There is relatively good evidence that non-human primates can communicate about objects and events in their envi- ronment in ways that allow recipients to draw inferences about the nature of the event experienced by the signaller. In some spe- cies, there is also evidence that the basic semantic units are not individual calls, but call sequences and the combinations gener- ated by them. These two findings are relevant to theories pertaining to the origins of human language because of the resemblances of these phenomena with linguistic reference and syntactic organisation. Until recently, however, most research efforts on the primate origins of human language have involved Old World species with comparatively few systematic studies on New World monkeys, which has prevented insights into the deeper phylogenetic roots and evolutionary origins of language-relevant capaci- ties. To address this, we review the older primate literature and very recent evidence for functionally referential communication and call combinations in New World primates. Within the existing literature there is ample evidence in both Callitrichids and Ce- bids for acoustically distinct call variants given to external disturbances that are accompanied by distinct behavioural responses. A general pattern is that one call type is typically produced in response to a wide range of general disturbances, often on the ground but also including inter-group encounters, while another call type is produced in response to a much narrower range of aerial threats. This pattern is already described for Old World monkeys and Prosimians, suggesting an early evolutionary origin. second, recent work with black-fronted tiff monkeys has produced evidence for different alarm call sequences consisting of acoustically distinct call types. These sequences appear to encode several aspects of the predation event simultaneously, notably predator type and location. since meaningful call sequences have already been described in

The pistil, the female reproductive organ of plants, is a key player in the success of sexual plant reproduction. Ultimately, the production of fruits and seeds depends on the proper pistil development and function. Therefore, the identification and characterization of pistil expressed genes is essential for a better understanding and manipulation of the plant reproduction process. For studying the function of pistil expressed genes, transgenic and/or mutant plants for the genes of interest are used. The present article provides a review of methods already exploited to analyze sexual reproductive success. We intend to supply useful information and to guide future experiments in the study of genes affecting pistil development and function.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal malnutrition during lactation on prostate growth and estradiol serum concentration in the prostate of pups. At delivery,nine Wistar rats were separated into three groups：control group （C） with free access to a standard laboratory diet containing 22% protein;protein-energyrestricted group （PER） with free access to an isoenergy and protein-restricted diet containing 8% protein;and energyrestricted group （ER） receiving standard laboratory diet in restricted quantities,which were calculated according to the mean ingestion of the PER group. All pups were killed at weaning. PER and ER groups presented a significant reduction in estradiol serum concentration （C = 73.8±4.6,PER=48.7±3.2,ER = 59.7±5.5 pg mL^-1,P〈0.01）,total prostatic acini （C = 24 190.0±716.5,PER = 20 290.0±631.4,ER=19 550.0±759.1 μm^2;P〈0.01）,lumen of the prostatic acini （C = 5 590.0±165.4,PER = 3 776.0±251.3,ER = 4 658.0±198.1 μm^2;P〈0.01） and epithelial area of the prostate dorsal lobe （C=18 120.0±391.4,PER=16 520.0±799.2,ER = 14 890.0±589.8 μm^2;P〈0.01）.Testosterone concentration was significantly increased only in the PER group when compared with the C group （C = 0.09±0.01,PER = 0.44±0.04,ER=0.15±0.03 ng mL^-1,P〈0.001）. An adequate nutritional state in early life is important for normal growth of the prostate gland,which seem to be related to serum levels of estradiol.

Influence of proton pump inhibitors in the development of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis

AIM To investigate whether the use of proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) increases the incidence of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(sBP) in patients with cirrhosis and *** An historical cohort study was carried out in cirrhotic outpatients with ascites followed in a specialized clinic at a tertiary hospital in southern Brazil. Patient charts were reviewed to collect information on the variables of interest as the use of PPIs. Primary outcome was defined as development of sBP during the study period. sBP was diagnosed based on ascitic fluid polymorphonuclear cell count ≥ 250 cells/mm3 without evidence of an intraabdominal, surgically treatable source of *** Of 738 cirrhotic patients, 582(58.2% male) were enrolled, with mean age of 53.6 ± 12 years. Hepatitis C virus infection(36.2%) and alcohol abuse(25.6%) were the main etiologies of cirrhosis. The presence of ascites was detected in 299(51.4%) patients during the development of the study. Nineteen patients with previous diagnosis of sBP undergoing secondary prophylaxis and 22 patients with insufficient PPI data were further excluded. Of 258 patients with ascites, 151 used PPIs, and 34 developed sBP(22.5%). Among 107 non-users of PPIs, 23 developed sBP(21.5%)(HR = 1.44, 95%CI: 0.85-2.47, P = 0.176). The median follow-up time of patients using PPI was 27 mo vs 32 mo for non-users. Univariate analysis of the risk factors associated with the development of sBP revealed a significant association of sPB with the severity of liver disease according to the Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) score. Multivariate analysis confirmed that CTP score was the only independent variable influencing the occurrence of sBP. survival at 60 mo(Kaplan-Meier analysis) was similar in users and non-users of PPI, independently of the presence of sBP(58.4% vs 62.7% respectively, P = 0.66). For patients with sBP, survival at 60 mo was 55.1%, vs 61.7% in patients without sBP(P = 0.34). CONCLUsION In conclusion, the rate of sBP was not
