Effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines against rotavirus infection and hospitalization in Latin America: systematic review and metaanalysis

Background:Rotavirus was the leading cause of childhood diarrhoea-related hospitalisations and death before the introduction of rotavirus ***:We describe the effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines to prevent rotavirus infections and hospitalizations and the main rotavirus strains circulating before and after vaccine introduction through a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published between 1990 and 2014.203 studies were included to estimate the proportion of infections due to rotavirus and 10 to assess the impact of the vaccines.41 of 46 studies in the post-vaccination period were used for meta-analysis of genotypes,20 to calculate VE against infection,eight for VE against hospitalisation and seven for VE against severe ***:24.3%(95%CI 22.1–26.5)and 16.1%(95%CI 13.2–19.3)of cases of diarrhoea were due to rotavirus before and after vaccine introduction,*** most prevalent G types after vaccine introduction were G2(51.6%,95%CI 38–65),G9(14.5%,95%CI 7–23)and G1(14.2%,95%CI 7–23);while the most prevalent P types were P[4](54.1%,95%CI 41–67)and P[8](33%,95%CI 22–46).G2P[4]was the most frequent genotype combination after vaccine *** was 53%(95%CI 46–60)against infection,73%(95%CI,66–78)against hospitalisation and 74%(95%CI,68.0–78.0)against severe *** in hospitalisations and mortality due to diarrhoea were observed in countries that adopted universal rotavirus ***:Rotavirus vaccines are effective in preventing rotavirus-diarrhoea in children in Latin *** vaccines were associated with changes in genotype distribution.

The municipality of Boa Nova,in northeastern Brazil,is in an ecotone zone between the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest phytogeographic *** transition phytophysiognomy is seasonal forest and known locally as mata de cipó.In these phytophysiognomies there are lajedos,which are rock outcrops colonized by vegetation welladapted to extreme microclimatic variation and vegetation diversity is affected by the vegetation types of the surrounding *** to the singularity of these environments and the relevance of floristic studies for conservation,this work aimed to identify the species richness and compare the similarity of the flora on four rock outcrops in Boa *** flora was surveyed during exploratory walks along lajedos between 2016 and *** total,162 species were identified on the Boa Nova *** flora has a composition and structure similar to semiarid outcrops,as well as endemic species that also occur in surrounding *** the proximity,a similarity index revealed there is floristic dissimilarity between the *** new occurrences were recorded for the region,five species are threatened with extinction(Aosa gilgiana,Ficus cyclophylla,Hippeastrum stigmovittatum,Pleroma caatingae and Trixis pruskii),and 43 species are common in anthropogenic *** reinforces the importance of actions to conserve these areas.

Catalytic combustion of soot over ceria-zinc mixed oxides catalysts supported onto cordierite

Modified substrates as outer heterogeneous catalysts was employed to reduce the soot generated from incomplete combustion of diesel or diesel/biodiesel blends, a process that harms the environment and public health. The unique storage properties of ceria （CeO2） makes it one of the most efficient catalysts available to date. Here, we proposed that ceria-based catalysts can lower the temperature at which soot combustion occurs; more specifically, from 610℃ to values included in the diesel exhausts operation range （300-450℃）. The sol-gel method was used to synthesize mixed oxide-based catalysts （CeO2：ZnO）; the resulting catalysts were deposited onto cordierite substrates. In addition, the morphological and structural properties of the material were evaluated by XRD, BET, TPR-H2, and sEM. Thermogravimetric （TG/DTA） analysis revealed that the presence of the catalyst decreased the soot combustion temperature by 200℃ on average, indicating that the oxygen species arise at low temperatures in this situation, promoting highly reactive oxidation reactions. Comparative analysis of soot emission by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy （DRs） showed that catalyst-impregnated cordierite samples efficiently oxidized soot in a diesel/biodiesel stationary motor： soot emission decreased by more than 70%.

Infrared spectroscopy of Titania sol-Gel Coatings on 316L stainless steel

sol-gel titania films were deposited on 316L stainless steel using titanium isopropoxide as a chemical precursor. Dip-coating was performed at withdrawal speeds of 6 mm/min, 30 mm/min, and 60 mm/min. Deposited gel films were heat treated in air at 80℃, 100℃, 300℃, and 400℃. The structural evolution of the coatings was evaluated by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy. The influence of the withdrawal speed and the heat treatment temperature on the structure of the films was studied by varying the reflectance incidence angle during the infrared experiments and by Glow Discharge spectrometry. Free functional groups were detected. The results indicate the formation of bidendate bridging coordination of carboxylic acid to titanium. Titanium atoms can also be pentacoordinated according to the processing conditions of the films. We observed a tendency of increasing amounts of OH groups with decreasing reflectance incidence angle. The film hardness was measured via Knoop microindenation hardness test.

