Fish diversity reduction and assemblage structure homogenization in lakes:A case study on unselective fishing in China

Unselective fishing involves activities that target the entire assemblage rather than specific fish species,size classes,or trophic *** common fishing approach has been in practice for decades in inland waters in China but its implications for biodiversity remain *** addressed this issue by studying fish assemblages in freshwater lakes(five fishing lakes,one reference lake,and a total of 51 sampling sites)between pre-and postfishing time-periods in Eastern China during 2017–*** effects of lake,fishing period,and their interactions on fish abundance,biomass,and diversity indices were *** analysis was conducted to test for differences in fish assemblages among lakes and between fishing *** the implementation of fishing activities,significant reductions in fish species richness,abundance,biomass,and all three life-history strategies(opportunistic,equilibrium,and periodic)were observed in fishing lakes,whereas opposite trends were observed in the reference *** similarity of fish assemblages among fishing lakes increased over the threeyear monitoring *** results suggest that unselective fishing reduces fish diversity and homogenizes fish assemblage structure in *** findings have important implications for protecting both biodiversity and fisheries in inland waters in China and are applicable to other countries or regions that rely on fish as a major food source.

Accurate determination of dNA yield from individual mosquitoes for population genomic applications

Accurate estimates of dNA quantity are likely to become increasingly important for successful genomic screening of insect populations via recently developed, highly multiplexed genotyping assays and high-throughput sequencing methods. Here we show that genomic dNA extractions from single Anopheles gambiae Giles using a standard commercial kit-based methodology yield extracts with concentrations below the linear range of spectrophotometric absorbance at 260 nm. Concentrations determined by spectropho- tometry were not reproducible, and are therefore neither accurate nor reliable. However, dNA quantification using a fluorescent nucleic acid stain （PicoGreen） gave highly reproducible concentration estimates, and indicated that, on average, single mosquitoes yielded approximately 300 ng of dNA. Such a total yield is currently insufficient for many highthroughput genome screening applications, necessitating whole genome amplification of all or most individuals in a population prior to genotyping.

Two basic motivations for an upgraded JLab facility are the needs： to determine the essential nature of light-quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking （dCSB）; and to understand nucleon structure and spectroscopy in terms of QCd＇s elementary degrees of freedom. during the next ten years a programme of experiment and theory will be conducted that can address these questions. We present a dyson- Schwinger equation perspective on this effort with numerous illustrations, amongst them： an interpretation of string^breaking; a symmetry-preserving truncation for mesons; the nucleon＇s strangeness σ-term; and the neutron＇s charge distribution.

Regarding the distribution of Glue in the Pion

Understanding why the scale of emergent hadron mass is obvious in the proton but hidden in the pion may rest on mapping the distribution functions(dFs)of all partons within the pion and comparing them with those in the proton;and since glue provides binding in quantum chromodynamics,the glue dF could play a special *** reliable predictions for the proton’s dFs is difficult because the proton is a three-valence-body bound-state *** sketched herein,the situation for the pion,a two-valence-body problem,is much better,with continuum and lattice predictions for the valence-quark and glue dFs in *** beginning of theory alignment is timely because experimental facilities now either in operation or planning promise to realize the longstanding goal of providing pion targets,thereby enabling precision experimental tests of rigorous theory predictions concerning Nature’s most fundamental Nambu-Goldstone bosons.

Massively deployable, Low-Cost Airborne Sensor Motes for Atmospheric Characterization

A low-cost airborne sensor mote has been designed for deployment en masse to characterize atmospheric conditions. The designed environmental sensing mote, or eMote, was inspired by the natural shape of auto-rotating maple seeds to fall slowly and gather data along its descent. The eMotes measure and transmit temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, and wind speed estimates alongside GPS coordinates and timestamps. Up to 2080 eMotes can be deployed simultaneously with a 1 Hz sampling rate, but the system capacity increases by 2600 eMotes for every second added between samples. All measured and reported data falls within accuracy requirements for reporting with both the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This paper presents the design and validation of the eMote system alongside discussions on the implementation of a large-scale, low-cost sensor network. The eMote represents unprecedented in-situ atmospheric measurement capabilities with the ability to deploy more than 260 times the number of sensing units as the most comparable commercially available dropsonde.

Thanks to the fast development of micro-electro-mechanical systems(MEMS)technologies,MEMS accelerometers show great potentialities for machine condition *** overcome the problems of a poor signal to noise ratio(SNR),complicated modulation,and high costs of vibration measurement and computation using conventional integrated electronics piezoelectric accelerometers,a triaxialMEMS accelerometer-based on-rotor sensing(ORS)technology was developed in this *** wireless data transmission capability,the ORS unit can be mounted on a rotating rotor to obtain both rotational and transverse dynamics of the rotor with a high *** orthogonal outputs lead to a construction method of analytic signals in the time domain,which is versatile in fault detection and diagnosis of rotating *** case studies based on an induction motor were carried out,which demonstrated that incipient bearing defect and half-broken rotor bar can be effectively diagnosed by the proposed measurement and analysis ***,vibration signals from translational on-casing accelerometers are less capable of detecting such *** demonstrates the superiority of the ORS vibrations in fault detection of rotating machines.
