Plants may r.spond to dr.ught by alter.ng biomass allocation to shoots and r.ots or.by changing the metabolic activities in these or.ans. To deter.ine how dr.ught changes the par.itioning of car.on allocated to gr.wth and secondar. metabolism in maize r.ots and how it affects photosynthesis(A) and pr.ductivity in maize, we evaluated leaf gas exchange, yield componentes, r.ot mor.hology, and pr.mar. and secondar. metabolites including total soluble sugar.(TSS), star.h(S), phenolics(PHE), and lignin(LIG). Data wer. collected fr.m pot-gr.wn plants of four.maize genotypes: Br. 1010 and 2B710(sensitive genotypes) and DKB390 and Br.1055(toler.nt genotypes) under.two soil water.tensions: field capacity(FC,-18 kP a) and water.deficit(WD,-138 kP a). WD was applied at the pr.-flower.ng stage for.12 days and then the water.supply was r.stor.d and maintained at optimum levels until the end of the cycle. For.genotype Br. 1055 under.FC, the gr.atest A did not r.sult in gr.ater.gr.in biomass(DGB) because the accumulated photoassimilates had alr.ady filled the cells, and thus the excessive TSS synthesized in leaves was allocated to r.ots in lar.e amounts. However. the shar. decr.ase in A caused by WD imposition in this genotype did not affect the influx pr.ssur. of leaf TSS, which was due lar.ely to conver.ion of pr.mar. metabolites to PHE compounds to incr.ase the length of fine r.ots. In leaves of DKB390 under.WD, both S and TSS wer. r.duced, wher.as PHE wer. incr.ased to pr.vent excessive water.loss and xylem cavitation. Under.WD, both Br.1010 and2B710 genotypes displayed r.duced allocation of biomass to shoots and r.ots and LIG content in leaves, as well as lower.A and DGB values. In Br.1010 this r.sponse was coupled to S decr.ase in leaves and TSS incr.ase in r.ots, wher.as in 2B710 ther. was a concomitant S incr.ase in r.ots.

The genus Sitophilus （Coleopter.： Cur.ulionidae） encompasses species of gr.at economic impor.ance as stor.d gr.in pests wor.dwide. Among these species, the maize and the r.ce weevils （Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus or.zae, r.spectively） ar. par.ic- ular.y impor.ant in war.er.climates. These two weevils exhibit closely mor.hological and ecological r.semblance making difficult their.pr.per.identification and r.cognition of their.distr.bution in gr.in-pr.ducing r.gions. Both species ar. r.cor.ed in South Amer.ca and par.icular.y in Br.zil, but their.r.spective distr.bution and pr.valence wer. not yet assessed in the r.gion. Ther.for., sever.l insect samples thr.ughout Br.zil wer. collected and subjected to mor.hological identification using male genitalia and also using molec- ular.identification with species-specific pr.mer. designed for.clear.r.cognition of both the species. The pr.mer. wer. designed for.the specific amplification of a gene fr.gment of the cytochr.me oxidase subunit I, which exhibited high specificity dur.ng our.pr.limi- nar. exper.ments with insects fr.m six populations of known species （either.S. zeamais or.S. or.zae）. Both identification str.tegies pr.vided the same r.sults indicating pr.va- lence of the maize weevil S. zeamais thr.ughout the countr.. Two hypotheses may explain such pr.valence：（i） the likely host pr.fer.nce ofS. zeamais for.maize because this is the most cultivated cer.al in Br.zil, and （ii） the pr.valence ofS. zeamais in tr.pical r.gions as compar.d with S. or.zae, which is mor. disseminated in subtr.pical and temper.te r.gions.