Chemical characterisation of particulate matter in urban transport modes

Traffic is a main source of air pollutants in urban areas and consequently daily peak exposures tend to occur during *** exposure to particulate matter(PM)was monitored while cycling and travelling by bus,car and metro along an assigned route in Lisbon(Portugal),focusing on PM_(2.5) and PM_(1)0(PM with aerodynamic diameterspectively)mass concentrations and their chemical *** vehicles,the indoor-outdoor interplay was also *** PM_(2.5) mean concentrations were 28±5,31±9,34±9 and 38±21μg/m 3 for bus,bicycle,car and metro modes,*** carbon concentrations when travelling by car were 1.4 to 2.0 times higher than in the other transport modes due to the closer proximity to exhaust *** are marked differences in PM chemical composition depending on transport *** particular,Fe was the most abundant component of metro PM,derived from abrasion of rail-wheel-brake *** concentrations of Zn and Cu in cars and buses were related with brake and tyre wear particles,which can penetrate into the *** the motorised transport modes,Fe,Zn,Cu,Ni and K were correlated,evidencing their common traffic-related *** average,the highest inhaled dose of PM_(2.5) was observed while cycling(55μg),and the lowest in car travels(17μg).Cyclists inhaled higher doses of PM_(2.5) due to both higher inhalation rates and longer journey times,with a clear enrichment in mineral *** presented results evidence the importance of considering the transport mode in exposure assessment studies.

Prevalence,phenotype and medication for the pediatric inflammatory bowel disease population of a state in southeastern Brazil

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)can lead to social and economic impacts *** Brazil,where its adult prevalence is increasing,the epidemiology of the pediatric population is not well known,although there is a documented increase in pediatric IBD incidence *** has continental dimensions,and Espírito santo is a state of southeastern Brazil,the region with the highest demographic densities and is the economically most important in the *** To assess the prevalence,incidence,phenotype and medications in a southeastern Brazilian pediatric *** Data were retrieved from the Public Medication-Dispensing system of the Department of Health in Espírito santo state from documentation required to have access to highly expensive medication from August 1,2012 to July 31,*** were 1048 registered patients with IBD of all ages,and of these patients,the cases≤17 years were *** data were obtained through the analysis of administrative requests for these medications and included medical reports,endoscopy exams,histopathology and imaging tests,which followed the Clinical Protocols and Therapeutic Guidelines of the Brazilian *** confirmed cases of IBD were included in the *** There were 55 pediatric patients/1048 registered patients(5.34%),with Crohn's disease(CD)representing 30/55(55%),ulcerative colitis(UC)24/55(43.6%)and 1 unclassified IBD,a significant difference from adult patients(P=0.004).The prevalence of IBD in pediatric patients was 5.02 cases/100.000 inhabitants;the incidence in 2014 was 1.36 cases/100.000 *** mean age at diagnosis was 12.2 years(±4.2).There were 7 children diagnosed up to 6 years old,7 between 7 to 10 years old and 41 between 11 and≤17 years *** was no difference in the distribution of UC and CD between these age categories(P=0.743).There was no difference in gender distribution in relation to *** and adolescents with UC had a predominance of

Transpiration and growth responses by Eucalyptus species to progressive soil drying

The regulation of plant transpiration is a key factor affecting transpiration efficiency, growth and adaptation of Eucalyptus species to limited water availability in tropical and subtropical environments. However, few studies have related this trait to the performance of Eucalyptus seedlings and none have investigated the influence of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on transpiration rates and growth. In this study, the transpiration and growth responses of seedlings of Eucalyptus urophylla (s.T. Blake) and Eucalyptus cloeziana (F. Muell.) to progressive soil water deficits were evaluated under semi-controlled conditions using the fraction of transpirable soil water (FTsW) method. In addition, the influence of VPD on seedling transpiration, development and growth was also investigated. The FTsW threshold ranged from 0.40 to 0.99 for the transpiration rate and from 0.32 to 0.97 for the development and growth variables. Little or no changes in the FTsW threshold were detected in response to changes in atmospheric VPD. Both Eucalyptus species presented a conservation strategy under drought stress. In addition, water-conserving mechanisms during the seedling phase were related to rapid stomatal closure, reduced leaf area, and number of leaves.
