interaction in relation to plant acceptance, presumably through a role in stylets penetration in the plant.

An increasing number of studies provide evidence for the existence of a microbiota-gut-brain axis and its potential involvement in the development of sporadic Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative *** neuropathologic hallmark of Parkinson’s disease is the presence of brain intraneuronal aggregates of misfolded alpha-synuclein,known as Lewy *** gut microbiota products may trigger alpha-synuclein conformational changes in the neurons of the enteric nervous system,which can then spread to the brain in a prion-like fashion through the vagus *** may interfere with neuroinflammatory pathways and susceptibility to *** this review,we assess the potential role of putative gut microbiota products in the etiopathogeny of Parkinson’s disease,with a special emphasis on functional bacterial amyloid proteins,bacterial biosurfactants,endotoxins and short-chain fatty *** possible roles of molecular hydrogen,a common byproduct of bacterial fermentation,are also addressed.

Aims The Inclusive niche Hypothesis has not been validated for plants using ecophysiological *** few experiments have measured growth and competition but not the physiological response of plants.A metallophyte plant that hyperaccumulates aluminium(Al),Plantago almogravensis,showed a defined spa-tial distribution by occurring mostly on vegetation gaps associ-ated with metalliferous areas(geochemical islands).This case was used to determine,in situ,whether the Inclusive niche Hypothesis was suitable to explain the extent of the species real-ized *** The vegetation associated with *** geochemical islands in the SW coast of Portugal was *** biotic(neighbouring plants)and abiotic(edaphic)components of the niche were cor-related with parameters of the plant’s ecological and physiological performances(plant density and cover;leaf C and n concentration and isotopic composition;growth).The results were obtained using image analysis,abundance and morphological measures,isotopic signatures and chemical *** findings The species showed better physiological performance where its ecological performance was lower due to trade-offs with environ-mental *** species’realized niche was mostly limited by shrub competition and soil *** limits contribute to explain the rarity status of the species:the species has a poor capacity to compete but,due to an enhanced Al-tolerance and Al-hyperaccumulator trait,has the ability to find refuge in geochem-ical islands that are too harsh for most other *** work,based on ecophysiological field studies,provides support for the Inclusive niche Hypothesis relating to plant species.

BACKGROUnD Mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs)are multipotent cell populations obtained from fetal and adult *** share some characteristics with limb bud mesodermal cells such as differentiation potential into osteogenic,chondrogenic,and tenogenic lineages and an embryonic mesodermal *** MSCs differentiate into skeletal-related lineages in vitro,they have not been shown to selforganize into complex skeletal structures or connective tissues,as in the *** this work,we demonstrate that the expression of molecular markers to commit MSCs to skeletal lineages is not sufficient to generate skeletal elements in *** To evaluate the potential of MSCs to differentiate into skeletal lineages and generate complex skeletal structures using the recombinant limb(RL)*** We used the experimental system of RLs from dissociated-reaggregated human placenta(PL)and umbilical cord blood(UCB)*** being harvested and reaggregated in a pellet,cultured cells were introduced into an ectodermal cover obtained from an early chicken limb ***,this filled ectoderm was grafted into the back of a donor chick *** these conditions,the cells received and responded to the ectoderm’s embryonic signals in a spatiotemporal manner to differentiate and pattern into skeletal *** response to differentiation and morphogenetic signals was evaluated by quantitative poly-merase chain reaction,histology,immunofluorescence,scanning electron microscopy,and in situ *** We found that human PL-MSCs and UCB-MSCs constituting the RLs expressed chondrogenic,osteogenic,and tenogenic molecular markers while differentially committing into limb lineages but could not generate complex structures in ***-RL from PL or UCB were committed early to chondrogenic ***,the UCB-RL osteogenic commitment was favored,although preferentially to a tenogenic cell *** findings suggest that the commitment of MSCs to differentiate int

