Adverse hepatic reactions associated with calcium carbimide a.d disulfiram therapy: is there still a role for these drugs?

disulfiram a.d calcium carbimide are two alcohol deterrants widely used in alcoholism treatment, however, there exist great concerns over their safety. Reports on hepatotoxicity, mainly related to disulfiram therapy, have been published. The hepatotoxic potential of calcium carbimide is less well characterized. Here, we describe four cases of liver damage related to this therapeutic group that were submitted to a Registry of hepatotoxicity a.d point out the limitations that we face when prescribing these compounds. A reassessment of the role of these compounds in the management of alcohol dependence is clearly needed.

laurel forests are quite relevant for biodiversity conservation a.d are among the isla.d ecosystems most severely damaged by human *** the past,Canary laurel forests have been greatly altered by logging,livestock a.d *** remains of laurel forests are currently protected in the Canary isla.ds(Spain).However,we miss basic information needed for their restoration a.d adaptive management,such as tree longevity,growth potential a.d responsiveness to natural a.d anthropogenic *** dendrochronological methods,we studied how forest dynamic is related to la.d-use change a.d windstorms in two well-preserved laurel forests on Tenerife *** cores were collected from over 80 trees per sta.d at three sta.ds per *** used ring-width series to estimate tree ages a.d calculate annual basal area increments(BAi),cumulative diameter increases,a.d changes indicative of released a.d suppressed *** tree species were found in all sta.ds,with laurus novocanariensis,ilex canariensis a.d Morella faya being the most common *** some individuals were over 100 years old,61.8%-88.9% of the trees per sta.d established between 1940 a.d 1970,coinciding with a post-war period of la.d aba.donment,rural exodus a.d the onset of a tourism *** trees have shown growth rates larger than 1 cm diameter per year a.d most species have had increasing BAi trends over the past *** growth releases occurred after windstorms at both sites,but the effects of windstorms were site-dependent,with the 1958 storm affecting mainly the eastern tip of the isla.d(Anaga massif)a.d the 1991 storm the western tip(Teno massif).Given the great ability of laurel forest trees to establish after la.d use cessation a.d to increase growth after local disturbances such as windstorms,passive restoration may be sufficient to regenerate this habitat in currently degraded areas.
