Comprehending and exploring large and complex data is becoming increasingly important for a diverse population of users in a wide range of application *** has proven to be well-suited in supporting this endeavor by tapping into the power of human visual ***,non-experts in the field of visual data analysis often have problems with correctly reading and interpreting information from visualization idioms that are new to *** support novices in learning how to use new digital technologies,the concept of onboarding has been successfully applied in other fields and first approaches also exist in the visualization ***,empirical evidence on the effectiveness of such approaches is ***,we conducted three studies with Amazon Mechanical Turk(MTurk)workers and students investigating visualization onboarding at different levels:(1)Firstly,we explored the effect of visualization onboarding,using an interactive step-by-step guide,on user performance for four increasingly complex visualization techniques with time-oriented data:a bar chart,a horizon graph,a change matrix,and a parallel coordinates *** performed a between-subject experiment with 596 participants in *** results showed that there are no significant differences between the answer correctness of the questions with and without ***,participants commented that for highly familiar visualization types no onboarding is ***,for the most unfamiliar visualization type—the parallel coordinates plot—performance improvement can be observed with onboarding.(2)Thus,we performed a second study with MTurk workers and the parallel coordinates plot to assess if there is a difference in user performances on different visualization onboarding types:step-by-step,scrollytelling tutorial,and video *** study revealed that the video tutorial was ranked as the most positive on average,based on a sentiment analysis,followed by the scrollyt

Effects of unilateral superimposed high-frequency jet ventilation on porcine hemodynamics and gas exchange during one-lung flooding

BACKGROUND Superimposed high-frequency jet ventilation(SHFJV)is suitable for respiratory motion reduction and essential for effective lung tumor *** filling of the target lung wing one-lung flooding(OLF)is necessary for therapeutic ultrasound ***,whether unilateral SHFJV allows adequate hemodynamics and gas exchange is *** To compared SHFJV with pressure-controlled ventilation(PCV)during OLF by assessing hemodynamics and gas exchange in different animal *** SHFJV or PCV was used alternatingly to ventilate the non-flooded lungs of the 12 anesthetized pigs during *** animal positions were changed from left lateral position to supine position(SP)to right lateral position(RLP)every 30 *** each position,ventilation was maintained for 15 min in both *** variables and arterial blood gas levels were repeatedly *** Unilateral SHFJV led to lower carbon dioxide removal than PCV without abnormally elevated carbon dioxide *** slightly decreased oxygenation in SP and RLP compared with PCV;the lowest values of PaO_(2) and PaO_(2)/FiO_(2) ratio were found in SP[13.0;interquartile range(IQR):12.6-5.6 and 32.5(IQR:31.5-38.9)kPa].Conversely,during SHFJV,the shunt fraction was higher in all animal positions(highest in the RLP:0.30).CONCLUSION In porcine model,unilateral SHFJV may provide adequate ventilation in different animal positions during *** oxygenation and CO_(2) removal rates compared to PCV did not lead to hypoxia or *** can be safely used for lung tumor ablation to minimize ventilation-induced lung motion.

Most birds engage in extrapair copulations despite great differences across and within species. Besides cost and benefit considerations of the two sex environmental factors have been found to alter mating strategies within or between populations and/or over time. For socially monogamous species, the main advantage that females might gain from mating with multiple males is probably increasing their offspring's genetic fitness. Since male (genetic) quality is mostly not directly measurable for female birds, (extrapair) mate choice is based on male secondary traits. In passerines male song is such a sexual ornament indicating male phenotypic and/or genetic quality and song repertoires seem to affect female mate choice in a number of species. Yet their role in extrapair mating behavior is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the proportion of extrapair paternity (EPP) in a population of common nightingales . We found that EPP rate was rather high (21.5% of all offspring tested) for a species without sexual dimorphism and high levels of paternal care. Furthermore, the occurrence of EPP was strongly related to the spatial distribution of male territories with males settling in densely occupied areas having higher proportions of extrapair young within their own brood. Also, song repertoire size affected EPP: here larger repertoires of social mates were negatively related to the probability of being cuckolded. When directly comparing repertoires sizes of social and extrapair mates, extrapair mates tended to have larger repertoires. We finally discuss our results as a hint for a flexible mating strategy in nightingales where several factors-including ecological as well as male song features-need to be considered when studying reproductive behavior in monogamous species with complex song.

Ephrin A2 receptor targeting does not increase adenoviral pancreatic cancer transduction in vivo

Ex-vivo evaluation of gene therapy vectors in human pancreatic (cancer) tissue slices

AIM:To culture human pancreatic tissue obtained from small resection specimens as a pre-clinical model for examining virus-host interactions. METHODS:Human pancreatic tissue samples (malignant and normal)were obtained from surgical specimens and processed immediately to tissue slices. Tissue slices were cultured ex vivo for 1-6 d in an incubator using 95%*** were subsequently analyzed for viability and *** addition the slices were incubated with different viral vectors expressing the reporter genes GFP or DsRed. CONCLUSION:The presented system allows reproducible processing of minimal amounts of pancreatic tissue into slices uniform in size,suitable for pre-clinical evaluation of gene therapy vectors.