In recent years,hard carbon materials have gained significant interest as anode materials for na-ion *** waste is considered one of the most interesting,renewable,available,and cost-effective precursor to obtain hard carbon(HC);however,HC properties must be finely tuned to achieve performance comparable to those provided by Li-ion *** this work,three biomass wastes(coconut shells,walnut shells,and corn silk) were evaluated as potential precursors for HC preparation involving a pyrolysis process and subsequent acid washing to remove the inorganic *** obtained materials exhibited low and similar specific surface areas(nted different structures and surface *** walnut shell HC possessed a lower amount of inorganic impurities and oxygen-based functional groups compared to the coconut shell and corn silk HCs,leading to higher initial coulombic efficiency(iCE).The structural organization was higher in the case of the walnut shell HC,while the corn silk HC revealed a heterogeneous structure combining both highly disordered carbon and localized graphitized *** HCs delivered high initial reversible capacities between 293 and 315 mAh g^(-1) at 50 mA g^(-1) current rate,which remained rather stable during long-term *** best capacity(293 mAh g^(-1) after 100 charge/discharge cycles) and highest capacity retention(93%) was achieved in walnut HCs in half-cells,which could be associated with its higher sp2 C content,better organized structure,and fewer *** "adsorption-insertion" na storage mechanism is suggested based on several *** walnut HCs exhibited an attractive energy density of 279 Wh/kg when tested in full cells.

The challenge of applying governance and sustainable development to wildland fire management in Southern Europe

This paper discusses participatory processes in wildland fire management （WfM）. Participation is an essential element of both the European Sustainable Development （SD） Strategy and the White Paper on Governance. Governance end SD have thus become an interconnected challenge to be applied to WfM （as a sub-area in forest policy）, amongst other policies. An overspread weakness in WfM is lack of real participation of stakeholders. Absence of （or deficient） participation can seriously impair contribution of this group to WfM in high-risk areas and runs counter governance and the SDS. further, this weakness might prevent an efficient use of fire as a land management tool （prescribed burning, PB） and as a technique for fighting wildfire （suppression fire, Sf）. Even though these fire practices have been well known in many different places, they have been increasingly neglected or Prohibited over time in Southern Europe. At present, forest and fire fighting administrations are turning their eyes back on them and analyzing the benefits of using fire in relation to preventive and suppressive actions. Therefore, participatory and diffusion mechanisms （the latter adopting the shape of national and international experts＇ networks） are required in order to solve the so- called fire paradox： that is, the need to move from a one-dimensinnal perception of the negative impacts of fire to a more sophisticated one that also stresses its positive effects. Governance, based on broad social participation, and diffusion, through fire networks, are of utmost importance in order, first, to diminish long-standing suspicion amongst different interests as to the use of fire and, secondly, to diffuse best practices associated with PB and Sf. Most importantly, the ELI should exercise its environmental leadership so that these new fire practices and sustainable WfM are diffused across the international arena.

Comparing the biogeochemical functioning of two arid subtropical coastal lagoons:the effect of wastewater discharges

nutrient flux,net metabolism,and n2 fixation and denitrification processes were estimated and compared in two semi-arid subtropical coastal lagoons in the Gulf of California:El Soldado(ES),where no wastewater is discharged,and El Rancho(ER),where shrimp farm effluents are regularly *** processes were evaluated with the LOICZ *** time wasn both *** fluxes were higher in ER than in ES and both systems acted as nutrient sinks for most of the *** showed a larger nutrient flow rate in the summer and autumn due to the input of shrimp-farm *** fluxes increased in both ER and ES in the winter in response to the increased nutrient supply from coastal *** and ES both showed autotrophic metabolism and n2 fixation in the spring,autumn,and winter,but heterotrophic metabolism and denitrification in the *** dominated in ER(−2.21 mmol m^(2)day^(−1))and values were higher than those estimated in ES(−0.45 mmol m^(2)day^(−1)).The comparative analysis between ES and ER evidenced the significant changes in its biogeochemical performance caused by the input of anthropogenic nutrients,and can orient the environmental management of coastal lagoons.
