The Kamchatka Peninsula – situated in the Pacific "ring of Fire" – has 29 active and over 400 extinct volcanoes. Since it is situated in the northeastern extremity of russia, in subarctic climate,the volcanic landforms are overprinted by the 446 glaciers. This research focuses on the 1^(st) Mutnaya catchment which drains the southern slopes of two active volcanoes: Avachinsky and Koryaksky. Those volcanoes are a permanent threat for the cities of Petropavlovsk and Elizovo, which are the 2 of 3 cities of the peninsula. Hence, most of the studies carried out in the area dealt with the natural hazards and only few focus on landscape evolution. Thus, the purpose of this study was to elaborate a cartographic approach which integrates classic geomorphology with state of the art GIS and remote sensing techniques. As result,different landforms and related processes have been analysed and included in the first general geomorphologic map of the 1^(st) Mutnaya catchment.

Convergence of the turkey gut microbiota following cohabitation under commercial settings

background:Microbiota development is a critical aspect of turkey poult maturation,and the succession of microbes in the turkey gut has been shown to correlate with poult *** purpose of this study was to determine the fate of the microbiota in turkey poults after movement of birds first raised in an isolated hatch brood system into a more traditional commercial brood facility with pre-existing *** poults were first divided into groups raised in conventional brood pens from day-of-hatch and those raised in an experimental hatch brood *** 11 days of growth,hatch brood birds were moved into pens within the conventional brood barn and monitored for an additional 18 *** of both hatch brood and conventional pen birds was performed at multiple timepoints throughout the study,and cecal content was used to analyze the bacterial microbiota using 16S rrNA gene amplicon ***:Alpha diversity tended to be higher in samples from conventional pen birds compared to those from hatch brood birds prior to the day 11 move,but the difference between systems was not observed *** beta diversity metrics,bacterial community succession appeared delayed in the hatch brood system birds pre-move,but post-move community composition quickly converged with that of the conventional pen *** was validated through assessment of significantly different genera between hatch brood system and conventional pen birds,where numbers of significantly different taxa quickly decreased following the *** key taxa previously associated with poult performance were delayed in their appearance and relative abundance in hatch brood ***:Overall,this study demonstrates that the use of isolated hatch brood systems has an impact on the poult gut microbiota,but its impact is resolved quickly once the birds are introduced into a conventional brood ***,the benefits of pathogen reduction with hatch brood systems may out

Adsorption of Copper from an Ammonia-Thiosulfate Media Using DOWEX 550A Ion Exchange resin

The study of copper adsorption onto ion exchange resins of anionic type is part of the gold recovery from ammonia-thiosulfate solutions, where copper is the main impurity of the system because it acts as a catalyst of gold dissolution reaction. A study is made of the adsorption and desorption of copper in the form of the complex in an ammonia-thiosulfate media on an ion exchange resin, DOWEX 550A, classified as a strong base, which in its inner structure has a quaternary amine functional group. In the studied pH range copper adsorption increased with increasing pH, while the presence of thiosulfate decreased it, the same as the ammonia content, due to the greater presence of cuprotetramine, . Elution of the copper complexes from the resin was more efficient with sulfite than with perchlorate.

Are eavesdroppers multimodal？ Sensory exploitation of floral signals by a non-native cockroach blatta orientalis

The study of multi-modal communication has only recently been extended to innate and learned interactions between flowers and their animal visitors, and usually only to pollinators. Here we studied the relevance of floral scent and visual display of a night blooming, putatively hawkmoth-pollinated plantOenothera acaulis(Onagraceae) in the attraction of non-native cockroachesblatta orientalis(blattodea: blattidae), which function as facultative floral larcenists in coastal habitats of central Chile. We experimentally decoupled visual (corolla) and olfactory (fragrance) stimuli by presenting paper corollas and green mesh bags, with or without a freshly-picked natural flower inside. We then contrasted the behavioral responses of roaches in these treatments with those to the natural combination of traits in actual flowers and their respective control treatments, measuring the roaches’ frequency of first visits, mean and total residence time spent in each treatment. The roaches primarily used olfactory cues when approachingO. acaulisflowers at two biologically relevant spatial scales. In addition, the presence of conspecific roaches had a strong influence on recruitment to the experimental arena, increasing the statistical differences among treatments. Our results suggest a primacy of floral fragrance over visual stimuli in the foraging responses ofb. orientalis. Olfactory cues were necessary and sufficient to attract the roaches, and the visual cues presented in our manipulations only marginally increased their attraction within a 20 cm diameter of the stimulus. The full spectrum of floral visitation behavior was not elicited by the artificial flowers, suggesting the need for additional tactile or contact chemosensory stimuli not provided by paper. Although the nitrogenous scent compounds that we found inO. acaulisflowers are almost exclusively found in hawkmoth-pollinated flowers, the attractiveness of these compounds to a non-native, facultative flower-visiting insect

The Effect of Cortex Lycii on rattus norvegicus’ blood Glucose Level Using a High Glucose Diet

One of the primary problems in the United States is diabetes. Cortex Lycii is an herb from Asia mostly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Although its main purpose is not for lowering blood glucose levels, there are studies on Cortex Lycii with other substances which have proven it can lower glucose level in type 2 diabetes rat. Unlike other experiments, this experiment only used Cortex Lycii as a single unit to see if there was any effect on blood glucose level. Also an observation was done on if Cortex Lycii could reduce blood glucose level after ingesting a high glucose diet. rattus norvegicus was used in this project and in order for the subject to consume Cortex Lycii, the herb was boiled and the liquid was given for consumption. In order to increase the rats’ glucose levels, corn syrup and white sugar were added to the mixture. The data showed significant decrease of blood glucose when Cortex Lycii liquid was ingested. This research has shown that Cortex Lycii can be a potential treatment for hyperglycemia or diabetes. With further research, there can be an alternative treatment rather than injecting external hormones (Insulin).