The development of positive psychology lead to a dual-factor approach in combining subjective well-being(SWB)and psychopathology for a more comprehensive understanding of mental *** capital(PsyCap)and teaching behaviors(TB)are focus of latest research as to their impact on adolescents'mental health *** our cross-sectional study we investigated 760 Chinese middle school students from grades 7 and 8 on self-report scales as to their spread on four mental health groups in a dual-factor model(complete mental health,vulnerable,symptomatic but content,and troubled).The four groups differed significantly in PsyCap,as well as in instructional(IB),socio-emotional(SEB),and organizational behavior(OB).As predictors PsyCap,followed by the two subscales of positive teaching IB and OB respectively,showed the strongest prediction on the outcome variables SWB and *** significantly moderated the relationship of negative teaching and psychopathology,in particular externalizing *** another main finding,PsyCap proved to be a partial mediator between positive teaching and psychopathology,and totally mediated the relationship of positive teaching and *** mediating effect was found for negative *** implications relate to education and intervention approaches for facilitating adolescents'mental health,screening programs,and resource management.

Invasive black spiny-tailed iguanas(Ctenosaura similis)on Gasparilla Island,Florida,USA

The native range of Ctenosaura similis extends from southern Mexico through Panama. From an initial introduction of 3 animals in 1979, the species now numbers in the thousands on Gasparilla Island in southwest Florida. In response to complaints of property damage from residents and threats to native species, local officials and the US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services began a removal program in 2008. Through 2011, trappers removed 9467 ctenosaurs. The number removed declined from 32 iguanas/day in 2008 to 1.9 iguanas/day in 2011 despite no easing of the control effort. We necropsied 2757 ctenosaurs to document aspects of their natural history. Females outnumbered males overall, although the largest size class (>300 mm snout-vent length) included 32 males and just 2 females. Reproduction was seasonal. We found oviducal eggs in females from early Apr to early Jun, approximately 2 months later than C. similis in its native range. We trapped hatchlings from late Jul to early Oct coincident with the summer rainy season. Clutch size increased with female body size, with 62 being the largest clutch size recorded. In general, the biology of the invasive population on Gasparilla Island resembles native C. similis populations in Central America, except for the lack of large individuals. We suggest that shorter day length and colder temperatures create environmental conditions that are suboptimal for individual growth compared to those in the native range.

An Investigation into Cold-Therapy of the Equine Metacarpus, Following Temperature Changes with Exercise as Well as Post Intervention

There is some discussion as to whether exercise-induced hyperthermia of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) affects tenocyte viability and pre-disposes to injury. Cold-therapy is commonly used as a preventative measure and treatment for acute tendon injuries, but only a few studies have evaluated the effect of cold-therapy on metacarpal temperatures in the horse. For this reason, this study has measured skin surface temperatures after moderate exercise and after application of cold-therapy, and additionally monitored the duration of any effects. Four horses were recruited into a semi blinded controlled study with repeated measurements that involved lunged exercise for 16 minutes at moderate intensity. Skin surface temperature was measured using a thermographic camera before and after lunging, and every 40 minutes for two hours post cold-therapy. Cold-therapy was applied using a Jacks Whirlpool Boot with ice-water immersion at a level just distal to the carpus for 20 minutes. The right leg was treated, and the left leg was used as an untreated control. The experiment was conducted twice on all four horses. Moderate exercise resulted in an increase in skin surface temperature of 10°C. Application of cold-therapy for 20 minutes resulted in a reduction in skin surface temperature by 14°C. The effect of cold-therapy persisted for at least 40 minutes post treatment. It is concluded that exercise leads to an increase in skin surface temperature which is counteracted by the application of cold-therapy. These findings would seem to indicate that cold-therapy can be used after exercise to counteract hyperthermia within the metacarpal region of the horse’s leg.

On the red fluorescence emission of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

A number of studies have indicated that bacteria able to emit red fluorescence can be detected by light in-duced fluorescence technique and killed by photodynamic therapy. The objective of this study was to investigate the red fluorescence properties of the single gram negative capnophilic bacterium Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, ATCC 33384, and to investigate if these properties were related to the growth, morphology and size of the bacterial colonies. Time trend assessment was made with red fluorescence by QLF (Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence), as well as with white light digital imaging. It was demonstrated that A. actinomycetemcomitans, a single capnophilic bacterium, is able to produce red fluorescence on its own, i.e. in the absence of other bacteria strains, and that blood agar is necessary to obtain red fluorescence from this bacterium on culture plates. This bacterium formed smooth circular, bell/dome like colonies increasing in size with time exhibiting various red fluorescence behaviors. A large variation in the fluorescence behavior points out an inhomogeneous distribution of red fluorescence within and between the colonies, i.e. the size of the investigated colonies did not correlate with the red fluorescence area, suggesting a dependence on the colony morphology such as the colony growth in height. To our knowledge this is the first study that have shown that A. actinomycetemcomitans on its own is able to produce fluorescence in the red spectral region.