Impact of age on feasibility and short-term outcomes of ErAS after laparoscopic colorectal resection

bACKGrOUND There is still large debate on feasibility and advantages of fast-track protocols in elderly population after colorectal *** To investigate the impact of age on feasibility and short-term results of enhanced recovery protocol(ErP)after laparoscopic colorectal *** Data from 225 patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal resection and ErP between March 2014 and July 2018 were retrospectively *** groups were considered according to patients’age:Group A,65 years old or less,Group b,66 to 75 years old and Group C,76 years old or *** and pathological data were compared amongst groups together with post-operative outcomes including post-operative overall and surgery-specific complications,mortality and readmission *** in post-operative length of stay and adherence to ErP’s items were evaluated in the three study *** Among the 225 patients,112 belonged to Group A,57 to Group b and 56 to Group ***-day overall morbidity was 32.9%whilst mortality was *** the percentage of complications progressively increased with age(25.9%vs 36.8%vs 42.9%),no differences were observed in the rate of major complications(4.5%vs 3.5%vs 1.8%),prolonged post-operative ileus(6.2%vs 12.2%vs 10.7%)and anastomotic leak(2.7%vs 1.8%vs 1.8%).Significant differences in recovery outcomes between groups were observed such as delayed urinary catheter removal(P=0.032)and autonomous deambulation(P=0.013)in elderly *** discharge criteria were achieved later in older patients(3 d vs 3 d vs 4 d,P=0.040),post-operative length of stay was similar in the 3 groups(5 d vs 6 d vs 6 d).CONCLUSION ErPs can be successfully and safely applied in elderly undergoing laparoscopic colorectal resection.

The aqueous phase in traditional microfluidics is usually confined by solid walls;flows through such systems are often predicted *** solid walls limit access,open systems are being developed in which the aqueous phase is partly bounded by fluid walls(interfaces with air or immiscible liquids).Such fluid walls morph during flow due to pressure gradients,so predicting flow fields remains *** recently developed a version of open microfluidics suitable for live-cell biology in which the aqueous phase is confined by an interface with an immiscible and bioinert fluorocarbon(FC40).Here,we find that common medium additives(fetal bovine serum,serum replacement)induce elastic no-slip boundaries at this interface and develop a semi-analytical model to predict flow *** experimentally validate the model’s accuracy for single conduits and fractal vascular trees and demonstrate how flow fields and shear stresses can be controlled to suit individual applications in cell biology.

Endoscopic or percutaneous biliary drainage in hilar cholangiocarcinoma:When and how?

Hilar cholangiocarcinoma (hCCA) is a primary liver tumor associated with a dimprognosis. The role of preoperative and palliative biliary drainage has long beendebated. The most common techniques are endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ErCP) and percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTbD);however, recently developed endoscopic ultrasound-assisted methods are gainingmore atention. Selecting the best available method in any specific scenario iscrucial, yet sometimes challenging. Thus, this review aimed to discuss theavailable techniques, indications, perks, pitfalls, and timing-related issues in themanagement of hCCA. In a preoperative setting, PTbD appears to have someadvantages: low risk of postprocedural complications (namely cholangitis) andbetter priming for surgery. For palliative purposes, we propose ErCP/PTbDdepending on the experience of the operators, but also on other factors: the levelof bilirubin (if very high, rather PTbD), length of the stenosis and the presence ofcholangitis (PTbD), ErCP failure, or altered biliary anatomy.

Objective:To evaluate differences in yield and composition of the essential oil and antioxidant contents in *** plants from localities in central region of ***:Samples were collected in Tamaulipas,Mexico in the arid *** oil was obtained through steam distillation and analyzed using *** contents,antioxidant activities using AbTS and ferric reducing antioxidant power(FrAP) methods also were ***:A total of 21 compunds were identified in the essential oils;nevertheless,only Eucalyptol,1,4-Methanocycloocta[d]pyridazine,1,4,4a,5,6,9,10,10a-octahydro-11,11-dimethyl-,(1à,4à,4aà,10aà) y Ethanone,1-(1,3-dimethyl-3-cyclohexen-1-yl) were detected in the three *** contents were registered in the sample from Padrón y Juárez with phenolic content of 33.85 mg GAE/g of dry material and antioxidant activities with AbTS 72.32% and with FrAP 21.33 mg GAE/g of dry *** differences were observed in essential oil,phenolics and antioxidants contents between ***:results suggest that climatic differences and origin influence the phytochemicals in the medicinal plant ***,and thus,it is worth to consider such effects for industrial and medicinal purposes.

In this systems paper,we present MillenniumDb:a novel graph database engine that is modular,persistent,and open *** is based on a graph data model,which we call domain graphs,that provides a simple abstraction upon which a variety of popular graph models can be supported,thus providing a flexible data management engine for diverse types of knowledge *** engine itself is founded on a combination of tried and tested techniques from relational data management,state-of-the-art algorithms for worst-case-optimal joins,as well as graph-specific algorithms for evaluating path *** this paper,we present the main design principles underlying MillenniumDb,describing the abstract graph model and query semantics supported,the concrete data model and query syntax implemented,as well as the storage,indexing,query planning and query evaluation techniques *** evaluate MillenniumDb over real-world data and queries from the Wikidata knowledge graph,where we find that it outperforms other popular persistent graph database engines(including both enterprise and open source alternatives)that support similarqueryfeatures.
